i actually think that what's being missed in the 'why does everyone love heated rivalry' conversation is just that it's good
it's well made, well shot, well directed, the music is interesting, the costumes are both thoughtful and subtly period accurate, the sex scenes are intentional and, again, accurate to what hooking up when you're like 18 actually feels like...the actors are of course attractive but they look like real people. the characters are varied and well fleshed out, the acting is really, really strong
so many shows and films shoot and then slot in whatever music kind of fits or could be licenced in the budget after time, but you can tell that the scenes in hr were shot with that specific music in mind. and the same intentional approach runs through the whole thing
it feels...so nice to watch a show that cares about itself
Nobody knew in advance that this show would become a massive international phenomenon. It was a mid-budget Canadian show (which means low budget by US standards) adapted from a Harlequin romance novel. The deal with HBO for US distribution rights was only signed a few weeks before it began to air.
But everybody involved treated it as if it was serious art anyway. Not just some little Canadian streaming show that might well disappear after airing. Based on a book from a genre that is usually ridiculed by people who consider themselves serious film people. The cast, the crew, the writer/director, the music supervisor, everybody. They all did their best work for love of the game.
borrowing grief from the future but yk how jacob said what we see in heated rivalry is basically what shane and ilya remember from all those years. the language of memory. isn’t it crazy to think that when connor and hudson look back on filming heated rivalry it’ll be sort of similar. like. the world knew our names overnight, it seemed. we had a million eyes on us, everything was go go go. a blur of names, faces, places we’ve only ever dreamed of being, in rooms we only ever hoped to enter. but mostly, i remember the beginning, before it all went wild. running lines with you in those cramped apartments. work, home, gym, eat, gym, sleep, repeat. i remember us going from ilya at 19 to shane at 25 in the span of a day. swimming through seasons — years were condensed into hours, minutes. you never had to sell me on anything; i always believed you. cigarette smoke lingering in the back of the throat. his mother’s name etched into a taped up hockey stick. gold cross like a talisman, a good luck charm, a second skin. your hands being his hands, your mouth his mouth, your body his body — is this okay, does this work for you, do you want me to move — when i do this, he should respond like this. fucking around nonstop just to pass the time. my head on your shoulder in a cottage in muskoka, wading into the inevitable, watching the sun rise. the end of the world whittled down to your eyes, your furrowed brow in firelight. no words in mind that aren’t thank you, a thousand times over. i miss you already, even though you’re sitting in front of me. 37 days spent in each other’s pockets — here, take my hat, use my sunscreen, can i bum a cig, can i borrow your flannel? 37 days and 9 years. and you were there with me at the finish, the two of us shoulder to shoulder, looking out at the world that was looking right back at us, saying goddamn i think we made something worth it. i think we made something that matters. maybe we’re on the precipice of something special. maybe this is just the start.
you get me — love you forever.
Hudson Williams, #1 Shane Understander
I think Shane was a character who, soon as I read him, made all the sense to me. I felt immediately a kinship and an ownership over Shane. I was like, “I need to be the only person to tell this story. I get it. I want to be the person to be Shane and I want to spend time with him.” [x]

Endlessly diabolical how you can't say words like rape and suicide uncensored without either being criticised by idiots or punished by conglomerates.
It's not r*pe, it's rape. It's not su*cide, it's suicide. Not unalive, dead. The backbone needs to be reintroduced en masse because softening the blow of these concepts with advertising language does absolutely nothing but allow people unaffected by them to feel not even a sting of what they can do, prompting inaction.
And it's been proven that on certain websites, you don't even face a repercussion for using the words as they are. People just started censoring themselves because they feared the potential lack of views and likes and followers which is so nasty itself.
I attended an anti-suicide seminar in college. One of the big takeaways from it was that stigmatizing suicide increases the rate of suicide, because people who are feeling suicidal feel like they can't ask for help. Every time I see babytalk garbage like 'unalive', I think of that.
Use the real words. Words have power, and they matter.

Shane is such a Protector and Provider. He’s the one who carries the suitcase. He’s the one with the sensible car for safety and comfort. He’s the one with the big house where they can go. He knows how & builds the campfire. He’s the one who buys the food and cooks the meals - even if he could’ve cut the recipe in half. Yes, he’s the world’s biggest bottom and he lovesss to get fucked, but he doesn’t fall into the stereotypes of bottom = feminine at all.
When you think about it, Shane being the Provider is a big part of his whole life. He’s the team Captain and provides the wins & $$$. His mother is his manager, and he’s her only client. His salary & brand deals are the income for both of them. His dad works for the govt. He’s the one footing the bill for that Chablis at the nice restaurant. He’s the one whose name gets them in and pays for things like a Wimbledon trip. He doesn’t resent it, but he does feel the weight of it. But not with Ilya.
Protecting and providing for Ilya is easy for Shane. It comes naturally. This is important for Ilya, who has been the Provider for his own family — which is exploited and abused repeatedly over many years. He feels like he’s always giving so much (bolshe bolshe bolshe) and not only is it thankless, it’s completely unreciprocated by anyone except Svetlana. No one provides anything for Ilya, emotional or material, and CERTAINLY no one protects him.
It makes you wonder about how vulnerable Ilya was when he was younger & unprotected. When his mother died and he was persuaded to lie by the person who was hardest on her, who was also the hardest on him. When he was acting out, engaging in risky sex and looking for trouble. When that didn’t get him the attention or care that he sought. When his own brother hated him, and he knew why. When he was never good enough, always “lazy,” not winning when he was supposed to even though he won a LOT.
Ilya was still the Provider, even then. He still looked out for his father who he could tell was ailing. He still gave his brother money. He still set aside a trust for his niece. No one was providing anything for him in return. So is it any wonder when Mr Hey Heyyy Will You Come to my Cottage offers him ANY solace, even a SHRED of comfort, Ilya is putty in his hands? “Are you hungry? The drive is 2 hrs” “How are your ribs?” Of course, Shane is actually offering a LOT of comfort & security.
“Here,” Shane offers easily. “Here is a place where you can be safe. Where you can be vulnerable. Where you can be fully held for the first time since you were 12. You can be honest about what you’re thinking & feeling. You can be warm by this fire. I’ll protect you from that noise that scared you. You don’t need to be scared. I’ll rub your shoulder & pet your hair & hold your hand while you tell me about the worst thing that ever happened to you.
I’ll sit over you and watch out. You don’t need to spend money. You don’t need to look for trouble to get my attention. You have it. I want this with you. I’ll make a plan for the future so you can be safe & secure. I’ll kiss you even when you’re cold from the lake. What food do you want for lunch?” It leaves room for Ilya to protect and provide back on his own terms, to fulfill what his sweetheart needs - but that’s the subject of a different emotional post.

WHY IS THIS SO GOOD?!
They put drugs in this show, and this edit is the closest I've come to being able to snort it like cocaine. Excluding binging the entire show in 6 hours after first turning on episode one to see what all the fuss was about.
Hi I've been raised from the dead by a new ice gay show how is everyone else doing
