Hello, welcome! Our names are Mayfly and Aka. This is our daemonism sideblog! (Our main is @oughtful!)
We've been part of the daemian community since 2013. The practice of daemonism, and its unique community and culture, is something that's really important to us - it's special!
We'd like to use this space to share information about daemonism, and answer questions if anyone has any.
(Note: we struggle with chronic fatigue so replies might be slow sometimes).

About us
While our practice of daemonism started out pretty conventional, it's been a long road since then! We're a bit of an odd duo in some ways. Fortunately, daemonism is very diverse as a practice and making it your own is basically part of the experience!
Our daemonism is plural, but not all is. Our own story with it is complex but maybe we'll share some time!
Mayfly (it/he) is the daemian. It's also a wolf therian.
Aka (ae/aes/aem/aemself) is the daemon. Ae's a joyful shapeshifter that will take the form of literally anything if it sounds fun and/or amusing. A bit of a clown. Aes full name is Akarthyx!
Mayfly's fitting daemon forms:
European hornet (analytic, possibly settled)
Polar bear (symbolic, uncertain)
European wild boar (personal, possibly settled)
Aka's fitting daemon forms:
Galah (symbolic & pullman, settled)
Our ask box is always open to genuine questions! We love talking about daemonism. ^u^

We'd like to include some stuff about our own practice of daemonism on this blog too, buuuut it's hard to figure out what to write about off the top of our head so we're gonna repurpose the 30 days of daemonism challenge from TDF for this (note: the link requires an active forum account to view). Not aiming to do these every day though, we're wayyy too flaky for that! '^^
Question one:
What is your current daemon form and why?
Aka's pretty whimsical in form choice when ae's projected. He definitely doesn't stick just to the forms which fit me, though ae uses those as "defaults". Ae doesn't have much personal connection to the forms which fit me, but ae likes "showing off how cool I am". So the forms don't "belong" to Aka; instead, ae uses them as a way of expressing aes affection for me (which is far more affection than I have for myself, if I'm being honest asjhdsjkahd),,
Lately, of forms which represent me, Aka's been favouring the polar bear. Until recently we had white-phase kermode bear as my symbolic form, and a black-phase American black bear before that. I did think kermode would be my settled symbolic form, at least for a while, but changes in our plural system led to some personal realisations that made me reconsider.
We're still not entirely sure whether polar bear will be what sticks, but out of bears, I think it works best. The biggest difference between a polar bear and a white kermode, to my mind, is the actual danger they pose. American black bears aren't very aggressive. They're viewed as more "safe" than most bears; they're easily scared off by loud noises and such. Polar bears are off at the other end of the spectrum – they are, after all, one of few predators that will still actively hunt human beings.
The change represents the realisation that I'm not quite as soft and gentle as I thought I was, and that's not necessarily been an easy realisation for me. It was Aka who picked out the polar bear form for now, because it's an animal which can represent both warmth and coldness, and an animal where those two ideas are deeply connected. Polar bears can be seen as both protective and caring, and intimidating and aggressive... and, like most bears, you see the greatest ferocity from them when you threaten the thing they protect.
I often use form-finding to work through my understanding of myself. It makes the whole process of introspection feel safer and more positive, and gives me something to find joy in at the end. Even though I do kind of wish the kermode bear still felt right for me, the understanding of myself I can find through the polar bear feels more complete, and there's comfort in that as well. And if things change again in the future, that's okay too!
And of course, I have Aka by my side through it all. Ae always keeps me on track. Ae reminds me that no matter who I am, and no matter what I find in here, myself is not a bad person to be. <3
A previously made an info post introducing the concept of form-finding in daemonism – that is, a process of looking for animals that represent who you are, which you can identify as your fitting daemon forms.
I'd like to make a few posts going over some different approaches to this!
There's a few established form-finding systems in the community (though they definitely aren't the limits of how form-finding can be done). Using a system is not mandatory, and a daemon's form isn't less valid or real if you choose not to use a system to find it.
The systems are handy if you want to find an unconventional daemon form – something you wouldn't think about otherwise; and they can be helpful too if you just don't know what kind of animal might represent you candidly. They also provide a bit more structure if you want to take a deeply introspective approach to finding a meaningful daemon form.
The most well-established form-finding system is called analytic. That's the one I'm gonna focus on here!
