Somehow, in your awkward clumsiness, you end up giving your boss—and crush—and super-star celebrity chef—a neck massage. Somehow, you find out what it sounds like when Carmy whimpers.

“[Name],” Carmy hisses through his teeth, more urgently, his voice higher-pitched than you’d ever heard it before. “Jesus H. Christ, [Name]!” “You can do it,” you soothe softly. “It’ll feel so much better, I promise. Just take a deep breath. It’ll hurt less the more I do this.” He listens, his breaths audibly shallow and shaky. He groans with discomfort but stops trying to skitter away from your touch. “Fuckin’ hell,” he seethes under his breath. “Just let it go, Carmy,” you whisper encouragingly, feeling him tensing up and resisting you. It’s close to releasing a good twitch. His breath seems to hitch, and then you feel the knot spasm again. He whimpers when you rock your elbow into him, rubbing circles into the toughened scar tissues. You almost don’t believe what you heard, chalking it up to a weird squeak from the lowboys or something before he does it again, a stuttering gasp that sounds like he’s about to cry. He actually, full on, puppy-dog whimpers. “God, n—fuck,” he breathes, and you can’t tell if he’s cursing you or thanking you.
