Rhetorical dogwhistles are things that most people would not be able to identify as bigoted because they're INTENDED to have plausible deniability.

The wording changes are meant to be subtle enough that people really can mix them up accidentally when they don't have much information!

So when the gender critical movement calls trans women "transwomen", they're hoping for 2 things.

this usage will spread enough among people who don't know any better, to give transphobes the plausible deniability of not LOOKING like a frothing bigot constantly.

the usage grammatically places trans women in a different category than other women; it's changing "trans" from an adjective to part of a noun to make this distinction.

The more we can avoid this usage, the less deniability have transmisogynists have when using it, and the less rhetorical ground we cede to the degendering and misgendering of trans women.

yes, everyone is CAPABLE of growth and change. everyone has the RIGHT to growth and change. but no, not everyone will CHOOSE growth and change. some people are not interested in and cannot be made interested in self-improvement or self-reflection. some people will go their entire lives refusing to admit they might be wrong or examine their own behaviors. some people will never, ever accept responsibility for the effects they have on people and the world around them. humans are varied; some are just always gonna be like this.

it is VITAL to understand this if you’re the kind of person who tends to pour energy into helping others, especially if there are already people knowingly hurting you who consistently show absolutely no interest in changing that behavior. you can’t forcibly make them want to change who they are. you aren’t going to find a way to convince them to suddenly care that their behavior is hurting someone.

the motivation to change and grow comes from within. others may inspire us, but WE have to decide we want to be better and work towards that. until they decide that for themselves, nobody else can do it for them. and they might never. people are mortal. we are a finite series of choices. it is entirely possible to make mostly selfish ones.

I'm really not the sorta person to make callout posts. Considering the stuff that's gone on with this guy, though, I feel obligated to spread awareness in whatever way I can. Bimble / bimbleygimbly / bimblescribbles has been credibly accused of sexual harassment & sexual assault, and has more or less admitted guilt. He's caused some other issues in Discord servers - such as condoning the sharing of nsfw content around minors, harassing minors, and repeating the same behaviors even after being confronted. Recently, Bimble has been joining Mother servers on Discord, and contacting folks in the fandom - despite agreeing to stay away. If this were all just pretty private drama, I don't think it'd be my place to speak up. But given what I know about him, and how many folks are following me, I think a warning here is warranted. For what my opinion is worth: I don't believe it's safe for this person to participate in the Mother fandom - especially considering how many minors & survivors there are in this community. I think we should do all we can to keep our spaces safe from people like this.