Analytic is, without a doubt, the least intuitive of the form-finding systems – it requires a bit of knowledge and study to really understand how it works. That's because the analytic system is entirely unique! It's unintuitive because it's just genuinely doesn't resemble any other approach to "animal personification" you're likely to find.
The Basics
Analytic works by interpreting animal behaviours as human personality traits.
So: analytic represents a specific thing about a person (their personality traits) and it draws this meaning from a specific place (animal behaviour). It doesn't use conventional symbolism at all, unlike the other two systems.
Analytic can be hard to learn, but it's very rewarding! That said, it isn't a good fit for everyone and that's okay. The kind of introspection on your own behavioural patterns which analytic form-finding calls for can be a real challenge, because it's not a way we're usually taught to look at ourselves.
Interpreting animals in an analytic way is also a pretty specialised skill, though it's one you can learn!
How It Works
Analytic interpretation, at its heart, builds on a speculative idea of "why" animals might act in certain ways. Even though literal animal behaviours rarely apply to human personality, their underlying motives can! This concept can be built on, through interpretation – so that, from a deep look into an animal's behaviours, you can piece together an idea of what sort of person that animal might align with.
It's not a science, even though we draw from scientific research a lot on the animal behaviour side. The interpretation of the behaviour is more personal and artful – not everyone would interpret the same animal the same way. This means not everyone with the same analytic form would necessarily relate to that animal in the same way, because each might interpret its behaviours differently. This isn't a flaw in the system; it's actually a big part of what makes it work!
An Example
I've written a quick example of how I interpret behaviour, to try and get the idea across a bit better. For this I've chosen (at random) the snow leopard, Panthera uncia.
Snow leopards are solitary animals which are primarily active in the early morning and early evening. Like many large carnivores, they spend a lot of time resting; for this, snow leopards often choose high cliffs and ridges, which provide good visibility and shelter from the wind. Though solitary, they scent mark their home ranges and travel routes – communicating to others their presence and identity. They don't defend a territory, so their ranges often overlap with others, but they avoid making direct contact except for reproduction. (Source: Wikipedia)
Being solitary as they are, I think a snow leopard would represent someone who's quite comfortable in their own company, and on the flip side, probably isn't a big fan of intense social situations. Snow leopards do keep tabs on their neighbours though, which is the purpose of the scent marks – so I think they wouldn't be entirely reclusive, but might need a lot of down time after socialising, to rest and process.
I think they'd prefer to keep socialisation low-key; maybe they're the sort of person who'd rather quiet companionship over active discussion or playful banter. They seem like they'd value keeping tabs on what's happening around them, even if they're not always going to directly engage.
Between the scent marking and the animal's preference for resting in places with good visibility, I think they'd be quite attentive to their surroundings – the sort of person who'd pick up on the little things and find them important enough to remember. So maybe they wouldn't be eager to go to someone's birthday party, but they might be the kind of person to remember a specific thing their friend wants and surprise them with it on the day. They'd probably appreciate friends who can respect their need for space, calm, and privacy.
Where To Learn More
So, say you're one of the specific few people who finds this idea very cool (it's niche for a reason!): you might be wondering where to go next, to learn more or even get involved.
The best way to really get an understanding of what the analytic system does is to read analyses. This is where I suggest anyone start, because it can give you an idea of whether the concept really appeals to you before you put in any work to learn it!
My most recent full analysis was of the sika deer. Full analyses like this include the reasoning behind each interpretation, so you can get an idea of where the trait came from, or the reason for interpreting the behaviour that way. The Daemon Forum houses a huge repository of analytic interpretations which anyone can look through, either by using the index or just browsing! This index includes long-form interpretations (called analyses), as well as mid-sized studies and short vibes.
If you wanted to try your hand at finding an analytic form, or were interested in learning to interpret, your best next step would be to join the community. Analytic is a collaborative creation, and can be pretty hard to learn on your own. You can get into analytic even if you don't have a daemon, or have interest in any other aspects of daemonism practice. Given that it's a subcommunity of an already pretty niche group, it's a pretty small bunch of us who work with this system and we're always happy to have new folks get involved!
There's also an array of analytic resources on TDF that can't be accessed without an activated forum account, including my main analytic guide which digs into the concept in more detail. The discord server has a channel for it too! (I hang around there a lot and I love talking about analytic). :D
Last Thoughts
Because of the way analytic works – and its complete disregard for conventional symbolism – you can end up with some really unique, unexpected results. That's part of the fun of it!
