(Part 1)

Had to split the Doctor's per incanation 'cause there's just so much material lmao. This is a selection of scenes, cause, again: So.Much.Material.

The second thing you probably note about Timepetals are their eyes; or rather the way they look at each other. This part of my visual guide is going to be structured a bit differently. In five categories, we'll take a look at the Doctor and Rose's looks (hah). You can use it as a visual library if you feel so inclined.

ADMIRATION

The way their glances convey admiration is going to be the death of me, on god.

Season 1, ep. 2: The End of the World.

This is right after an argument. The very next episode, Rose is waxing poetic about travelling and seeing things "a thousand sunsets ago" (while gazing at him like below), and this is the Doctor's reaction:

The Doctor's reaction seeing Rose in her fancy gown:

When he realises she's a fighter all the way, and they‘re in this together, no matter what. And when he tells her how glad he is to have met her (She is as well):

Rose and the Doctor slow dancing, and forgetting the universe around them. So much so that they don't even notice when they're being teleported:

At this point the Doctor knows Rose so well that he can with 100% certainty say that she'd never turn her back and leave if there’s a crisis:

Season 1, ep. 13: The Parting of the Ways.

This Doctor who's rough around the edges, hard and brash (but deeply wounded and hurting on the inside) is showing so much vulnerability with his admiring gazes, it's honestly heartwarming to watch.

JOY & CONTENTMENT

It's clear the Doctor has great joy watching Rose simply exist. Here are some examples, starting with episode 3 The Unquiet Dead:

Season 1, ep. 3: The Unquiet Dead.

The absolute delight with which he's watching Rose tear Sneed a new one is honestly just hilarious. The way he is admiring her spunk needs to be studied.

The Doctor's face when Rose is showing off to Adam, and trying to be adorably impressive:

Season 1, ep. 7: The Long Game.

Again, he's content to step back and watch her do her thing. Bro's gone deep. He always finds things he can celebrate with her. Such as Rose finally pronouncing Raxacoricofallapatorious correctly:

Season 1, ep. 11: Boom Town.

Do you see the utter delight here? It's absolutely beautiful to see this much joy in the Doctor's eyes, and it hits especially different when he's so relieved Rose is alive and well:

Season 1, ep. 12: Bad Wolf.

You can literally see here the realisation set in, which then transforms to joyous relief. Here two other examples:

Season 1, ep. 6: Dalek.

Season 1, ep. 13: The Parting of the Ways.

Notice how Rose is looking at him, as well. (My adorable dorks, god I just love them so much!) The way Rose is able to bring him joy by simply being herself and lighten the mood, especially when they talk about difficult and depressing topics. This bit is right after the Doctor opens up about being the last survivor of a genocide and asks if Rose wants to stay, since the travelling can be dangerous:

COMPASSION & UNDERSTANDING

Here, I chose two scenes I really like. Whenever they talk about painful memories, it‘s met with compassion and understanding. In the aforementioned scene above, Rose's responses to the Doctor are these:

The last still (bottom right) is where she says, "There's me." You can really see she's feeling his pain (to the best of her ability) and wants to comfort him. She now understands why it’s so difficult for him to talk about his past. Then there's the Doctor in episode 8, Father's Day:

This is right after Rose watches her father Pete die the first time. You can clearly see how he feels her pain and loss, so much so, that he caves at her request to go back a second time because he wants to make it better (even though he knows better).

SADNESS (DEVASTATION) & WORRY

It's very striking when the Doctor is sad, or I should rather say devastated whenever he thinks Rose is lost to him. Like here in episode six when he thinks the Dalek killed Rose:

His immediate worry when they get electrocuted by the Editor in episode 7:

Season 1, ep. 7: The Long Game.

Or on the Game Station when Rose is seemingly pulverised:

Season 1, ep. 12: Bad Wolf.

The disbelief and numb grief in his eyes is killing me, tbh. Finally, when Rose comes back as Bad Wolf and the Doctor is just in utter shock, awe and terror, not only of what she has done and become, but also for her, since he knows the power is killing her:

YEARNING & JEALOUSY

Nobody yearns like the Doctor and Rose. Additionally, it’s overlooked a lot of times – mostly in the context of Rose-critical discourse, and especially when talking about her jealousy – how jealous the Doctor is about Rose. Most of their jealous moments are tinged with a ton of yearning:

Season 1, ep. 5: World War Three.

