most recent windows 11 update is wiping SSDs
there's been multiple reports of people's computers not booting properly after the windows 11 24H2 KB5063878 update due to it essentially wiping the hard drives (specifically SSDs) on computers and laptops. users have reported their SSDs aren't able to be read/recognized and unable to be seen in bios settings either.
sources: - https://www.windowslatest.com/2025/08/20/microsoft-is-investigating-windows-11-kb5063878-ssd-data-corruption-failure-issue/ - https://www.nichepcgamer.com/archives/windows11-24h2-issue-with-writing-to-the-ssd-is-this-caused-by-kb5063878-kb5062660.html
it's safe to assume all SSDs can be potentially affected by this update, so if you haven't updated yet turn off autoupdates
the bug caused by this update is seemingly triggered by installing/moving/deleting large files (50+ gb), which as simmers is what a lot of us do very pften
if you're unsure what windows version you currently have:
go to settings > system > about (at they very bottom) > and scroll down to see the current OS version
if you do currently have windows 11 24H2:
in settings, click 'Windows update' > 'Update history' > and under 'Quality Updates' check to see if the KB5063878 update is in the list of recently installed updates
don't panic, you can uninstall this update!
while in 'Update History', scroll to the very bottom and click 'Uninstall updates', and click 'Uninstall' for 'Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB5063878)'
from there, give it some time to remove the update and after pause updates for as long as possible (5 weeks is the longest i think), but it will force an update if there's a big/official update for the fix
if you've already been affected and your computer is not starting or giving errors regarding your hard drive, i recommend visiting small pc repair shops to try data recovery as some have reported placing their SSD in an enclosure seems to work to recover the data
hopefully this is helpful is any kind of way! friendly reminder to back up your data to an external drive routinely!
THIS AFFECTS WINDOWS 10 TOO For W10 the faulty patch is KB5063709. You can access and uninstall it from Control panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features -> Installed Updates The out-of-band update KB5066188 is supposed to fix issues with the "Reset this PC" recovery failures, the SSD drivers failing hasn't been fixed yet afaik. Best uninstall the faulty patch.
🇺🇸nationwide recall of dozens of dermarite soaps, creams, hand sanitizers, antiseptics, antifungals, analgesics, and other healthcare-oriented products due to potentially life-threatening microbial contamination🇺🇸
if this recall sounds familiar: this is a massive expansion of a previously announced recall by dermarite. the previous dermarite recall only involved four products. the new expansion issued on august 27, 2025 (FDA publish date 8/28) now involves dozens of products. I (rune! hello) did not make a post about the previous recall. the new list is LONG.
the expanded recall now involves dozens of different products intended to be used in medical-related settings by patients or by people caring for patients. including wound care. which is really fucking bad because they are all potentially contaminated with burkholderia cepacia complex, which can absolutely kill someone. these contaminated products were used in healthcare settings like hospitals and senior care facilities.
at least some of dermarite's products are/were also available for sale directly to individual customers from websites like walmart, target, and amazon.
all lots of all affected products within the listed expiration dates are now being recalled. see the giant bullet list below.
DermaRite Industries, LLC is expanding the voluntary recall initiated on July 16, due to potential microbial contamination identified as Bur
DermaRite Industries, LLC is expanding the voluntary recall initiated on July 16, due to potential microbial contamination identified as Burkholderia cepacia complex. Out of an abundance of caution the voluntary recall has expanded to include additional products and lots, which can be found in the table below. Please see DermaRite.com for the original recall notice. Risk Statement: Burkholderia cepacia complex in these products may result in serious and lifethreatening infections if the products are used by immunosuppressed individuals or by people attending to immunosuppressed individuals. For healthy individuals with minor skin lesions, the use of the product may result in local infections, whereas in immunocompromised individuals the infection could spread into the blood stream, potentially leading to life-threatening sepsis.
emphasis mine. sepsis is BAD.
dermarite products are contaminated with burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC). these are products often intended to be used on open wounds or by people treating open wounds. getting BCC in open wounds can mean nasty infections, including infections that can kill someone.
this is the link to the previous dermarite recall, which only involved 4 products, and was much more complicated in regards to which lots of those products were being recalled. the new recall is a lot easier: everything listed with an expiration date on or before 08/2027 is being recalled.
dermarite makes products intended for medical use, whether that is in a healthcare facility or not. in addition to being sold directly to healthcare facilities like hospitals and senior care facilities, (at least some of) the recalled products were also sold on websites like target, walmart, and amazon to whoever wanted to buy them.
notably missing from this recall expansion is "To date, DermaRite has not received any reports of adverse events related to this recall." <- not mentioned. there is a possibility that adverse events, including infections or death, have been linked to this microbial contamination since the previous recall was announced. if this is not the case then maybe dermarite should update their recall announcement. if this is the case then they should own up to those adverse effects and list them in the recall announcement. come on, do better!