However, it's not gonna appeal to everyone and I think you do have to approach it with a bit of an open mind. Usually, your fitting analytic form isn't going to be an animal you already love. Sometimes it won't even be an animal you've heard of (and it may well even be an animal you dislike).
Finding an analytic form can also be a pretty long process, though it varies. It took me years! So, in a sense, it's not just a thing you do – it's an entire journey, likely with highs and lows and unexpected turns along the way (and even when you think you've reached the end, you might just experience something which changes how you see yourself enough that you're right back at it again)!
So, in short, analytic isn't always going to be the right approach for everyone and that's okay. If you read this and feel nothing but a dawning horror: don't worry, you don't have to do any of this! Only if you think it sound interesting, cool, or fun. (Some of us do find this fun. This has been a major hobby of mine since I was a teenager. Yes, I am weird).
If you're looking for something which you can connect with more intuitively – something which matches your overall vibe, or which other people would understand a bit easier – then the pullman or symbolic systems would likely have more appeal. I'll be making separate posts about those later!
Or you can find a daemon form without any system! The most important thing is that your daemon form/s feel meaningful to you; you should always choose whichever approach feels right for you, first and foremost. c:
One thing I think is important for understanding the daemian community – especially if you're coming from an alterhuman perspective – is that daemonism is not a word for a shared experience, nor a shared identity.
Daemonism is a practice. The concept of it can be used by anyone: alterhuman or not, plural or not. It can be pure playfulness. It can be imaginary, and that's okay! That's a beautiful experience in its own respect!
There's no universal daemian experience because we accept and embrace that our minds, and our experiences, are ours alone.
The community isn't built on a shared experience – just a shared idea which we all create unique versions of.
Some people stick closer to the basic idea we started with. Some just take what they like from it and throw out the rest. Some only take vague inspiration from it. Some people adapt it more than others, sometimes due to being neurodivergent, plural, and/or alterhuman.
It's still daemonism because daemonism isn't defined by us all "doing the same thing" or "having the same experience".
Daemonism is, for the most part, defined by a person deciding that they want to call what they are doing or experiencing daemonism.
And a large part of that is often in connection to the community, whether directly or in a peripheral way, by taking inspiration from the practice, making use of the community's writings, and so on.
This is why I think daemonism is often misunderstood in an alterhuman context. Daemonism is not an experience, it's not an identity – it's just an idea we each take and make our own. And that's what it should be. That's the beauty of it!
Anyone could be a daemian if they want to. There's no requirements. A lot of people get started with daemonism purely because it sounds fun! A lot of people start with only their imagination, and many people remain so.
For others, it might become something else in time, or they might discover there was something underlying their imaginings all along. It's no more or less a practice of daemonism, either way.
A lot of alterhuman concepts don't apply to daemonism because of this. Fact is, there's plenty of daemians who are orthohumans too, and plenty of people who specifically see their daemonism as an orthohuman practice.
I see it get included under the alterhuman umbrella a lot, and I feel like it gives the wrong first impression to come at it from that angle by default.
Really, it's more comparable with being a furry. For some people, it is a deep, impactful, life-altering experience, and the people who feel that way are a vital part of the community. But equally, for some it is an exercise in whimsy, playfulness, or creativity – and those people are no less members of the community for it.
We're not united by being plural, or having thoughtforms, or being alterhuman. We're united by being a bunch of people who were inspired by some books (or a film or TV show) to play around with the idea of daemons, and ended up sticking with it for one reason or another.
While the individual experience can be very deep indeed, that isn't what makes daemonism what it is.

Written info on daemonism is sparse overall, but one thing I've noticed is that where it comes up (especially in alterhuman circles), folks seem to mostly be familiar with one side of it and not the other.
Daemonism is a practice with two different, equal sides to it. One is the part people seem more familiar with: finding and building a relationship with your daemon/s. The other part is looking for meaningful daemon forms to represent yourself! You can do both, or only one or the other – some folks have daemons but don't form-find, and some folks form-find but don't have daemons.
Now, I love all aspects of daemonism, but I have to say: I am specifically very, very eager about form-finding. (One of the form-finding systems, called analytic, has been one of my main special interests since I was a teen!)
Form-finding is a way of introspecting, and representing the understanding you gain from that in a way that is affirming and fun. It's like if you took personality typing, removed all the limits and rigidity and weird elitism, made the results pool functionally infinite, and then made the whole thing reward you with a cool animal instead of a combination of letters or numbers.
