We are a resource blog dedicated to daemons and the daemon community.
Daemons
The personification of the second half of someone’s mental dialogue or subconscious, and is the manifestation of their soul/ inner-self commonly represented through animal form.

Introduction (wip)
Terminology
Companion website: Daemonism101
There are many varying experiences and labels you will see amongst the daemon community, including members who do not have a daemon but are still closely tied to the form finding process. There is no single "right" way to be a daemian.
Daemonism is not inherently alterhuman, plural, or polyminded. These are opt-in labels, with each having their own respective communities and histories. They can overlap, but daemonism was not intended to be seen as a subcategory of these experiences.
We are not related to demonology or House of Dragons. 😭

Daemon Application
Working Name "DaemonKeep"
Coding through Flutterflow (avoiding generative AI features as best as possible)
So, my daemon community, how would we all feel about a useable app to track daemon stuff? The tags are just filler at the moment, so imagine they work with the categories they are in lol. I am not a coder, I am relying on the visual assistance that FlutterFlow provides and while I am hoping I can manage some modifications, I am not looking to create anything super elaborate. Being the only person so far working on this I'm hoping I can create something and release it onto you all and never have to worry about it again. XD
Things I would like
Slow Bilateral Stimulation (BLS) with your daemon for emotional regulation.
This is to be used as a grounding support tool only. Use this when you feel in distress, or when you want to connect with a sense of calm, safety, or inner strength. Do not use this to try and process trauma on your own.
Bilateral Stimulation is meant to activate the left and right side of your brain in a repetitive pattern. You can do this using
Tapping
Listening to bilateral audio
If tapping, it is best to keep it to the same area of your body. Right knee then left knee, or right collarbone then left collarbone as an example.
More information on EMDR as a support tool: Link
1. Reach out to your daemon.
2. Feel their presence in your body. Do they feel protective, supportive, or nurturing in this moment? Focus on that quality and let it move through you.
Perform set of slow BLS.
3. Focus on them as strongly as you can. What do you see? What are they doing? How do they smell? How do they feel?
Perform set of slow BLS
4. How do you feel? How are they making you feel about yourself? What are you noticing in your thoughts and feelings when you’re in their presence?
Perform set of slow BLS
5. Is there anything they are trying to tell you? If words are difficult or the message is causing distress, it is okay to sit in silence with them.
Perform set of slow BLS
6. Continue to focus on your daemon until the distress is noticeably reduced or you feel grounded enough to safely disconnect with them.
Perform set of slow BLS and repeat the steps that produced the most positive reaction until desired result is reached. End with one last set of slow BLS.
I am doing some more in depth information and resources about the word "daemon" and I want to include how it is used in Hellenism and current day spiritual practices. Because some daemians do have eudaemons so it would be nice to make that information available. I also want to dive into demonology too to provide a similar informative post.
But
They are their own things with potentially soooo much to speak about. I am doing my best to keep the post I'm making not too long, and allow myself later to deep dive into that information.
And why am I branching off to talk about unrelated practices? Because who doesn't like going down a rabbit hole to learn about random, but semi related things???

Beliefs about daemons that are often considered old-fashioned, canon compliant, or "classic". (ex. Daemon's gender is the opposite of yours, settled daemons no longer change form, only having one daemon, and no human forms)
Modern
Challenges the original canon framework. (ex. can have same gender daemons, multiple daemons, human forms, and never settle, or form doesn't have to reflect the daemian.)
[Waves]
Waves (or progression of daemonism) created by @ Saewin. Please see the original post here for more information. Please, it's really good.
Keep in mind, while the community is currently in Wave 3, you may follow any of these for yourself and still be considered a valid daemian.
Note: These are not really used within the community, but I think it would be fun if we did.
Wave 1: Canonical
"The books define it" - Follows closely to canon rules and beliefs about daemons from HDM. More spiritual connections and beliefs.