The products included in this expanded voluntary recall include: 4-N-1 is a no rinse wash cream intended to temporarily protect and help relieve chafed or cracked skin DermaCerin is a skin protectant moisturizing cream indicated to temporarily protect and help relieve dry, chapped, or cracked skin. It also helps protect skin from the drying effects of wind and cold weather. DermaFungal is an OTC antifungal cream intended for the treatment and prevention of most athlete’s foot, jock itch, and ringworm. It relieves itching, scaling, cracking, and discomfort associated with these conditions. DermaKleen is an OTC healthcare antiseptic lotion soap with Vitamin E indicated for handwashing to decrease bacteria on the skin. DermaMed is an OTC skin protectant intended to dry the oozing and weeping of poison ivy, oak, or sumac, or other skin irritations. DermaSarra is an OTC external analgesic indicated for temporary relief of itching associated with minor skin irritations due to dry skin, insect bites, detergents, or sunburn. Gel Rite is an OTC instant gel hand sanitizer with vitamin E used to decrease bacteria on the skin. It is recommended for repeated use. Hand E Foam is an OTC foaming hand sanitizer with vitamin E used for handwashing to decrease bacteria on the skin. It is recommended for repeated use. KleenFoam is an OTC antimicrobial foam soap with Aloe Vera indicated for handwashing to decrease bacteria on the skin after changing diapers, after assisting ill people, or before contact with a person under medical care or treatment. Lantiseptic is an OTC skin protectant indicated to temporarily protect minor cuts, scrapes and burns. It helps prevent and temporarily protect chapped or cracked skin. PeriGiene is an OTC antiseptic cleanser indicated for use in the perineal area. PeriGuard is an OTC skin protectant indicated to help relieve and prevent rashes and irritation due to wetness from incontinence. It also protects chafed skin due to irritation and helps seal out wetness. Renew Dimethicone is an OTC skin protectant indicated to help treat and prevent diaper rash, protect minor skin irritations associated with diaper rash, and helps seal out wetness. Renew Periprotect is an OTC skin protectant indicated to help treat and prevent diaper rash, protect minor skin irritation associated with diaper rash, and helps seal out wetness. Renew Skin Repair is an OTC Skin cream indicated to temporarily protect and help relieve chapped or cracked skin. It is beneficial for face, hands, body and legs. UltraSure is an OTC anti-perspirant & deodorant indicated to reduce underarm wetness.
the above is a helpful description of some of the products being recalled, but it is NOT a complete list of recalled products. not sure why they only listed a description for some of the recalled products here. I (rune) list all the recalled products a little further below.
The recalled products were distributed nationwide in the United States and in Puerto Rico. DermaRite has notified its distributors and customers by e-mail to immediately examine available inventory and destroy all affected products in accordance with each facility’s process. ... Consumers should contact their physician or healthcare provider if they have experienced any problems that may be related to taking or using this product or have questions about whether the product was used in their health care facility.
this is one of those cases where these products are often used on or by people who may never learn the name of said products. reach out to your healthcare provider to find out if they use any of these if you are so inclined. at least some of these products were available for purchase to some extent by non-healthcare facilities, so they are also in some people's homes.
the recall announcement says that all affected products should be destroyed.
alright time for the fuckhuge list. I could either do it indented like a quote or bullet list so I picked bullet list to make this a little neater and a little less painful for everyone. (hey tumblr: can we do bullet lists in indented text? that would be so cool. or tables. can I have tables one day? could really go for some good tables.)

stay safe and take care!
me?? checking knitting books out both to support my library and to avoid paying per pattern??? it's More Likely Than You'd Think
update:
VOLUME ACQUIRED!! specifically for the YOU SHAWL NOT PASS pattern (pictured bottom left of the cover!!), but i'm VERY stoked to flip through the rest of this, too
ANOTHER UPDATE:
YARN ACQUIRED!!! as soon as i saw Mothy and the Squid's absolutely GORGEOUS "Inner Fire" yarn, i knew that was 100% what i needed for the Balrog-themed "You Shawl Not Pass," and after a Slight Snafu about Shades of Black, my Much More Appropriately Saturated OPAL arrived today!! i am LOCKED and LOADED and PREPARED FOR SHAWLDOM!!