Or, alternately, it's kind of like if you were looking for a fursona species and went really, really deep about it.
Honestly? It's great fun! It's also, if you approach it right, really helpful for understanding yourself as a person. Form-finding affirms all people are valuable and special for being the unique individuals they are: just like how all animals are fascinating, beautiful, and deeply adapted to fit into the ecosystems in which they live. As a neurodivergent person especially, this has been very healing for me. I can see that even the things which set me apart from everyone else – even the things other people might not always like about me – are neutral, and okay, and make me the unique individual I am. And some of these things I've even come to see as my greatest strengths!
Form-finding can be casual or deep. Some folks look for a daemon form that feels nice and makes them happy; others look for something that lays them bare, warts and all. There's different form-finding systems which offer different approaches, and represent different parts of you – you can look for a fitting form in any or all of them.
A fitting form represents the person, not the daemon. This was originally based on the way daemons work in His Dark Materials – where a daemon, a shapeshifter in childhood, in time inevitably settles into a single animal form which represents the true nature of their person.
It's an aspect of daemonism, but whether a person's daemon wants to actually use their daemian's fitting forms is a personal choice! Because of how form-finding works, sometimes you end up with something entirely unexpected, and it might be that your daemon absolutely loves being a fluffy fox but isn't such a fan of your giant cichlid analytic form. :P That's okay! You can find meaning in a fitting form whether or not your daemon wants to use it (and, indeed, even if you don't have a daemon)!
Sometimes you'll see folks refer to their own settled forms. This is also inspired by His Dark Materials, but naturally, we put our own spin on it! A settled form isn't a form your daemon is stuck in forever. A settled form is any form which you feel represents you in a deep, candid, meaningful way – essentially a way of recognising the special place that form has in your self-perception or self-understanding.
What makes a form "settled" is up to the individual person, but it's worth saying that the community does treat this concept with a level of gravity and meaning; it's usually the end point of a long journey of introspection and soul-searching. It's special! There's even a tradition in the community to mark the day you settle as a form and celebrate it like a birthday.
A daemon may or may not choose to use their daemian's settled form – or they might use it sometimes and shapeshift other times. Like basically every aspect of daemonism, it's varied and mostly comes down to what daemian and daemon want to do. If a daemon doesn't want to use a person's fitting or settled form, that doesn't mean it doesn't fit! There's a lot of reasons a daemon might not want to use a person's fitting form, including their own preferences or comfort. ^^
I hope to write some more on this topic in future! Probably starting with some info on the different form-finding systems (that is: the different approaches to finding a meaningful daemon form).
The last thing I want to emphasise here is that it is definitely okay to only be interested in one side of daemonism. Having a daemon doesn't mean you have to form-find or seek out a settled form, and you can look for a meaningful fitting form whether or not you have a daemon. Both are parts of daemonism, and a daemian can do both or only one, with no pressure to engage in the other. c:
not sure where else to ask but is it rude/weird to contact your daemon with the express purpose of getting help with self esteem/self compassion issues or would that be considered rude? I'm just worried about hurting his feelings or committing a social faux pax is all
Absolutely not! In fact that kind of reassurance is a huge part of why a lot of people develop them for the purposes of improving their mental health. It's kind of like ... an extended form of an affirmation, in my mind.
Tbh there aren't really any social faux pas that I can think of within the community because each daemon-daemian relationship is SO unique. If it helps you, then go for it! If it feels weird, perhaps talking to your daemon about why it doesn't feel quite right might help you figure out why as well :)
honestly it is really funny that my daemon has a fursona.
no, not his settled form or a comfort form or anything like that. he's a cat. a big fluffy orange maine coon. all the time. he doesn't take the shape of anything other than that.
his fursona is a hyena. he doesn't take the shape of a hyena. he doesn't behave like a hyena. MY fursona isn't a hyena (although I guess since we're the same guy maybe it also is lol).
