Sharks having rough, sandpaper-like skin is a pretty widely-known piece of trivia; I learned that as a kid. But it's not so widely-known that people who know it can assume everyone else knows. From a moderate distance, they certainly look smooth.

So you have a substantial number of people who are confident in their shark knowledge, but not confident in other people's shark knowledge. And also, they haven't been smooth-sharked yet. Every day, more nerdy kids join Tumblr than get exposed to the "smooth shark" meme.

And the first time they see someone say sharks are smooth, they chime in to correct what looks like an ordinary misunderstanding. But plenty of their digital neighbors know about smooth-sharking, and descend on the well-meaning nerd, like a wounded seal being attacked by some kind of smooth-skinned fish.

The feeding frenzy often attracts other nerds unfamiliar with smooth-sharking, and the sheer number of people who get tricked by smooth-sharking turns into a spectacle for those in on the joke. Thus the smooth-shark arguments get spread far and wide, encouraging other tumblrinas to follow in their footsteps.