Like here, where the Doctor tells Rose "I could save the world but lose you." with such an intense look in his eyes that even Rose realises that something is happening. The way she's so stunned for a moment before the weight of what he just said hits her is also something I want to note.

Then there is the Doctor's priceless, and very telling, looks in episode 10:

The top left one is when Jack plays "his and Rose's song" over the speakers – you know the slow romantic number which is suggesting a lot of romantic things with Rose the Doctor is not part of. Nothing to be jealous of, of course.

Rose's quip about "always the great looking ones" leaving, earns her the look in the stills at the top right.

Then, of course, his caught out face when Rose straight up calls him out on his jealousy.

This all culminates how the Doctor looks at Jack after he snatched Rose away from the Captain to dance with Rose himself, in the TARDIS Console room:

This is somebody staking their claim, alright. The way he's pointedly looking at Jack while dipping Rose and pulling her close to him is very telling.

Rose, on the other hand, has only two distinctly jealous moments in the whole season, one of which is what I call her yearning-jealousy in episode 13:

After watching Lynda and the Doctor exchange their goodbyes, Rose has this kinda resigned look into the distance before she shakes it off. Though she's not the only one with this kind of look. I present you how the Doctor watches Rose and Mickey through the TARDIS monitor in episode 11:

Season 1, ep. 11: Boom Town.

I originally wanted to put this into the worry category, but I think it's more of him resginedly yearning for her, when he sees her go off with Mickey. Jack even asks what he's looking at, and he's quick to dismiss it.

We've reached the end of this chapter (and almost the limit of pictures I can post in one tumblr post) of the Timpetals Visual Guide. It's really amazing how much these two communicate so many emotions with each other (and others) via their looks.

Plus, how the obsessive fixation on a person turns into pseudo-feelings for them since it’s easier to "love" said person instead of acknowledging the painful fact your life was ruined because of them because you’ve been literally brainwashed to kill them…but alas, Moffat marketed it as "romance" and "a love story" (it isn’t).

Thankfully, I‘m good at ignoring Moffat‘s bs writing, so, this is exactly how I’m gonna view River‘s character arc because it’s ten times more interesting and less stupidly misogynistic that way.

Note: This is my current opinion, but I do want to explore River's chracter in detail, in the future, and Moffat's writing of her in particular. Because other characters of his didn't bother me as much, to be honest, so I'm kinda curious if a deep dive will change my mind, at least in parts. Or if it will completely validate my opinion. (Don't think it'll ever be a 180 for me, but maybe a bit more nuance, idk)

Because it made me think of how the Doctor feels about Rose (Translation below, doing my best to translate this as accurately as possible):

(Mum,) Ayşe is so beautiful.

Beautiful like the rain.

Sometimes, she can be very scary, coming at you, blazing.

But most of the time, she’s so soft*; she brings you peace.

(Do you get it, mum,) anything bad and ugly – she takes it all away.

Like, do you know when rain falls onto earth it makes flowers bloom?

And I’m saying – how can a person manage something like this?

How can they go into somebody‘s aimless** heart and turn it into a forest?

Now, these are literally just the Doctor‘s (especially Nine omg) thoughts when he thinks of Rose, like???

Notes:

* So, "yumuşacık" means something like very or extremely soft if you translate it literally. For example a fabric can be "yumuşacık", meaning it’s like the softest material you‘ve felt. Obviously, here it means soft-hearted and tender. So a very soft-hearted person.👀

** "öylece duran" means something like "just existing" in this context. I took the liberty to translate it with "aimless" since it makes more sense in the context of their romance. But yeah, also reminded me so much of timepetals, wow. Never noticed it before tbh.

Y‘all I’m not joking when I say I’m making use of my uni libraries, so I can accumulate a solid historical understanding and base (am I taking this too seriously? Idk, you tell me, but it’s good practice for like applying academic research and essay writing practices, so a win for me lol)
