i think more writers should celebrate the birthdays of their creations, honestly, because this was so much fun. "mystery of lack" wasn't my first doctor who fic, but it's my longest so far - plus my most read and interacted with - and it spawned so much love for this fandom and the lovely people in it. i look back on writing and posting it with so much joy :)

seriously though, thank you so much for the kind words and the AWESOME ask. i love thinking about tentoo, rose, and mia, my lovely little trio. i fear my headcanons might be a bit basic, but i definitely have lots!

Mia would be the only kid that Rose and the Doctor have. They love her to death and they would be excellent parents, but after she grows up a bit, it would be a mutual, "yeah, she's all we need." From a narrative standpoint, I think Mia represents their ability to finally live on the slow path; to stop running long enough to make a life that is simple in comparison to the one they lived before. I'm not saying they'd go full-blown picket fence (god no) but that the Doctor and Rose finally get a quiet requiem to the years of hardship they endured apart, and Mia is a representation of that epilogue. No need for more than her.

The Doctor tries his best to raise Mia bilingual, speaking to her in Gallifreyan whenever he can, but given that Rose only knows a few words and phrases, Mia doesn't quite reach fluency. Her toddler babble does end up with the occasional Gallifreyan word mixed in, and when she starts going to primary and learning official English grammar, she gets confused and upset that they're only teaching three tenses. The Doctor and Rose have to explain that alternate future, potential past, and other time travel specific tenses are not standard in most languages.

Given that her father is part Time Lord (technically), Mia has slightly better senses than the average person. Only slightly. She actually gets miffed about them when she gets older because they make her more sensitive to light and sound. There's a whole 'I hate that my family isn't normal' phase when she's 14-15, hence the way she acts in the comics lol.

When it comes to the whole 'your dad is part alien' thing, Rose and the Doctor don't treat it like some big secret. Their TARDIS probably reaches maturity rather early in Mia's life, so explaining time travel and the extraterrestrial once she was old enough to properly understand it weren't the difficult bit. Getting her to understand the importance of keeping it secret was. Thankfully, no one really believed her, but she got frequent comments from teachers on her active imagination.

Mia really likes the snow. Rose and the Doctor take her out in it often, properly bundled, but the Doctor gets an odd melancholy in snowfall sometimes. It's the same way around New Year's for a reason he can't place.