BASED!! i have LOTS of fursonas tho im not super ~committed~ to any of them lmao!!!! theyre just so FUN!!!!
my "main" is just my feathered wyvern form (which is teeechnically a personal form but the way i relate to it is its basically my fursona wheeee)
but i also have like. well. besides like a dozen concepts for silly guys i also have Cottonmouth Joe who is a giant cottonmouth and hes like a chaotic swamp man who loves nature but has no wisdom/ impulse control at all (and hes giant snake) (like not even anthro. his ass got NO limbs. hes just a big snake) (he wears clothes tho) and anyway we really gotta finish his ref cause hes iconic
wait wait i gotta dig up the sketch we did. one sec
guy who grabs every invasive python he comes across and keeps them as pets and loves them forever and gives them names like Candice and Mary Elizabeth (he has so many goddamn pythons)

so if daemons are you- what exactly are they? are they alive and have a consciousness? is it like talking to yourself or can they speak? Is there a pretend aspect to it? do u decide what animal they are? I have a lot of questions about it lol. like how do I go about creating one?
those are very good questions! i dont have a lot of experience with the daemonism community as i prefer to do my own thing in my little corner, so take all of this with a huge grain of salt and keep in mind that im only answering with how it is for Atticus (my daemon) and me
what exactly are daemons? the definition of daemon is "A personified other half of one’s internal dialogue, which usually has a name, gender and personality that often differs from that of said person. Daemons are usually imagined (or projected) in animal forms." so, imaginary animals that represent your internal voice.
are they alive and have a consciousness? yes... and no. it depends on the daemian honestly; some daemons are fully autonomous, while others are completely controlled by their human. my Atticus is somewhere in between: while most of the time hes me and says things that i would say, hes begun showing his own personality, sometimes even saying things that surprise me!
is it like talking to yourself or can they speak? both! its basically talking to yourself yeah, but "the other you" talks back. so for example, a non-daemians internal monologue could be something like this:
oh, i gotta to go to the shop soon, im running out of milk and eggs. oh, and i should grab some coffee while im at it, ive been meaning to try that new fancy brand. ill write it down so i dont forget.
while a daemian would separate this monologue in a dialogue, like this:
daemon: oh, were running out of milk and eggs.
daemian: yeah, we gotta go to the shop soon.
daemon: we should grab some coffee while were at it! that new brand weve been meaning to try.
daemian: ooh yeah the fancy one! ill write that down so we dont forget.
is there a pretend aspect to it? absolutely. in a nutshell, all you have to do to find your daemon is listen to yourself think and play pretend.
do you decide what animal they are? so, talking to your daemon is only half of what daemonism is. the other half is something called "form finding". a form is just the shape your daemon takes; in most cases this will be an earthly animal, but not necessarily. in daemonism form finding consists in analysing your personality and finding an animal that fits you based on it. from the Daemon Page:
"Currently, there are two common form finding methods, analytic and Pullman (symbolic), but the goal in both of them is to find a form that describes us best. The first system systematically analises animals' behaviours and interprets them into personality characteristics - for example, analytically, a nocturnal animal would fit a person who avoids attention. The other method focuses on cultural associations with a species, which means that a person with an owl form will be in some way connected to knowledge and wisdom. To be clear, a well-fitting form will describe not just one aspect, but most or, ideally, all of your personality or identity. Form finding is essentially a personality typing system along the same lines as Enneagram or MBTI, except the possible outcomes are almost as numerous as the number of animals on Earth."
how do i go about creating one? good news! you already have one! everyone does. you just have to find it! look into yourself: how do you naturally think? is it a fully fleshed monologue? is it a dialogue? is it a collection of images and concepts? is it flashes too fast and scattered for you to catch?
in the first two cases, finding your daemon will be easy: you just have to give your thoughts a name, imagine an animal saying them, and boom! there you have it, your daemon.
but if youre like me, it will be a little more tricky. you will have to pay very close attention to your thoughts, get used to repeat them more slowly, even if it feels pointless or forced at first. with time, hopefully it will feel more natural for you. but if that truly doesnt work for you, you can always try to find alternative ways of communication: writing, texting, drawing...
aaand thats it! if you want more information on the topic, i strongly recommend visiting the Daemon Page or the Daemon Forum; they explain the topic much more clearly than i do lol. have a good day!
You did good, no worries. I may have skipped over it by accident, but it's important to know some daemon forms are chosen by the daemon or daemian and do not have to come from any form-finding system.
Another resource on daemons is our website Daemonism 101
Another thing I'd tack onto this for info purposes (for anon's benefit!) is that daemonism is an incredibly diverse practice, and as a concept it can encompass so many different experiences. It's deeply personal!
The "animal companion as an embodiment of an aspect of your mind" kind of daemonism is what I've taken to calling a "conventional daemonism". That's the kind that has been most discussed and established in the community, especially after there was a push away from spiritual explanations (which was before I joined, so pre-2013 at least).