Wave 2: Prescriptivist
"We define it" - More prominant belief that daemons are a mental construct instead of spiritual in nature. Further removed from HDM canon.
Wave 3: Post-modernist
"I define it" - Restrictions on what defines a daemon has been decreased and classic rules are now seen more often as guidelines. Other types of headmates can call themselves a daemon if they feel the role fits.

Basics | Daemon Specific | Form Basics | Form Specifics | Form Types | Form Finding | Pronouns | Daenominations
When your daemon still changes shape regularly and/or your personality is not stable enough to find a singular fitting form.
Stable
Your daemon has taken one form for an extended period of time and/or you have found a singular form that fits, but you may not consider your personality set in stone. Commonly used over "settled" by daemians who believe the self/personality may change multiple times throughout life.
Settled
Your personality has become stable enough to find a singular fitting form and/or your daemon no longer changes shape. At this point your core personality/self is considered set and unlikely to change.
Settledom
The state of being settled.
Settled-unknown
When your personality is settled but you don't know your fitting form.
False Settling
When you decide you were wrong about being settled or what form your daemon settled as.
SFday
"Settled Form day" - the day you declared settledom and/or found your fitting form.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Basics | Daemon Specific | Form Basics | Form Specifics | Form Types | Form Finding | Pronouns | Daenominations
Used to identify a daemian with their fitting form. (ex. tiger-soul for someome with a tiger settled form)
Form Finding
The process of finding your fitting form.
OTF
"One True Form" - When a form fits the daemian perfectly in every aspect, without any doubt, no other forms can come close, was "destined" to be the one, etc. It is our own playful version of "OTP"(One true pairing)
OTOF
"One True Other Form" - What someone's settled form would be if their current form was not included. Some daemians also enjoy finding the equivalent of their form in different species. (Ex. The bird equivalent of a coyote)
Viable form
The belief that not all animals can by analyzed accurately for interpretation within the form finding systems due to lack of information on the animal. Or, the aninal in question may be too intelligent with unique personalities and unique cultural influences. Many feel this would be the equivalent of trying to interpret humans into a form analysis. Too many variables in behavior to be reliable.
Viability of forms is a common debate, and not everyone may agree on what animal counts or not. But, what may not be viable in one form finding system may be viable in another. (ex. mythical creatures are not cosidered valid for traditional analysis, but are viable in the symbolic or Pullman system.)
"Coming Into Existence day" - The day you discovered your daemon.
Projection
Seeing your daemon by imagining them overlaid in your surroundings.
Unseparated
Someone who has not manifested their daemon, or a daemon who has become inactive.
Crisis
A period of uncertainty about a previously consistent trait about your daemon. Ex. "form crisis", "name crisis", "gender crisis".
Mental Construct/ Thoughtform
An entity created by the mind, whether unconsciously or consciously.
Fauxtonomy
A combination of the words "faux" and "autonomy". Used by some daemians to help describe how daemons appear autonomous, while simultaneously being influenced by their daemian.
Basics | Daemon Specific | Form Basics | Form Specifics | Form Types | Form Finding | Pronouns | Daenominations
Semi-plural pronouns originating for daemons. Adding an "i" at the end of a pronoun was how it started, but it does not always flow well with existing pronouns. So, it is often used in combination with standard pronouns.
(ex. "Hei really loves his new form. Wei think it fits us both well, and I think it is cute, but I won't tell him that.")
*Semi-plural daemon pronouns have fallen out of common use within the community, with traditional and neopronouns being more common.
[Original Pronouns]
Hei
Equivalent of "he". Used in combination with him/his/himself
Shei
Equivalent of "She". Used in combination with her/hers/herself
Wei
Used when referring to yourself and your daemon. Replaces "we". Used in combination with us/ours/ourselves
[Expanded Pronouns]
(A demonstration on how to adapt existing pronouns to semi-plural daemon pronouns.)
