Finally finished this expression study of Sassy Quokka Aziraphale I've had sitting unfinished for like a month. Inspired by this group of classic Aziraphale faces from a "What Aziraphale are you today" poll:
whisper whisper
AND ANOTHER THING...
Where was Aziraphale "heart eyes for Crowley" Fell in season 3, hmm?
This dynamic might be the thing I'm most sad about losing. Because Crowley certainly didn't rescue him this time.
I hated Aziraphale from the finale. Like, nothing against Aziraphale himself as a character from Book and S1, I just hated what the plot did to him on S2 and Finale! Of the things I hated… like…
1- When Aziraphale tells Jesus that everyone he loves is dead. Seriously, do you remember the meaning of the word subtlety, Aziraphale?
2- He doesn't seem like the best leader.
3- He literally only came back to Earth because needed help, and even then he tried to lie about it. “I've come to help you, Crowley” “No, you haven't! This is about Jesus!”.
And he even admits it in the car, he basically tells Crowley that if he knew where Jesus was, he would... “I wouldn't need you”.
4- When Crowley suggests going to heaven for help, Aziraphale simply says: “To Heaven? You most certainly are not”.What do you mean? You wanted him to go with you before! Why not now? (Crowley's going anyway).
5- And then he suggests that hell must have stolen the book of life: “What if Hell is actually behind this? Someone must've had a motive for the theft. A motive for the murder”. Seriously, hasn't he gotten over this whole “sides” thing yet?
You know in season 1, when Aziraphale and Crowley have this dialogue: “You can stay at my place, if you like”, “I don’t think my side would like that”, “You don’t have a side any more. Neither of us do. We’re on our own side”. So, we were hoping that Season 2 and the Finale would make Aziraphale finally understand this and that they could be a "us". But...
You know in season 2, when he said: “obviously you said no to Hell, you're the bad guys. But Heaven... Well, it, it's the side of Truth. Of, of Light. Of Good”. We kept trying to add depth to him when he say it, in theories and fanfictions, so it wouldn't be taken literally. Because it wasn't possible that he still believed that! Right? But, look, he does! None of those flashbacks in season 2 really have any consistency, because in the end, Aziraphale didn't learn anything.
Season 2 and the Finale are a disservice to Aziraphale's character.
6- And then Crowley takes him to eat, and he's all: “You know, I'm not going to eat. I'm not that angel any longer. No, it's my job to set an example for all the other angels”, what do you mean? After all this time living on Earth, shouldn't he have moved beyond the "status quo" and know how harmful it was for both sides?
7 - Then he literally demands that Crowley forgive him; “I need you to forgive me”.
8- And yes, I know he says nice things like; “I chose Heaven because of you. You showed me what it meant to be brave, To stand up for what I believed in” and “How could we have been happy there, knowing that we were leaving all these people to goodness knows what awfulness? I just wanted to save everything, and... and... so that everybody could have a chance, including us”. (...)
But then everything is destroyed and only the two of them remain… But Aziraphale doesn't even seem to care… like… “Well, there's just us. In the whole of everything. It's a place for us”. Seriously? For someone who said he was so determined to save the world and its people, he let go of EVERYTHING very quickly.
And of course he chooses Crowley NOW, he was the last thing left. Crowley is literally the last option left. What else did Aziraphale have to choose from?
And Crowley became a martyr protagonist OUT OF NOWHERE. He's the one who takes care of the bookshop in Aziraphale's absence, he's the one who swaps the Bentley so the bookshop won't be set on fire (again). He's the one who helps Aziraphale, despite all the pessimism he felt ABOUT THE WORLD and his romantic disappointment. And when everything is destroyed, he is the one who says: “We've got nothing”. He's the one who says: “I want answers, and I want them now”.
Suddenly, Aziraphale wants Crowley because he's all that's left. But it's too late. Crowley suddenly wants something other than Aziraphale.
And to make matters worse, he's convinced that that universe is a game, which is actually emphasized throughout the episode, but the problem is when he thinks that to improve things he needs to exchange that universe for another supposedly better one.
Okay, so the universe is a game for God. I actually liked the plot trying to recapture this fact, which is present in both the book and season 1. It was also interesting how Jesus discovered the card game and then gave people the right answer they needed, because "if you choose to listen him, you choose the right answer every time". Haha... That plot point was clever? Maybe. But in the end, Jesus is really useless, besides serving as a biblical pun for the audience's humor. No, wait, nobody's laughing. So it wasn't even good for humor.
