Tony awards nominations predictions
Only musicals and non-design awards! I really don't have the knowledge to speak of the plays but I wish everything could go to John Proctor is the Villain.
Maybe Happy Ending is a lock for a win from me. It's a beautiful piece of theatre, it has a great story with coming back from almost closing basically just on the back of word of mouth AND it's an original musical - voters should love it. Super deserved, my fave this season. I also see them nominating Just in Time over Buena Vista Social Club.
Pirates! The penzance musical
This is pretty much a two-horse race between Sunset and Gypsy, I think Sunset will edge it because Broadway voters looove a reimagined classic. Both deserve it, imo.
Michael Arden, Maybe Happy Ending
Jamie Lloyd, Sunset Boulevard
David Cromer, Dead Outlaw
Robert Hastie, Operation Mincemeat.
(for a dollar name a woman). I think Jamie is taking it, though I see Michael having a good chance. Same reasons as above, the production is just so different from what we've seen in the past. Personally I'd give it to Michael (might be my mhe bias) but Jamie is a deserving winner too.
I've seen people say it's not the strongest score year - I think all scores are just very subdued and in service of the story so none stand out immediately. Maybe Happy Ending should take as carry-over from the Best Musical tony, imo it is also the most deserving, original and unique - jazz and fireflies!!! what's not to love!!!!
I actually have no idea where this will go, I can see them giving this one to Operation Mincemeat as a 'we see you' award, but for me due to how beautiful and complex Maybe Happy Ending is it is my fave to win. Would be happy with any tho!
Nicole Scherzinger, Sunset Boulevard
Helen J. Shen, Maybe Happy Ending
Megan Hilty, Death Becomes Her
Another of the two-horse races of the season. Personally I'd give it to Audra for the unique spin on the role, just vocally speaking, but Nicole deserves it too. Could literally go either way I just feel like they won't let Gypsy go without a win. ALSO nominate Helen or else,,, she is SO deserving and brings so much warmth and complexity to the robot, her voice is stunning and it would be a great push to her career... I see so many people snubbing her it makes me so sad.
Darren Criss, Maybe Happy Ending
Tom Francis, Sunset Boulevard
Andrew Durand, Dead Outlaw
Jonathan Groff, Just in Time
Jeremy Jordan, Floyd Collins
Last two-horse race of the season (omg And They're Off from A New Brain reference???), I think Tom takes it over Darren. Personally I'd be super happy with both, and I think Darren is doing a beautiful job. However, this would solidify Tom Francis as 'The Next Big Thing' which is where I see it going and I don't think the Tonys would pass up the opportunity of being the first American media awards to recognize him.
Bernadette Peters, Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends
Justina Machado, Real Women Have Curves
Natalia Veneta, Buena Vista Social Club
This is such an OPEN category this season, I'm not even sure of my nominees. Could go so many different ways, I chose Natalia from the reviews that I've heard and because I think they may want to honor the show in some way and this seems like the one where they have the best shot. I'd be happy with any!
Dez Duron, Maybe Happy Ending
Jak Malone, Operation Mincemeat
David Thaxton, Sunset Boulevard
One of the locks of the season, anything other than Jak Malone walking away with a Tony is a crazy snub. He is FANTASTIC and Operation Mincemeat is such a great show. I am (as far as I read) the only person betting on a Dez Duron nomination, but he is the princess track of the season that score stands on his beautiful vocal chords and he should be honored for that.
That's it! Design awards are always so difficult without seeing every show so I've decided not to include them. This has been such a great season of theatre, I love Broadway we are so lucky to see such talented performers and creators.
