I do think it’s worth “examining your kinks,” at the very least because if you can find an underlying theme you can use it to find other, stranger kinks. Broaden your horizons
Asking “Why does this seemingly self-evidently horrible thing excite me so much?” can lead you to so many cheerful vistas of self-discovery!
YES! And ya know, occasionally you may examining your kinks and discover that some of them find some of their roots in parts of your personality and socialization that you’d rather not look into. Which is uncomfortable to discover, but if you shut the door and go “well, I guess this kink if forbidden now and we will suppress it”, you block the path to both pleasure and personal growth. Whereas if you examine that part in a way that is kind and nonjudgmental to yourself, you may find that you unlocks doors to a whole new world of being a better kinkier stranger person.
“My kinks are completely SEPARATE from who I am as a person and say NOTHING about me” isn’t the kink-positive defense people think it is. It’s a hangover from puritanism. It’s trying to keep the weird stuff at a safe distance because we’re not yet fully ready to accept the weirdness as part of who we are.
My kinks probably do say stuff about who I am, what makes me feel comfortable, what makes me feel desired, etc. But someone with kinks identical to mine could be into that stuff for completely different reasons. So saying ‘yeah actually my kinks are part of me’ is no invitation to diagnose each other. It’s an invitation to self-exploration. The only one that can figure out where my kinks fit in my life is ME.
Thinking about how around Halloween I went to a gay bar and one of the bartenders had "We Won't Go Back" bedazzled on the back of their costume... of fucking Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The way so many LGBTQ people in the United States are stuck in utterly false consciousness about how their rights were won and who their heroes should be genuinely makes me want to cry.
The inevitable result of bourgeoisie "civil rights" discourses is that marginalized people come to idolize and lionize the members of the ruling class who put the rubber stamp on what rights and concessions are eeked out to them after years of struggle. The people who actually struggled, who led their communities to fight and win against the laws and systems that kept them oppressed, become forgotten or are viewed as simply one part of the process that ends with the Supreme Court Justice or President, who by definition can never be their allies or leaders. It fucking sucks.
Wow everyone is going through it. Hold my hand

platonic dates. platonic dates. platonic dates. let's go to a bookstore together, let's just buy some coffee, let's go eat our favourite food together, let's buy each other flowers, let's write poems for each other, let's write letter to each other, let's go shopping together, let's go on a walk together, let's just go buy groceries together, let's just get some juice and sit on stairs, let's go to the movies, let's go for a hike. let's just be together.
when you want affectionate, deeply intimate, long-lasting platonic friendships with people who you love with all your heart and are your whole world, but keep things very superficial with your sexual partners as fuckbuddies only.... am i the only one? i love holding hands and cuddling, doing each other’s nails and hair, cooking together, going shopping together, having someone you can call any time who will always be there for you and being that person for someone else. just not with the people i’m fucking.
i would love to have a platonic neighbor-spouse, a deep, pure, affectionate, supportive love (AND we both go out to have freaky sex with other, different people, and then come back and snuggle up under a blanket on the couch to dish about our hookups). platonic love is just so unselfish and nourishing. and platonic love is very romantic, just not sexual. oh god i think i’ve unlocked another level of being impossible. is there a word for what i just described?

a threesome, but one person is washing my hair....
— Edna St. Vincent Millay, from a letter to Arthur Davison Ficke
the commodification of friendship is the most annoying thing to come out of the internet in ages. like actually i love to break this to you but you're supposed to help your friends move even if it's hard work. or stay up with them when they're sad even if you're gonna lose sleep. you're supposed to listen to their fears and sorrows even if it means your own mind takes on a little bit of that weight. that's how you know that you care. they will drive you to the airport and then you will make them soup when they're sick. you're supposed to make small sacrifices for them and they are supposed to do that for you. and there's actually gonna be rough patches for both of you where the balance will be uneven and you will still be friends and it will not be unhealthy and they will not be abusive. life is not meant to be an endless prioritization of our own comfort if it was we would literally never get anywhere ever. jesus.

After my best friend died I became jealous of the fireflies and kept smashing them against my forehead. I wanted my loneliness to be visible to those I loved. For people to see the yellow balloons I hid in my lungs. What I’m saying is I couldn’t breathe for an entire year. When they tore down her elementary school, we all lined up, days later, for bricks. We held them against our bodies. I’d like to think this is how we embrace our ghosts. Years later, it took my grandfather three days to die. I grew so bored I left to get ice cream. In the car, with the July sun soaking my back, I let my tongue protest death. Hours after my grandfather died, I wanted to take a photo of his body. His skin the color of faded marigolds. As a child, when my goldfish died I mourned the entire ocean. My father told me children in Palestine die every day. Hours before dying from cancer, Jim said take care of yourself. I said you too. When I visit graveyards now, all I see is grass and grass and grass. I think about how it takes forever to get to nowhere. Maybe I’ve outlived my life. And would like to become a bird. Dear God. Dear Earth. Dear Clouds. Why should anything die? I want it all to live forever. What I mean is I want to stand in my garden and gaze at the sunflowers. Amen.

being an adult is just dragging urself kicking and screaming to things that you will enjoy and that will be good for you
clenching my teeth and muttering under my breath "you'll be happy you did it you'll be happy you did it you'll be happy you did it" as I physically force myself out the door to go Do Things
being very firm with myself every time I think about bailing and saying "no. you committed to this. it will improve your quality of life. you will enjoy it. now put on your big boy pants and go."

It’s important to realize that platonic love can sometimes seem a lot like romantic love.
It can make your heart pound and your stomach flutter. It can make you nervous to act upon it. It can be just as full of meaning and desire as any relationship, and it can be confusing at times, but that’s alright.
If it brings joy, that’s all that matters.
This is super important. Platonic relationships can be extremely moving and very emotional. Some people would literally give anything for some of their friends and that is an amazing part of humanity.