Not all daemians experience it like that, though. Sometimes folks meet their dae through ~conventional~ methods but then their daemon diverges from the established norm there. They might find their daemon has spiritual aspects, or that their daemon feels like an external guide taking a daemon role. Some daemians feel like their daemon is very literally an aspect or representation of their soul / higher self, or is a spirit bound to them (sometimes called a eudaemon iirc).
And other folks find that their daemon is actually less a part of their own self, and more a system member they weren't aware of yet (that's us!). Or their daemon might be another kind of mental presence that just doesn't quite fit into the "imaginary friend" version of the concept - or might grow into one over time, as they gain more autonomy and a sense of their own identity and personality.
And then there's other folks who already knew their daemon, and even if they don't match the conventional idea, they still feel like "daemon" is the best word for them!
Since daemonism is so personal and individual, having a different experience of it doesn't invalidate it or make it "not daemonism anymore". You get to choose that part! Sure, some folks might find "daemon" isn't the right word for their companion anymore - but that's not always the case. The community has a lot of members whose daemons don't fit the "conventional" concept, but are still daemons - and their person still a daemian. ^^
The way I personally define daemons are as a mental presence (whether thoughtform or otherwise) that is deeply and intrinsically connected to you, usually in a way that is uniquely affectionate and loving. Though ofc the shape that takes is varied - some daes are snarky tough love types! Some daes encourage you to confront difficult truths! And some dae/mians have a kind of sibling dynamic where the love can come in the form of being an annoying little menace COUGH COUGH Aka COUGH..
Daemons often act as a sidekick, advisor, guide, or similar. There's a concept of a "daemon role" which I see as, basically, them taking a supporting role for their daemian - their purpose is to support you and they are happy with that, it's what they want to do! Which is where even very separated and autonomous daemons differ from other types of headmate; they don't have their own goals and aspirations separate from their daemian. Your life is shared; your aspirations are also theirs! (This is one of the reasons Aka still identifies as a daemon. Ae loves being a sidekick!)
So I know daemonism falls under the created umbrella and I wanted to ask: can you have multiple daemons? Since it’s a personification of one’s subconscious and one only has one subconscious? Is it possible to have multiple daemons?
Hi! So unfortunately I do not know much to anything abot daemonism so anyone who has a daemon please answer this /nf ofc
Multiple daemons are definitely possible, and also not uncommon at all! Many daemians either have multiple daemons, or have experimented with it, or had multiple daemons in the past. It's a well-accepted and well-established experience. c:
Relevant here is that daemons are not necessarily a singular personification of a person's subconscious. Daemons can be many things; "daemon" is just as much a type of role or connection you can have with an internal presence / headmate as it is a "type" of headmate in itself.
Some peoples' daemons represent their subconscious. Some people might have one daemon who does and one who doesn't. And some peoples' daemons might be entirely unrelated to that concept. (It's a very freeform practice and concept!)
Even for folks whose daemon/s do represent their subconscious mind, a single daemon might only represent an aspect of it! Human minds are full of contradiction and messy feelings. Sometimes a daemian might find that they work best with two or three (or more!) daemons to represent different aspects of their subconscious. (This has been compared to internal family systems before and I think that's quite fitting!)
So, to give an intuitive example of how this can work: one daemon might represent their emotional self, while the other represents their rational self.
Actual experiences with multiple daemons are very varied though and don't necessarily fall into a recognisable archetype! Daemonism is very personal, because our minds (and what we need to navigate them) are all unique.
... I'm halfway through setting up a daemonism info blog, but in the meantime I'm very enthusiastic to answer questions about this stuff if anyone happens to have any!
I'm not trying to start discourse but very very very gentle reminder that daemonism is not inherently plural and acting like it is does a disservice to the community as a whole. it's a venn diagram with plurality, NOT a subsection.
this is not to discourage plural daemons and daemians from the community ofc, you're always welcome, but I'm getting a little sick of people considering this unique identity with it's own history and community as 'tulpmancy lite' or 'a fancy term for median system' or 'just another type of created plurality'.
if you experience daemonism as plurality that's genuinely awesome! :D But please be aware that daemonism is not plural for everyone and the assumption that it is can come off as rude or exclusionary to your singlet community members is all.
