Been thinking a lot about how the central myth of my life since I was an infant was the idea that I was born fundamentally broken, dirty, and undeserving of love but an omnipotent entity in the sky was so benevolent and condescending that it loved me anyway (even though I did not deserve it) HOWEVER the only way I could be made unbroken and clean enough to someday approach this entity was by the torture and death of that entity’s inherently pure offspring
Anyway now I struggle to accept that I’m loved because I fear I am fundamentally broken and dirty inside. Probably not related tho
it's wild how long it took me to see that god is entirely defined by his relationship to us
what do we know about god, really?
everything i thought i knew about him is actually about us: our creation, our salvation
what are god's hobbies?
how does he spend his time when he's not obsessing about us?
who would god be without us?
it makes so much more sense that we created him and not the other way around
Thoughts from reading Humankind by Rutger Bregman:
Humans are programmed to be cooperative. Things that can upset this programming are:
Evil successfully masquerading as good - people think they’re helping when they’re really causing harm
Personal relationships (terrorists usually enjoy the camaraderie of the group more than their ideology itself)
Tribalism/ us vs them thinking
Can’t help thinking about how weekly church services reinforce ALL these things.
Of COURSE they have to reinterpret evil over and over to explain that bad is good and it’s actually loving to chastise your friends so you can keep them from hell.
Of COURSE the church had to say we have a personal relationship with God. That relationship is the most important, most loving ever.
Of COURSE they had to constantly reinforce us vs them. The church vs the world. You can’t trust them. They don’t love like we do. You can’t get attached to them. They’re going to hell.

The thing that 90% of religious discourse on this site misses is that there are two religious hegemonies in America: one that privileges Christianity above all other religions, and *one that privileges religion in general above irreligion.*
Most people won't acknowledge or don't want to talk about the second one. It's why atheists are consistently ranked as the least trustworthy and least electable religious minority, it's why there's not a single open atheist in Congress and only .2% who are unaffiliated, it's why Jewish and Muslim faith leaders are joining evangelical Christians in suing to force prayer to be allowed in public schools, it's why people are fine with others talking about their faith but if an atheist brings up their beliefs it's viewed as inherently rude and aggressive, it's why there are people who may not like other religions but they hate atheists because they genuinely believe that you cannot be a good person without religion in your life, it's why there's so many posts on this website about how "you don't have to be religious but you DO have to believe in something!"
And I'm not trying to play Oppression Olympics here, obviously no religious minority is having a great time in the US right now. But there's an awful lot of people on here who really wanna argue about how atheists - who make up 4% of the population, 0% of congress, and are the single most liberal voting bloc of any religion - are actually all far-right Tech Bros just waiting to enact a genocide on the poor innocent religious people, and it starts to make more sense when you realize they have a vested interest in getting rid of the first hegemony but not the second.
"my version of christianity isn't about sin or guilt or hell, it's just about loving others and being glad that jesus saved us!"
now hold on. saved you from what now, exactly?
Look, we joke a lot, but really, "you were born evil, wretched, worse than the scum of the earth, and it took killing a god to make you salvageable, so now you'd better be grateful to that god and thank him 10,000 times a day for it and fill your thoughts with him 24/7 and abide by the letter of his every word, lest you suffer unimaginable torture for all of eternity" is a truly horrendous thing to believe about yourself and other people
as an ex christian, who hasnt been one in like almost 10 years now; this is so genuinely what it feels like. im proudly and openly part of the lgbtq+ community in multiple ways and a baby bat and emo and even after so long i sometimes still find myself feeling terriffied of enjoying the stuff i do, i find myself genuinely scared when i see someone wearing cross jewelry or someone iknew from that ugly chapter of my life. i kept praying and praying; they make u believe that if ur prayers arent coming true then ure not praying hard enough, u dont actually believe in god. they tell u that if u arent christian then ull burn forever in unimaginable agony. i was 5 years old. Five.
as a little kid until i was about 11, i cried when my mom said i couldnt go to church on wednesdays bc my homework wasnt done. i cried and begged and begged bc i thought if i didnt go then id die and go to hell. the shame and guilt i still feel nearly 10 years later is completely undeserved. that liitle elementary school kid did not deserve to be terrified of death bc "what if i didnt believe hard enogh?""what if i didnt convert enough people?""what if i didnt bring enough money from my mom to get into heaven?".
it is a doomsday cult. but instead of cutting off contact with ur family, they demand u make them join too. fuck the church, fuck organized religion. fuck every single pastor who thinks the only way to get into a good afterlife is through hate and fearmongering.
the christian veneration of the lamb has always been terrifying to me in ways i can’t explain
here’s this figure that is vulnerable and easily abused and what’s admirable about it is that it doesn’t fight back and it doesn’t try to defend itself and it’s suffering is noble because it just sits there and takes it. pain is beautiful when you surrender to pain, suffering is godly when you don’t question or try to protect yourself and survival is ugly… like it is just me or is anybody else’s fucking skin crawling rn!!

[progressive christian voice]: Christianity doesn't actually say [thing that has been church doctrine across most denominations for centuries]. Christianity actually says [recent theological concept which has been decried as heresy by the church establishment].
James 4:17 “If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.”
And the world is full of suffering and violence done in God’s name, and he knows “the good he ought to do” (and has the power to do it!) And instead does nothing. God is sinning. God is sin.
maybe no one's a real christian?

"tumblr's the only social media without algorithms!" "you can still be anonymous on tumblr!" "tumblr's so nice because you don't have to show your face!" WRONG tumblr is special because you can have 3000 followers and still get an average of seven likes a post. i'm doing stand up comedy at a packed venue and one person is laughing
youre right im sorry beautiful