And the whole thing about the universe being a game. Okay. It's the philosophical biblical question that has existed since the beginning, "how can free will and predetermination exist at the same time?".
The episode even tries to show how, from the player's perspective, there is free will, because we choosing the cards based on what has been offered. But from the dealer point of view, there isn't, because the dealer (God) knows the cards offered, knows the past, present and future, and also has the possibility of manipulating the game. Hence the predetermination. Both, free will and predetermination, coexist within the premise of the game. It is up to the dealer to deal the cards as pleases; it is up to the player to play. Free will exists only as far as God allows it to exist, along with predetermination.
And God allows Crowley to choose… the last card in the Game!
But Crowley could have chosen to keep the same universe, only without supernatural influence and instead governed by the laws of physics from then on. Hence, all the ancient supernatural beings became human. And retained their memories. Happy ending.
But they didn't bring Jesus to give them the right answer! Too bad!
So Crowley... he swaps the old universe for a new one... if this was all a game... then his choice was part of the game too? Yeah, he picked THE WRONG CARD again. Crowley, you're terrible at a game of skill and chance! Why are you even trying?????
Like, don't let depressed people make decisions. Or play games! They tend to be bad at it.
And Aziraphale… who should be correcting him… Suddenly agrees? For someone who was so determined to save the world and its people, even sacrificing love for it, he agreed to all this far too quickly. The only time he decides to agree with Crowley without hesitation, it had to be precisely when Crowley was determined to make such a monumentally bad decision?
I think the comedy lies in the fact that they've already made so many bad decisions up to that point, that the audience should be laughing at how terrible those decisions are. Because they're so bad it feels like a parody of themselves.
But... Oh, no, thats right, but they changed the system, didn't they! It's a new universe, without God… I mean… errrrrr…
... But then the new world is... Asa, Anthony, that snow globe suggesting that the past universe wasn't completely forgotten, and all the characters still present in the restaurant scene, together and mysteriously in the same place, including Adam, suggesting that if he's there, the others from previous seasons are too. Ineffable...
Ineffable?... But If God bluffed, that leads us to what Maggie said on S2: We're not a game. We're real people. You can't just pair us up for your amusement.
But... Is God just playing with them for amusement... yet?
Let's be honest. The end of season 1 was enough! Did we really need all this going down the road? We only followed this path because we wanted "Aziracrow". That's the only reason for the existence of S2 and the Finale. Not delivering that in a satisfactory way is like breaking the unspoken contract established with the audience.
And in the end, the characters of Aziraphale and Crowley weren't even well written; Crowley was too grumpy and had martyr-protagonist tones that he should never had. Aziraphale never got over the "sides" thing and seems like a real bastard the entire episode. The plot itself declines quite a bit. And even in the points it gets right, it's not enough to sustain a worthy ending.
Yeah, I didn't hate it, it has interesting points, it has funny parts, but overall, S2 and the Finale can be considered something apart...
On S2... Six episodes that develop random characters, not Crowley and Aziraphale! They never discussed what they were to each other, Aziraphale never addressed the fact that Crowley was living in the car. Six episodes, to find out that Gabriel and Beelzebub are in love, and how is that relevant to the world? Out of six, three episodes are flashbacks, which are fun, but ultimately don't lead to any real character development. S2, its a series of sketches that lead nowhere, because the central point for humanity and for the world, THE SECOND COMING, is never addressed in 6 episodes.
And the plot of season 2 ends by creating a conflict between Aziraphale and Crowley, dividing the audience and forcing everyone to choose a side to defend. This kind of conflict didn't exist before! We loved them both, without rivalries, without having to argue about who was right or wrong.
And the Finale, is too rushed to make sense as a consistent whole.
It's mad how I still can't get over... although I'm trying! I have mixed feelings about Season 2 and the Finale now. There are things I like and things I hate.
My opinion is just mine, my interpretation of everything is just mine, and other people may have seen things from different angles and found things to love in Season 2 and the Finale! I'm not trying to say you should stop lovin it if you love it! Everyone has own interpretation! It's a bittersweet plot and ending that allows for MULTIPLE ways of looking at everything that happened. So I understand why some people are anti go3 too.
It's so mad that a story that was supposed to teach us that sides don't matter that much, ended up dividing us!
Yeah, in the end, Season 1 is the Zenith, everything else looks like a jumble of distortions compared to it.