Hei/Heim/Heis/Heimself
Equivalent of he/him/his/himself
Shei/Heir/Heirs/Heirself
Equivalent of she/her/hers/herself
Thei/Theim/Theirs/Theimself
Equivalent of they/them/theirs/themself
Vei/Veir/Veirs/Veirself
Equivalent of ve/ver/vers/verself
Xei/ Xeim/ Xeirs / Xeimself
Equivalent of xe/xem/xers/xemself
Zei/ Zeim/ Zeirs/ Zeirself
Equivalent of ze/zem/zers/zerself
Successfully migrated this blog to our more active account.
Almost have the new intro pinned post done.
Discovered I had TWO hidden asks for this blog that was sent in at the start of 2025. ;_; I am so sorry, I have no idea why they only now just appeared after the migration.
Four points representing the most common settled form types: Analytic, Symbolic, Pullman, and Personal.
Inner ring represents unsettled daemons.
"æ" symbol represents the daemian community and the infinite bond between person and daemon.
Combined, the design is meant to look like a compass, in honor of the alethiometer.
Colors:
The Blue stripe represents the Northern Lights/Golden Compass and La Belle Sauvage
The Red stripe represents the Subtle Knife and the Secret Commonwealth
The Gold stripe represents the Amber Spyglass and the Rose Field
I'm not usually into flag making, and I know not everyone wants a flag in the community. But I figured a little more whimsy never hurt. There is another flag or two that exist already, but I wanted to try my hand at one too. I'm rather pleased with it. I hope some of you may like it too!
One thing I think is important for understanding the daemian community – especially if you're coming from an alterhuman perspective – is that daemonism is not a word for a shared experience, nor a shared identity.
Daemonism is a practice. The concept of it can be used by anyone: alterhuman or not, plural or not. It can be pure playfulness. It can be imaginary, and that's okay! That's a beautiful experience in its own respect!
There's no universal daemian experience because we accept and embrace that our minds, and our experiences, are ours alone.
The community isn't built on a shared experience – just a shared idea which we all create unique versions of.
Some people stick closer to the basic idea we started with. Some just take what they like from it and throw out the rest. Some only take vague inspiration from it. Some people adapt it more than others, sometimes due to being neurodivergent, plural, and/or alterhuman.
It's still daemonism because daemonism isn't defined by us all "doing the same thing" or "having the same experience".
Daemonism is, for the most part, defined by a person deciding that they want to call what they are doing or experiencing daemonism.
And a large part of that is often in connection to the community, whether directly or in a peripheral way, by taking inspiration from the practice, making use of the community's writings, and so on.
This is why I think daemonism is often misunderstood in an alterhuman context. Daemonism is not an experience, it's not an identity – it's just an idea we each take and make our own. And that's what it should be. That's the beauty of it!
Anyone could be a daemian if they want to. There's no requirements. A lot of people get started with daemonism purely because it sounds fun! A lot of people start with only their imagination, and many people remain so.
For others, it might become something else in time, or they might discover there was something underlying their imaginings all along. It's no more or less a practice of daemonism, either way.
A lot of alterhuman concepts don't apply to daemonism because of this. Fact is, there's plenty of daemians who are orthohumans too, and plenty of people who specifically see their daemonism as an orthohuman practice.
I see it get included under the alterhuman umbrella a lot, and I feel like it gives the wrong first impression to come at it from that angle by default.
Really, it's more comparable with being a furry. For some people, it is a deep, impactful, life-altering experience, and the people who feel that way are a vital part of the community. But equally, for some it is an exercise in whimsy, playfulness, or creativity – and those people are no less members of the community for it.
We're not united by being plural, or having thoughtforms, or being alterhuman. We're united by being a bunch of people who were inspired by some books (or a film or TV show) to play around with the idea of daemons, and ended up sticking with it for one reason or another.
While the individual experience can be very deep indeed, that isn't what makes daemonism what it is.
not sure where else to ask but is it rude/weird to contact your daemon with the express purpose of getting help with self esteem/self compassion issues or would that be considered rude? I'm just worried about hurting his feelings or committing a social faux pax is all
Absolutely not! In fact that kind of reassurance is a huge part of why a lot of people develop them for the purposes of improving their mental health. It's kind of like ... an extended form of an affirmation, in my mind.
