The Future of UK Defence: Why Scalable Manufacturing Will Determine Autonomous Warfare

I recently attended a discussion in London, on the future of UK defence and autonomy. The themes were clear, and the implications are profound.
-Autonomous and uncrewed systems are rapidly becoming a cornerstone of modern military capability.
-Warfare is evolving from individual platforms to interconnected, multi-domain systems of systems.
-Software, AI, autonomy, and agile SMEs are becoming as strategically important as traditional defence primes.
-Autonomy is not replacing advanced military capability, it is multiplying its effectiveness.
Yet there is a critical point that often gets overlooked.
Success is not guaranteed simply because the technology exists.
To realise the promise of autonomy, we must fundamentally rethink how defence capability is developed, procured, funded, manufactured, and deployed. The current model, built around lengthy procurement cycles and limited production capacity, was designed for a different era.
The future requires something different.
We need to create and fund, new generation of defence companies capable of moving from prototype to production, from innovation to deployment, and from dozens of systems to thousands. This means empowering SMEs, funding critical industrial base, investing in manufacturing capacity, and providing clear and consistent demand signals through procurement.
Governments cannot simply ask industry to innovate. They must help create the conditions for scale, especially good buy signals.
One of the greatest advantages of autonomous systems is that they can deliver meaningful combat capability at a fraction of the cost of many legacy defence platforms. The future battlefield will increasingly be shaped by large numbers of intelligent, connected, and affordable systems operating collaboratively across air, land, sea, and underwater domains.
Mass matters.
Resilience matters.
Production matters.
History teaches us that industrial capacity is often the deciding factor in conflict. The nations that can rapidly manufacture, integrate, and sustain capability at scale will hold a decisive advantage.
For the UK to lead in the age of autonomy, we must industrialise innovation, accelerate procurement, invest in production infrastructure, and support the companies that will build the next generation of defence capability and first and last give great buy signals.
The question is no longer whether autonomy will define the future.
The question is whether we can build the industrial ecosystem required to deliver it at the speed, scale, and affordability that modern defence demands.
Factories win wars. Scalable production secures the future. Without real programs and buy signal, it is just talk!