#daemonism#ngl i feel like the alterhuman community has no clue what daemonism is#which tbf is likely because the daemian community keeps to our own spaces a lot and there isn't many resources#but it is very... bold... how many people will confidently give incorrect or incomplete descriptions of it#despite never having engaged with the community#if someone's not part of the community then it's not their place to talk about what it is y'know?#but i think that's where the bulk of these misconceptions come from#some daemonism is plural but daemonism is and always has been its own practice first and foremost#with its own culture and decades of history!
this is kinda what inspired me to make this post actually, the amount of plurality blogs that will confidently spread misinformation on daemonism because they know jack shit about it and assume it's "basically a median system" is INCREDIBLY frustrating 😭
I have no clue what daemonism is so I'm just going to say that my opinion is "I have never heard of it, do you have any text-based resources I can read?"
The tags quoted earlier were mine. c: This convo prompted me to actually set up this sideblog and do something with it, heh!
The lack of daemonism resources is very real. 95% of daemian knowledge is purely word of mouth. There's very little in the way of things you can just go out and read about it, and I think that's a big part of the problem here. There's basic resources but not much more, and of those, TDP is the most referred to but also sorely outdated by now (communities grow and change a lot over a span of decades)!
It's a problem I've wanted to try and solve, to whatever extent I can, but it kept being sidelined by other projects (I am very distractible). But I guess whatever I throw here will be better than nothing!
Can't imagine this blog will be frequently active cause we mainly intend to use it for dropping info posts and maybe personal reflections every now and then, but we're also very, very happy to answer daemonism questions always and forever!
I'd like to write some resources specifically for tumblr, but that'll take time. For now, I'm going to post the info I originally wrote for The Daemon Forum's discord server! It should work well enough as an introduction to the practice. ^u^
The dæmonism community has existed for over two decades, but through all that time has remained consistently niche and obscure. That means that finding information can be pretty tough outside of dæmian* circles.
The greatest amount of information can be found on The Dæmon Forum itself, and that would be a good next stop for anyone wanting to learn more!
*Dæmian: a person who practices dæmonism
**Daemon, daemonism, and so on, can be written with or without the æ symbol
What is dæmonism?
There are two different aspects of the practice of dæmonism. A person could choose to participate in both, or only one or the other.
One aspect involves finding, or creating, a dæmon, and learning to communicate with them. Then, bonding with them, getting to know them, and letting them be part of your daily life in whatever ways appeal to you.
The other aspect is form-finding, which involves finding dæmon forms which represent you in some way. These forms are often animals, and may align with a form-finding system or be wholly personal.
Overall, dæmonism is… somewhere between an introspective practice encouraging self-awareness and acceptance, and a fun, often silly hobby where you talk to yourself and get too invested in figuring out “which animal are you?”
What is a dæmon?
A dæmon is a kind of non-physical, mental companion. Dæmons have a very deep, close connection with their dæmian – their person. Beyond that, dæmons are almost infinitely diverse, and their natures are individual and personal.
Some dæmons are intentionally-created thoughtforms. Some are natural aspects of a person’s mindscape – a part of their thought processes or mental chatter, given a name and form. Some are spiritual companions or guides. But dæmons are not at all limited to these options; they are as diverse as the mind itself.
Many dæmons take animal forms, but that’s optional. The most defining part of a dæmon is their connection and bond with their person.
Can anyone have a dæmon?
Hypothetically: yes!
Some people have dæmons “from the start”. Either they have a mental companion who already fills the dæmon role, or they search for their dæmon and find one pops up of their own accord.
Others have to work to find or create their dæmon. How easy it is seems to simply depend on how a person’s mind works. For some people, the amount of effort involved in creating, or locating their dæmon might mean it doesn’t feel like a worthwhile use of their time – that’s valid! We’re all different, after all.
In my experience, however, that is very rare. Most people can indeed have a dæmon!
How do I find my dæmon?
There’s a lot of different approaches to finding your dæmon, and no “one size fits all” trick to it.
For someone just starting out – the first thing I’d suggest, though it will definitely feel a bit silly, is just to ask in your thoughts if there is a dæmon there. “Listen” for thoughts that feel like they reply, or contrast with your own.
… You’d be surprised how often that works.
There’s plenty of more involved methods to try if your dæmon isn’t quite so eager to make themself known! The community can give advice on this, and direct you to more thorough resources.
Can I have more than one dæmon?
Traditionally it has sometimes been said that one person can only have one dæmon. TDF’s community nowadays doesn’t hold to this – instead, the approach is that people can have as many dæmons as feels right for them.
