Goddddddd thinking about that narrative moment when something horrible is happening and the character who has been frantically trying to come up with a way to fix it and getting more and more frantic and panicky just—stops. Because. Oh. There’s the solution. They’re not getting out of this alive but like. It’s a solution for everyone else. Okay. Okay.
I'm a BIG fan of low ranking characters suddenly thrust into a position of authority they're unprepared for. a young princess, too far down the line of succession to merit any training, forced onto the throne when her whole family dies in one attack. a lowly technician on a team who finds themself the defacto leader when a mission goes wrong and every single person above them is captured or killed. a group of strangers comes together for survival, and the only person with any assertiveness gets assigned a leadership role, even though they have no special skills. do these characters rise to the challenge and lead their respective groups to victory? do they crash and burn under the pressure so hard no one ever trusts them again? do they massively restructure their whole society because any system that puts them in charge can't be doing things right?
"Write character relationships that are normal" WRONG ☝ CODEPENDENCY BEAM 💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥
"if it had to be anyone, i'm glad that it's you" remains one of my all-time winning dynamics btw. when the intimacy of trust is twisted by a desperate need for control into something possessive and uncomfortably dubiously consensual it's like masochist cocaine.
+ tbh it hits best there's no love or even lingering fondness to it, especially not romantic. like this isn't some cutesy enemies to lovers setup, it's a refusal to submit. it's a key turning in the lock to a door slammed shut in your face, unyielding no matter how hard you fling yourself against it and beg to be let in, and therein lies the appeal for me.

‘the protagonist should be endearing and relatable’ the protagonist should make the audience scream and start banging on the one-way glass of the fourth wall. the protagonist should burn their entire life down and make the world’s worst sandcastle from the ashes. if they aren’t the cause of at least 50% of their own problems what are we doing here
Assassin Character Quirks
obsessed with cleaning because they are used to not leaving any traces behind
sneaking up on people without meaning to because they move silently
very light and short sleep, meaning they are a lot more tired and nap whenever possible
having a ridiculous amount of weapons on them at all times
instinctively shielding face from any and all security cameras
also, generally hating having pictures of them taken and especially uploaded
scars in odd places, especially hands and arms from training
holding their breath and pressing to the wall whenever someone enters, even if it is a friend or loved one who already knows they are there
wildly uncomfortable with attention from many people
quiet in conversations with a group because they are used to listening, not participating
I do love when two very fucked up people are in very fucked up love with each other
Much as I love a living weapon who is dehumanised and degraded, I also like when becoming a weapon is framed as aspirational. Prove you deserve to surpass your human weakness! Don't you want to be more than flesh and blood?
Like IDK I think you should make your whumpees recruits compete for the honour of serving such a worthy master or cause in such a great manner. You could make them do just about anything to earn it. And having earned it through so much effort, it must be an honour, right? You were the only one good enough for your master.
Thinking of like... a position as the 'King's Sword', or in an elite military corps, or something... something really famous, lauded and mythologised. The sacrifice of one's humanity framed as the greatest sacrifice one could make to one's king/god/country, and only the most worthy may offer it up. Congrats, you get a fancy induction ceremony, a few minutes being applauded by a massive crowd, and then you get to kill in someone else's name until you die.
also thinking of death game entrance exam. that too.
Ok, it's more like extended training that's also a competition to whittle recruits down to The Best/Most Worthy Candidates. And having put that much effort in - dare I say incurred that much moral injury - while your view was clouded by the competition; the idea that this brutal frenzy was the trial by fire, that it was temporary - well! Not very nice to consider that what you won might be more of the same. That maybe no one's treating you like something honoured or valued at all. Much easier to tell yourself that this is what you wanted; after all, you fought so hard for it.

the "came back wrong" trope except like... they didnt. like this mad scientists wife died, and so he studied necromancy, brought her back, and she came back and it all worked. like she came back exactly the same as she was before with literally no difference. but the scientist guy is like "oh no... what have i done.... shes Different now!!!! she came back Wrong!!!!" and shes just like. chilling. reading a book. cooking dinner. shes just so so normal but in the guys mind hes like "oh shes soooo weird" but shes just normal

NO its a JOKE and YOU DONT GET IT. ITS NOT THAT DEEP
While she was dead he put his memory of her on such a high pedestal that she could never live up to it alive
alternatively‚ she came back perfectly fine but he thinks she came back wrong‚ because the tragic reality is that he never actually knew his wife
im going INSANE thats MY POST.
It's your post but the journey to posting it changed it to such a degree that even its closest intimacies are now foreign to you. Sorry dude.

for you and your warped reflection

The idea of a building you can only enter through teleportation or a magic portal scares me. Not just because teleportation kills you but because what happens if the power goes out or the resident wizard has a stroke or something like that has to be a fire hazard
There’s a surprising number of mundane places in fiction that can only be entered through some magical doorway or teleporter of some kind and I know it’s for the cool vibes but still you need some kind of emergency exit in there
actually objectively hilarious to have a sudden "oh god there's a metadimensional incursion and we're trapped in the teleport-only building" alarm go off and this exhausted-looking security guard just goes "okay everybody follow me" and there's actually a door on the third basement floor that leads out to one of those little bunker entrance shacks and it's just like. in nevada. and then you have to sign an NDA.
I think that if a story ever pulls a line like "You could have destroyed your magic with a stunt like that!" or "Pushing ahead with your magic too quickly can have dangerous consequences!" then the story should be obligated at some point to show me these magically disabled people.
All stories should have more disabled people, honestly, because disability is a basic part of being alive! What am I supposed to think of any given fictional community if I never see any elderly people, any retired people, any injured people, or any disabled people?
But seriously, a lot more fantasy stories specifically could really stand to show people who have been burned by magic to various degrees and are now living with the consequences. I'm too used to the protagonists fainting and sleeping extreme recklessness off without issue.