Tbh there aren't really any social faux pas that I can think of within the community because each daemon-daemian relationship is SO unique. If it helps you, then go for it! If it feels weird, perhaps talking to your daemon about why it doesn't feel quite right might help you figure out why as well :)
I'd like to write some resources specifically for tumblr, but that'll take time. For now, I'm going to post the info I originally wrote for The Daemon Forum's discord server! It should work well enough as an introduction to the practice. ^u^
The dæmonism community has existed for over two decades, but through all that time has remained consistently niche and obscure. That means that finding information can be pretty tough outside of dæmian* circles.
The greatest amount of information can be found on The Dæmon Forum itself, and that would be a good next stop for anyone wanting to learn more!
*Dæmian: a person who practices dæmonism
**Daemon, daemonism, and so on, can be written with or without the æ symbol
What is dæmonism?
There are two different aspects of the practice of dæmonism. A person could choose to participate in both, or only one or the other.
One aspect involves finding, or creating, a dæmon, and learning to communicate with them. Then, bonding with them, getting to know them, and letting them be part of your daily life in whatever ways appeal to you.
The other aspect is form-finding, which involves finding dæmon forms which represent you in some way. These forms are often animals, and may align with a form-finding system or be wholly personal.
Overall, dæmonism is… somewhere between an introspective practice encouraging self-awareness and acceptance, and a fun, often silly hobby where you talk to yourself and get too invested in figuring out “which animal are you?”
What is a dæmon?
A dæmon is a kind of non-physical, mental companion. Dæmons have a very deep, close connection with their dæmian – their person. Beyond that, dæmons are almost infinitely diverse, and their natures are individual and personal.
Some dæmons are intentionally-created thoughtforms. Some are natural aspects of a person’s mindscape – a part of their thought processes or mental chatter, given a name and form. Some are spiritual companions or guides. But dæmons are not at all limited to these options; they are as diverse as the mind itself.
Many dæmons take animal forms, but that’s optional. The most defining part of a dæmon is their connection and bond with their person.
Can anyone have a dæmon?
Hypothetically: yes!
Some people have dæmons “from the start”. Either they have a mental companion who already fills the dæmon role, or they search for their dæmon and find one pops up of their own accord.
Others have to work to find or create their dæmon. How easy it is seems to simply depend on how a person’s mind works. For some people, the amount of effort involved in creating, or locating their dæmon might mean it doesn’t feel like a worthwhile use of their time – that’s valid! We’re all different, after all.
In my experience, however, that is very rare. Most people can indeed have a dæmon!
How do I find my dæmon?
There’s a lot of different approaches to finding your dæmon, and no “one size fits all” trick to it.
For someone just starting out – the first thing I’d suggest, though it will definitely feel a bit silly, is just to ask in your thoughts if there is a dæmon there. “Listen” for thoughts that feel like they reply, or contrast with your own.
… You’d be surprised how often that works.
There’s plenty of more involved methods to try if your dæmon isn’t quite so eager to make themself known! The community can give advice on this, and direct you to more thorough resources.
Can I have more than one dæmon?
Traditionally it has sometimes been said that one person can only have one dæmon. TDF’s community nowadays doesn’t hold to this – instead, the approach is that people can have as many dæmons as feels right for them.
A lower number of dæmons is most common; one or two is roughly “the norm”. But that is not a limit, and it’s not wrong to have many daemons.
Sometimes people have “temporary dæmons” that help with specific situations. Sometimes dæmons can come and go, or change fluidly over time.
There’s no “correct” number of dæmons. It’s purely what works best for you, and what feels most natural to your mind!
Can my dæmon be a (human / character / object / etc.)?
Yes!
Dæmons conventionally take animal forms. This is in large part because of the community’s roots in the fan community of His Dark Materials, which is also where a lot of our terminology (including the word dæmon) originates!
