A bagpiper plays while the sun sets in the idyllic lakeside town of Southampton, Ontario. This Lake Huron locale is the best place I've ever been for a completely unobstructed view of daylight fading. You can see that families love coming to see the spectacle.
Revise Revise vs. Get It Out There, in todayās feature match
In an online world of daily and often by-the-minute production and publication, I am the novelist-at-heart that wants to produce only his best work and not let it be seen until it is utterly revised.
āBut you have to get it out there: market it and spread the word,ā the blogger in me beseeches. There is much daily infighting between him and the novelist.
āYou canāt sell what the world doesnāt see repeatedly,ā echo the voices of countless sale people Iāve met at networking events.
The retort comes quickly.
Here is my ancient and beloved Sony Walkman, circa 1987 or so. I put in new batteries and much to my delight the magical music box still works. I popped in one of the dozens of compilation tapes that I made way back when and the tunes started flowing - songs that I don't have in their digital version and haven't heard in years: such under-appreciated greats as Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth With Money in My HandĀ by Primitive Radio Gods; Give Me Some Truth by John Lennon and White Line by Blackie & The Rodeo Kings. Truth be told here, as much as I hate to admit it, MP3s just don't sound as good. Please Neil Young, bring on higher quality digital sound.
Donāt Look There, Keep a Distance, Keep Quiet and Carry Stuff: The Rules for Taking a 13-Year-Old Daughter Shopping
If Iām ever allowed to go shopping with our freshly minted 13-year-old ā which is to say be seen in the mall with her highness, a scenario that is highly doubtful ā there are certain irrefutable rules that must be followed.

If you want a leg up before an obstacle race and choose to train, incorporate these exercises into your workouts! Then put them to the test and impress yourself at a Warrior Dash near you!
I'm not training for a mud run but I hope to complete one of these obstacle courses some day. The exercises are all pretty basic and essential to many workouts. I love push-ups, planks and bicycle crunches.
The Benefits of Playing Softball
As told by an aging player of moderate ability and maximum passion
Let me make this abundantly clear about softball, or baseball: if played correctly ā and that means hitting, catching, throwing and running with full effort and without thoughts of sipping beer until the game is over ā it is a wondrous, sophisticated and incredibly difficult game to play.Ā It is NOT slow, boring, easy, or in any way un-athletic.
āI see a lot of fat guys playing softball.āĀ Yeah, me too.Ā But did you watch them play? Ā First of all, a lot of them are faster and more athletic than you thought. Ā On the other hand, the bigger they are, the more difficulty they have rounding the bases speedily or chasing a fly ball thatās coming their way at 60 km an hour.Ā This doesnāt mean the game is not meant for them; some of them can pound the ball a country mile.Ā My point is that in order to exceed at all facets of the game, the ability to move quickly in all directions is tremendously important.
With that said and out of the way, here is my list of the benefits of playing softball, hopefully into your retirement years:
Camaraderie: Itās just fun getting together and playing in the dirt and grass. As with many adult leagues, getting together afterwards at the bar is half the enjoyment.
Physical activity, specifically rapid movement: Thereās a lot of quick-twitch muscle movement going on, from swinging the bat as hard as humanly possible to running quickly from base to base and stopping suddenly, or sliding. And donāt forget about reacting quickly to catch those line drives (which hopefully are not destined for your head).
Increased mental alertness: You learn quickly to anticipate what might happen: i.e. ball coming your way in the field. You have to be constantly mindful on every pitch. If you miss an easy play, your teammates may deliver a few playful jabs.
A sense of involvement: Itās cool be part of a team thatās striving for something, even if itās just to lose by less than ten runs a game.
Heightened concentration, loyalty, a sense of responsibility, judgement, quick thinking, discipline, teamwork: Your teammates will count on you, mainly just to show up and try your best. No one expects you to play like Jose Bautista. But they want to know that youāre going to attend most (not all) games and give a decent effort.Ā What you give, you will get back in droves.
Learned new skills: After the game and all season long, you can brag to anyone that cares. Youāll be able say how well you coached first or third base, hit the cut-off player on an outfield hit, or scored a run with a nice base hit to left field.
Competitiveness: Trying to win isnāt the whole purpose but itās an integral part of why we go out there game after game and risk pulling muscles in our aging bodies. When we lose, we say weāll do better next time. When we win, we try to keep winning. Either way, itās the attempt that defines us. By the way, if you play for enough years, sooner or later youāre going to be on a good team. It may take 15-18 years but it will happen.
Romanticism: the mystique of the game is an integral part of why we play. Baseball ā even in its āwatered downā softball or slow-pitch version ā has a distinct history and flavour and has long been celebrated as a fixture in North American culture. If youāre like me, the game gets under your skin and won't leave. On game day you pray that it doesnāt rain because you canāt wait to get out there and show your best version of Mickey, Willie or the Babe. If you donāt know who those guys were, youāre probably a hockey player.
Fun: I mentioned this under camaraderie but it canāt be said enough times. A lot laughs take place on the diamond. Hopefully they are all good-natured. Weāre not pros and we want to have a good time and go to sleep that night feeling positive about our experience. If this happens nine times out of ten, as is typical for me, itās a hell of a nice feeling.
Halasana to Salamba Sarvangasana
Plough Pose to Shoulderstand
Sharon Aluma
Start lying on the back, legs long, arms down by the sides. Bend the knees into the chest and lift the hips and low back off the floor. Straighten the legs overhead, reaching the toe tips to the floor behind the head. Keep lifting the thighs and tailbone towards the ceiling as the chest presses towards the chin. Clasp the hands and press the forearms down. To come into the inversion, start to lift the legs up, bringing them perpendicular to the floor. Keep reaching the toe tips towards the sky and the hips towards the heels. Stay for 6 steady breaths, releasing slowly through plough and returning to lying on the back.
Good for shoulder, neck and spine stretch. Stimulates the thyroid gland and abdominal organs. Helps fatigue and insomnia.
Standard Moves presented by PUMA.
This is really good for my thyroid and neck. I've been doing it for years and highly recommend it.
Canadaās "culture of convenience" means children and youth sit too much and move too little, in gym class, on the playground, and while travelling to and from school, according to a new global comparison.
Here's my simple vision: physically active parents teach their kids from a young age to enjoy the freedom and beauty of movement. That movement, in whatever form, takes place every day because then it feels easier and more natural. When it feels this way it's more likely to continue, and more beneficial to overall health and wellness.
It's sad for me to think that many of the offending parents are my age: born in the late 1960s or 1970s. It's as if they forgot what life was like back then. In order to have fun, we moved. And when we moved - ran, walked, cycled, swam, skated - it was the most fun we could possibly have. We moved until we dropped, and it felt great.
Hi there. I'm Erich's new foam roller. He got me as an early birthday present from his wonderful wife and daughter. I've been with the big guy for nearly two days now and he's used me three times already. I'm very proud of myself because in that time I've cracked over 10 bones in his back and I heard him says how good it felt when I did that. I understand that he used to get the occasional massage, but each one of those took too long and cost too much money. I'm happy to be a cheap and portable substitute for a certified massage therapist. I see that Erich has mostly mid-back issues and I provide great relief for that. He should also know I'm equally proficient at tending to his neck and legs. I'm quite sturdy; many of my colleagues from the factory have been tested voraciously by massive football players and all are still good to go. I like to be put to use and can't stand being left in a dusty closet for weeks at a time. Hopefully Erich realizes this and will allow me to do my job. That's all for now. I'll let you know in a few weeks how he's been treating me.

