No, I totally agree that computer RPGs these days have too much handholding. I, too, yearn for the days of being able to spend hours meticulously crafting my perfect build from hundreds of available options, only to discover that it mathematically cannot survive the mandatory rat fight portion of the unskippable first dungeon.

True freedom is the skill where not maxing it out at chargen will lock you out of the main quest twenty hours later and the skill that has exactly one (1) non-trivial check in the entire game both costing one point per rank.

This is the one case where "you can just say" clowning doesn't bother me, because this sort of thing absolutely used to be the norm, and the fact that everybody now parses it as a reference to Fallout and only Fallout because nobody remembers any of the other games that routinely pulled this shit genuinely represents progress.

Well, yeah – that's exactly the problem. Some folks in the notes are acting like this post is broadly condemning difficult games, but it's not about difficulty. What it's actually about is games which purport to offer a high degree of freedom to play whatever you want, but have extremely specific baked-in assumptions about the player character's mechanical capabilities, and simply refuse to tell you what those assumptions are. That's no way to guarantee difficulty – indeed, such games are often piss-easy if the character you want to play just coincidentally happens to align with the game's secret expectations.

it was pretty funny how quickly spike stopped being happy about angel losing his soul in season 2. he was like "oh this is awesome, angelus is back!" and then within an hour was like "hey wait a minute, i hate angelus. this sucks."