A lower number of dæmons is most common; one or two is roughly “the norm”. But that is not a limit, and it’s not wrong to have many daemons.
Sometimes people have “temporary dæmons” that help with specific situations. Sometimes dæmons can come and go, or change fluidly over time.
There’s no “correct” number of dæmons. It’s purely what works best for you, and what feels most natural to your mind!
Can my dæmon be a (human / character / object / etc.)?
Yes!
Dæmons conventionally take animal forms. This is in large part because of the community’s roots in the fan community of His Dark Materials, which is also where a lot of our terminology (including the word dæmon) originates!
In His Dark Materials, human characters have dæmons, which are physical embodiments of their souls in animal form. The animal form of a dæmon represents the nature of their human.
Many people find their way to dæmonism via His Dark Materials, and many more of us are simply animal nerds. As such, animal forms are common for dæmons in the community – but it’s not a “rule” you need to follow! If you or your dæmon don’t like animal forms, that is not a problem at all.
A person with a human dæmon, or a dæmon that takes the form of inanimate objects, or a dæmon in the form of a fictional character, are all welcome in the community (and indeed we’ve seen all of those and more throughout our time here)!
Is this presence in my mind a dæmon?
Only you (and your mind companion) can answer that one, I’m afraid! Figuring it out might take time, but learning about dæmons can help for comparison.
The term dæmon is very inclusive, and all sorts of “brain buddies” use the label. Sometimes, the question of whether a mind presence is a dæmon or not purely comes down to – do you want them to be? Do they want to be? If yes on both counts: you have your answer!
What’s the difference between a dæmon and a tulpa?
The communities of dæmonism and tulpamancy arose separately, and remain mostly separate now. There are some overlaps between the two, for sure, but there are differences as well. It would be considered inappropriate to refer to a dæmon as a tulpa, or vice versa.
It's worth noting that dæmonism is not an "offshoot" or "based on" tulpamancy. The first dæmian communities actually predate the first discussions of tulpamancy by about a decade! The similarities between the two are, functionally, coincidental. The dæmian community has always mostly kept to itself, and even its interchange with the alterhuman community (and the separate communities within it, like the therian and otherkin communities) have been relatively minimal.
Perhaps the biggest difference, then, between dæmonism and tulpamancy, is that they are different communities with different cultures and different histories!
On a more practical level, there is one difference which seems to broadly exist between dæmons and tulpas: the intention behind their creation (or, as may be the case for dæmons, their discovery).
Dæmons usually fill the role of a sidekick. They are advisors, supporters, or cheerleaders for their dæmian – taking the role of the supporting character where their dæmian is the protagonist. Dæmons don’t typically have goals or desires separate from their dæmian.
Dæmons are companions first and foremost; they will usually end up as complex and autonomous as best fits that role for their individual dæmian. That means that dæmons can be anything from imaginary friends here for fun or inspiration, to independent individuals with their own identities, traits and opinions. Both can fit equally within the definition of “dæmon”!
Unlike with tulpas, autonomy or independence isn’t much of a goal in itself within dæmonism. The community doesn’t put much focus on trying to separate our dæmons from ourselves. Instead, a dæmian and their dæmon will often, over time, settle into a point of separation and autonomy that feels most comfortable for them. For some this might mean a dæmon is relatively unseparated; for others, their dæmon might come to be a full-fledged headmate in their own right, while also being a dæmon.
The connection between dæmon and dæmian is a core, central pillar of the practice of dæmonism. Generally, trying to encourage everyone to strive for independence and separation (as is conventionally an end goal for tulpas) would run counter to the purpose and nature of dæmonism.
Is dæmonism plural?
Dæmonism can be plural, but – from what I’ve seen – most dæmians don’t consider themselves plural for having dæmon/s. Individuals may have their own reasons to use, or not use, the plural label.
Folks who are part of larger plural or multiple systems can practice dæmonism, and have dæmons, either individually or collectively. Systems may or may not consider their dæmons to be an aspect of their plurality or multiplicity.
The dæmian community is sometimes considered “plural-adjacent”. There are known similarities, but the communities arose separately and have different cultures and histories.
One thing to note is that the practice of listening to your thoughts, and the approach of open-minded self-awareness, can lead some people who practice dæmonism to discover that they are part of a system. That’s probably one reason you’ll find the dæmonism community has many plural and multiple members!
Wait, so it isn't about [demonology / occultism / computer programming / blond Matt Smith / etc.]?