We have all heard that we need to drink more water.
The health benefits of drinking the proper amount of water for your body are so staggering that I could write a nearly endless endorsement for it.
Want to loss weight?Ā Drink more water.
Want higher mental acuity?Ā Drink more water.
Want to build muscle?Ā Drink more water.
Want clear, beautiful skin?Ā Drink more water.
Want to look younger?Ā Drink more water.
Tired all the time?Ā Drink more water.
Hungry all the time?Ā Drink more water.
And on, and on, and on it goes.Ā Seriously, google, bing, or whatever search engine you fancy and look it up.
I typically drink 12-16 glasses of water a day.Ā My goal is a gallon a day.Ā
While there are many different recommendations and charts available indicating how much water you should drink - it comes down to this:Ā If you are drinking enough water every day then your urine will run clear.. from your first morning pee to the one right before you go to bed.Ā The darker it is; the more dehydrated you are.
As a 230-pound highly active man, I need to drink a lot of water. I don't mind. I do, however, have an issue with drinking water that tastes the same all the time. So, I drink water in various forms: room temperature filtered water; Perrier, either room temperature or refrigerated; iced tea made from scratch and all-natural ingredients, decaffeinated, with dissolved rock sugar; filtered water flavoured with lemons, oranges mint leaves and cucumber, refrigerated; and fruit juices that are low in sugar.
Give Me Coconut Water and Let Me Sit: What I Do After A Workout
How do you cool down and rehydrate after a workout? Here are some ideas that have worked well for me:
I just sit for 15 minutes or so ā sometimes longer if possible, like in the evening ā and let my body regain its equilibrium. I used to be really energized after a workout, but thatās before I began high intensity training and running for an hour or more. Also, I was younger then.
Drink water: I drink at least a full glass after a run. Thatās the initial rehydration. The next hydration stage isā¦

Too cute
The young lady has better parliamentary presence than most Canadian elected officials. Kudos to mom for giving her little girl plenty of mental stimulation, and love.
Some folks love to buy TVs, power tools and home furnishings. I get excited about a spectacular new pair of running shoes. These may be my best pair yet; the colours alone are mesmerizing.
Easter Monday: Full-On Exercise Assault
Easter Monday didnāt start with a flourish. My wife and I woke up groggily after a nine-hour sleep. We love our long weekend slumber so we werenāt worried, but we sure didnāt have a day of high octane activity planned. We gladly devoured the requisite fruit smoothie created in the Vitamix blender. Then we headed outdoors.
The daily dog walk came first: a two-kilometre stroll around our middle-class neighbourhood with lots of stops for sniffs, pees and poops. Next up was a bike ride with my daughter and her friend, the morning after their sleepover. They wanted to ride to the waterfront and stop for gelato. Her buddy thought it would take an hour to get there but we managed it in 17 minutes.

This is a great article on the psychology of blogging. I thought some of you might be interested in reading it. I intend to put the good advice to use.
My wife bought this vivid painting at a hair salon over a year ago. Ā It was created by a local lady who's in her 80s. Ā It hangs on our kitchen wall and is one of the first things we see when we enter the house. Ā The more I look at it the more I love it.
