stratt did not want to have grace dragged away kicking and screaming, not to make it easier for the mission or for herself, but because she cared for and trusted him. she knew that the grace was the only person with a complex understanding of astrophage. she knew, as a history major, how quickly humanity will turn ugly once food shortages began.

the emotion she showed in that scene, as subtle as it was, was genuine. she had no choice but to choose between the fate of her friend and the fate of humanity.

she entrusted the fate of humanity to him, because she knew he possessed the knowledge to pull off project hail mary. she knew that, as scared as he was, he would give everything to save humanity once he woke up in space and realised what he needed to do.

and the whole film is grace slowly remembering exactly who he is as he gives his all to saving earth and erid because he knows it’s the right thing to do.

he gives such a respectful send off to the astronauts before he even remembers who they were, because he is morally good. he becomes emotional during this because he has such a natural sense of humanity.

even when he finally remembers that he was a coward, that he didn’t willingly take on the mission, he doesn’t give up. he chooses saving rocky over his chances of returning to earth because he cares so, so deeply for his new friend, and he knew that erid would not survive without the taumoeba.

he does all of this because not only has he found someone to be brave for, but he finally remembered exactly who he is, who he always was deep down: a brave man.