(i will absolutely not be starting this right away, i've got a blanket in the works and need to do some Little Projects For The Dopamine Of It All, but it is HERE and i COULD and THAT'S WHAT MATTERS!!)
SO IT HAS BEGUN:
so the cast on for this one STARTS at 162 stitches, and then we come out swinging with some UNHINGED EARLY EDGE INCREASES, but so far so good!! we'll see how long it actually takes to Make This Thing Happen (it's a christmas present so....)
made it past "cast on and setup"!! honestly loving the big long stretch of garter in the middle, because it turns it into a Social Project (read: i can chatter instead of having to count all the way across lol). so far, so good! onward to chevrons!
okay so i shoved this to the bottom of the stack to work up a [REDACTED] real quick and then most of my mom's cowl, AND now it's nano, HOWEVER!: i picked this up again this afternoon, got to a stitch notation in the pattern, had exactly this mood:
, googled the vexing stitch, found a youtube link in my search history, and all of a sudden DID recall so. that's how this is going lmao
update!: have made it to the end of the section labeled "CHEVRONS" and now i am onto the section labeled "CONTINUE CHEVRONS" (in which she hits you with a "Read carefully through this section before beginning as multiple steps occur at the same time," which has been making me low-key nervous since the first time i read through the pattern, because it looked Convoluted and Tricky).
fortunately! her instructions for the multiple simultaneous steps are just written unhingedly! it's basically "keep working in the established pattern BUT make it bigger every 8 rows to account for the increases in said 8th row" lmao. i wrote myself out a handy cheat sheet so i have something to check off (because i've been putting check marks upon row completion but. ah. seventy-eight (78) more rows is. too many check marks, for the current printed pattern to withstand).
making good progress on the first ball of black yarn! theoretically i'll use a second one, too, and then switch to the FLAMES. i'm so glad i'm not speedrunning this all in december lmao
made it to the end of the first ball of yarn!! she is. Growing Up.
i could switch to a bigger cable to see her better but i don't wanna
anyway! just finished the fifth "CONTINUE CHEVRONS" repeat (what timing!!), so there's only four and a half left before the contrast color switch. very interested to see how much of the second ball of black yarn i need for this--i'm already going through a lot per row, but there's also only four and a half repeats of the pattern with the contrast color, and that allegedly will use one ball or less also. so! hoping to have some extra black at the end, but We Shall See.
now, onward, to Poorly Joining In The Second Ball!
behold, the fun part: COLOR!!!
finally made it to mothy and the squid's INNER FIRE yarn, and hot damn is it delightful fun!! it's way more interesting to work than the solid black, and it's gonna look cool? hot as hell when it's done!! less than four pattern repeats to go!
WAY PAST MY BEDTIME TOO HYPED TO SLEEP BAD LIGHTING PICTURES LET'S GOOOO~~
HERE'S THE SCRUNGLYASS HERSELF, FRESH OFF THE NEEDLES, AND HER POT OF STEW (TRAGICALLY POTATOLESS):
it took me 88 minutes and 10 seconds (plus or minus maybe 2 min)(i had a stopwatch going but also Family Interruptions and my stopwatch game isn't hair-trigger accurate) to bind off all 646 stitches, but i DID IT and now she is BLOCKING and i am MOST PLEASED!! i'll post pinned pictures once i have daylight and then drape pictures once she's dry, but WOW what a DAY!!
*this point on your dash without witnessing THE COMPLETED SHAWL, is what he means by "you shawl shall not pass," here
hello again world!! guess what has been BLOCKED and PHOTOGRAPHED and WRAPPED!! BEHOLD!!
she's 65 inches at her widest and 17 inches from neckline to central point! she is VERY wrappable and wingspanny and cozy!! i'm so pleased with how she turned out! she took two skeins (a skein and a half really) of OPAL and most of the INNER FIRE, and the pattern can be found on ravelry here.
thanks for joining me on this treacherous quest--i'm glad most of our fellowship made it past the balrog. now, if you'll excuse me, i'm going to go collapse in a heap and pine after second breakfast.

It's kind of incredible just how much the Country House Murder Mystery genre is, at its roots, a reaction to WWI and the social change that sprang from it.
go on
So I've been healing up from surgery, meaning I've been catching up on my TBR pile, and my three great loves are a) middle grade anything, b) SF/F with good worldbuilding and characterization, c) murder mysteries without too much grit or grime.
