âI felt very sad so I sat down. I felt so sad that I rested my head on my own knees and smoothed my own head. I felt so sad I couldnât imagine feeling any other way again. I said, I donât like this. I donât want to do this anymore. And I went back to lying in bed, just before the doorbell rang.â
â Jamaica Kincaid, from âWhat Have I Been Doing Lately,â At the Bottom of the River (via lifeinpoetry)

"Things to Think" - Robert Bly
Think in ways you've never thought before. If the phone rings, think of it as carrying a message Larger than anything you've ever heard, Vaster than a hundred lines of Yeats.
Think that someone may bring a bear to your door, Maybe wounded and deranged; or think that a moose Has risen out of the lake, and he's carrying on his antlers A child of your own whom you've never seen.
When someone knocks on the door, think that he's about To give you something large: tell you you're forgiven, Or that it's not necessary to work all the time, or that it's Been decided that if you lie down no one will die.

what do you think makes a poem âgoodâ?
I donât know I donât really intellectualize it itâs mostly like. does it make my tummy hurt does it give me goosebumps does it make my heart beat faster. I havenât really gone further than emily dickinson saying if I read a book and it makes my whole body so cold no fire can ever warm me I know that is poetry if I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off I know that is poetry
may i ask what your thoughts are on contemporary poetry and the sentiment that contemporary poets donât care about language? i personally enjoy many contemporary poems so i was startled by this sentiment, but i am open to broadening my perspective :-)
oh well I do think that statement is unfair cuz the tweet that started all of that was a bit disingenuous claiming 75% of contemporary poems were tweets/tumblr posts in poem form when I read across the wide spectrum of poetry written and published today and its simply not true. however weâve also reached a certain momentum in which people will just write anything and call it poetry - something something substack era something something random celebrities pretending to be poets something something cut fruit tender something something. so obviously the few poems guilty of that that make the rounds a few times a year on social media are not representative of contemporary poetry as a whole and sure they can be accused of laziness/tumblr post like writing/etc but its simply not what contemporary poetry is actually like once you dig thru the surface level
