people have talked about the relative non-presence of children in black sails but the ways in which they are present are also quite interesting... they represent the future for sure that's what children always represent but also from the "nothing left but the monsters in the stories they tell their children" thing to the little kids that gawk at flint when he's about to be executed to abigail to the kids reading the general history of the pyrates at the end they are very frequently in the position of passing down judgment. which is ever so slightly different from just like, the future will judge us, because it's not about what the children will do when they grow up to be adults. children are judges *in their capacity as children.* it's a war over the imagination of children. which of course makes perfect sense it's the prequel to a children's book.

that's sooo interesting because there's something to be said then about the difference re children shown in nassau, given that they are shown either a. working or b. dead. who is the audience. who is valuable. who is disposable. whose imaginations are allowed to flourish, to be captured, and whose are suppressed. even as children.

underrated ship dynamic is a touch-starved housewife who's exclusively into gay men and a lonely gay boy who has not a friend in the world

it's pretty interesting to me actually that people seem to sometimes interpret woodes rogers as the real villain of black sails bc i can't really think of anything rogers does that the protagonists don't also do. the writers go to great pains to show that he is kind of Exactly the same as flint except his circumstances (straight, upper-class) allow him to stay on the side of empire. down to changing the name of his dead brother so you can't possibly miss it. he says it, out loud! he even has the same speech that flint does about acknowledging and accepting that to his audience he is in the role of villain. what makes this role real in one instance and fake in another? why, in black sails, would villainy ever be real and not a matter of perspective? the only difference between rogers and flint is that rogers is on the wrong side, and the writers are very careful to show that that is a matter of circumstance and not of character.

it's interesting that out of all the main characters (other than silver) the only one who doesn't have a backstory is miranda. she doesn't get a father or mother or even a maiden name nothing about her childhood or her education... iirc the chronologically earliest miranda story we get is her talking about her feelings upon meeting her future husband. that's kinda crazy. by her own account her life started when she met her husband. i'm using silver logic to assume that that must mean her childhood was Pretty Bad

what's so awesome about miranda hamilton is that she knows full well that revenge brings nothing good and that it will probably make her and her loved ones and many innocent uninvolved people more miserable and that it would not be what the person she lost wanted and she has no illusions about any of it. but when push comes to shove even if the end she's been fighting for for two seasons is in sight she simply cannot let the bastard get away with it