In His Dark Materials, human characters have dæmons, which are physical embodiments of their souls in animal form. The animal form of a dæmon represents the nature of their human.
Many people find their way to dæmonism via His Dark Materials, and many more of us are simply animal nerds. As such, animal forms are common for dæmons in the community – but it’s not a “rule” you need to follow! If you or your dæmon don’t like animal forms, that is not a problem at all.
A person with a human dæmon, or a dæmon that takes the form of inanimate objects, or a dæmon in the form of a fictional character, are all welcome in the community (and indeed we’ve seen all of those and more throughout our time here)!
Is this presence in my mind a dæmon?
Only you (and your mind companion) can answer that one, I’m afraid! Figuring it out might take time, but learning about dæmons can help for comparison.
The term dæmon is very inclusive, and all sorts of “brain buddies” use the label. Sometimes, the question of whether a mind presence is a dæmon or not purely comes down to – do you want them to be? Do they want to be? If yes on both counts: you have your answer!
What’s the difference between a dæmon and a tulpa?
The communities of dæmonism and tulpamancy arose separately, and remain mostly separate now. There are some overlaps between the two, for sure, but there are differences as well. It would be considered inappropriate to refer to a dæmon as a tulpa, or vice versa.
It's worth noting that dæmonism is not an "offshoot" or "based on" tulpamancy. The first dæmian communities actually predate the first discussions of tulpamancy by about a decade! The similarities between the two are, functionally, coincidental. The dæmian community has always mostly kept to itself, and even its interchange with the alterhuman community (and the separate communities within it, like the therian and otherkin communities) have been relatively minimal.
Perhaps the biggest difference, then, between dæmonism and tulpamancy, is that they are different communities with different cultures and different histories!
On a more practical level, there is one difference which seems to broadly exist between dæmons and tulpas: the intention behind their creation (or, as may be the case for dæmons, their discovery).
Dæmons usually fill the role of a sidekick. They are advisors, supporters, or cheerleaders for their dæmian – taking the role of the supporting character where their dæmian is the protagonist. Dæmons don’t typically have goals or desires separate from their dæmian.
Dæmons are companions first and foremost; they will usually end up as complex and autonomous as best fits that role for their individual dæmian. That means that dæmons can be anything from imaginary friends here for fun or inspiration, to independent individuals with their own identities, traits and opinions. Both can fit equally within the definition of “dæmon”!
Unlike with tulpas, autonomy or independence isn’t much of a goal in itself within dæmonism. The community doesn’t put much focus on trying to separate our dæmons from ourselves. Instead, a dæmian and their dæmon will often, over time, settle into a point of separation and autonomy that feels most comfortable for them. For some this might mean a dæmon is relatively unseparated; for others, their dæmon might come to be a full-fledged headmate in their own right, while also being a dæmon.
The connection between dæmon and dæmian is a core, central pillar of the practice of dæmonism. Generally, trying to encourage everyone to strive for independence and separation (as is conventionally an end goal for tulpas) would run counter to the purpose and nature of dæmonism.
Is dæmonism plural?
Dæmonism can be plural, but – from what I’ve seen – most dæmians don’t consider themselves plural for having dæmon/s. Individuals may have their own reasons to use, or not use, the plural label.
Folks who are part of larger plural or multiple systems can practice dæmonism, and have dæmons, either individually or collectively. Systems may or may not consider their dæmons to be an aspect of their plurality or multiplicity.
The dæmian community is sometimes considered “plural-adjacent”. There are known similarities, but the communities arose separately and have different cultures and histories.
One thing to note is that the practice of listening to your thoughts, and the approach of open-minded self-awareness, can lead some people who practice dæmonism to discover that they are part of a system. That’s probably one reason you’ll find the dæmonism community has many plural and multiple members!
Wait, so it isn't about [demonology / occultism / computer programming / blond Matt Smith / etc.]?
