“Magic will never have a place in Camelot” was the single line that forever condemned Merlin and every magic user to a lifetime of suffering, and the judge jury and executioner was the boy who was supposed to be their saviour, who forgot how to want to be free.

And that line “there is no place for magic in Camelot” is the perfect example of his jumbled effort to see the prophecy fulfilled.

He fucks up. Alot. Don't get me wrong but all those fuck ups were made for the greater good. I have gone in length as to how "magic has no place in Camelot" was done in a (clumsy,but still) effort to make that prophecy happen. If Mordred dies, Arthur is still alive to bring ABOUT SAID GOLDEN AGE. And I think you nailed the part about how IF Merlin had just given up on the prophecy, people would have just as mad about THAT and say he wasn't doing enough and betrayed his community by doing so. Since as a reminder, 𝘩𝘦'𝘴 𝘧𝘢𝘳 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘦𝘤𝘺. The druids,the Catha,the high priestess nimueh,all of them believed that Arthur was the once and future king as well.
