The decarbonization path for heavy commercial aviation has hit a fundamental thermodynamic constraint. While electric propulsion and low-power alternatives show promise for smaller regional fleets, they lack the raw power density required to sustain long-haul, twin-aisle global transit.

Within the Materials & Chemicals framework, specialized cryogenic infrastructure and extreme-temperature materials are redefining the aero-engine market. Rolls-Royce and easyJet’s landmark validation at NASA’s Stennis Space Center proves modified gas turbines can match traditional operational profiles with zero CO2 emissions. This pivots the industry from low-power fuel cells toward high-thrust hydrogen combustion architectures delivering over 10MW of equivalent power.