In the pursuit of c), I've been playing Ace Attorney, but I've also been reading whatever Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers I can grab off Project Gutenberg. Since it's exclusively the ones in the public domain, it's their oldest stuff- pre 1924.
And the thing about all of these 20s murder mysteries is that they're incredibly haunted by The Great War, in the same way that most mysteries from the 2000s are haunted by the War on Terror or many mysteries coming out now are Haunted by COVID.
Lord Peter Wimsey has screaming dissociative PTSD flashbacks from the trenches. In Murder on the Links, Poirot is a displaced person- Belgium isn't a safe place to be an aging police inspector at the moment- the narrator has been discharged with an injury, and one of the main suspects is working as an army nurse.
And like... you can pull a couple threads through here. But if we're talking about the stereotypical Country House Murder Mystery- the two big ones are a) the end of the Old Order, and b) you always find the body and know the cause of death.
A) is pretty obvious- the death of a patriarch (or matriarch) is a microcosm of the slow decline of the British nobility. It's a way to give the sense of "Everything Your Worldview Depended On Has Fallen Apart" a face. Every dirty secret we don't speak of has come to light, all at once; every lie that supported The Way Things Are is revealed for what it really is. (Dulce et decorum est, anyone?) The local lord is dead, and no one is going to replace him. The world has irrevocably changed.
B) is something that @bespokeminutiae pointed out to me when I mentioned this- in a country house murder mystery, you always know where the body is, and you always know what happened to it. In a world where a lot of people lost loved ones in some far off place, without getting to see the body or say goodbye? That's a hugely comforting fantasy.
(Incidentally, this is why Knives Out is the best Country House Murder Mystery of the past 25 years- it understands that some themes are inherent to the genre and says something new that still engages with those themes.)
Ooooo, this conversation continues very interestingly with the Japanese literary equivalent -- honkaku-ha (本格派), the "orthodox school" of "classical whodunnits," which by definition followed the rules of detective fiction codified in the west by the Golden Age writers and gained prominence just before, during and after World War 2.
I say during and after because that's when Edogawa Ranpo was active, by far the most famous and prominent Japanese mystery writer of the era. Ranpo started in the 1920s and wrote well into the 50s. He's best known in the west for his recurring detective character, Kogoro Akechi, who's basically the Japanese Sherlock Holmes -- complete with being mostly an urban character who lives and works in and around Tokyo.
Though I'm personally more familiar with Yokomizo Seishi and his Kousuke Kindaichi mysteries, which started in the aftermath of the war and hew very close to the Country House Murder Mysteries, with the twist that said country houses tend to be former samurai estates on tiny isolated islands or in rural mountain villages. Kindaichi himself is also a detective much more in the vein of Dame Agatha, being a young war vet with some odd ticks that make people underestimate him (he has a stutter and always looks frumpy because he scratches his head really hard when he's thinking) but nonetheless solving his cases with keen observation and patient deduction.
And in the same way, you can feel the haunting presence of the war and the dissolution of old social orders. In place of declining British nobility, you have the crumbling remnants of samurai families. There's a nine-year timeskip between Kindaichi's first and second novels, during which he gets drafted and winds up in a POW camp; he stumbles into like the next three cases just trying to bring his dead war buddies' last messages back to their families. And there's this looming specter of westernization, what it means for the old traditions, which should be preserved and if it might not be better to let some of them die.
One thing honkaku-ha introduced to the mix that sets them apart from the western tradition is a tone and aesthetic taken from Japanese horror. Where western mysteries can be familiar and almost comforting enough to earn the label 'cozy,' honkaku-ha are often stark and cold, with murders defined by their violence or grotesque stagings and the stories themselves seeped in elements of supernatural or erotic overtones (Edogawa in particular had a fascinating friendship with an anthropologist known for his research on the history of homosexuality in Japan). The two best-known Kindaichi novels, The Inugami Curse and Village of the Eight Graves, toe the line between classical whodunnits and gothic horror.
It's a very interesting contrast, given that this (honkaku-ha) is very much a genre that's always been in part about opening a line of conversation with the western tradition, to see how the threads of influence get carried over.

The most important part of all this is that these small acts of bravery and noncompliance cannot be known as long as the enemy still stands, and might never be known. Just because it doesn’t seem like anyone is doing anything doesn’t mean it’s true. The best malicious compliance or subtle sabotage is the one that’s never detected, but makes ravages nonetheless.
