The Weeping Angels are really scary until you realize if any organism sees them they are fucked so they get hard countered by geckos, who don't blink and can see in the dark. If the Doctor strapped like two geckos onto him he'd be fine.

Here's what I want. I wanna go back in time to before cigarette lighters were invented. Before cigarettes were invented. I wanna find a guy trying to start a fire and be like "Hey check this gadget out." I wanna see if he instinctively puts it in his pocket instead of giving it back to me.
one fun thing about being a teacher in march 2023 is that chess is a literal epidemic among teens. we are starting to have meetings about how we can STOP teenagers from playing too much chess which is like if we were trying to figure out how to stop them from reading for fun. When i was in high school five years ago chess was nerd shit only but now it is transcending every social and language barrier and is absolutely rampant. kids arenât on their phone texting in class anymore itâs ONLY chess.com. kids are playing chess on their phones while playing chess in real life. this is still better than tiktok because at least the kids are developing an attention span from this
the worst part of this is that theyâre on chess dot com instead of getting an education. but the BEST part of this is watching high schoolers develop the weirdest goddamn strategies Iâve ever seen. One of my students invented something he calls the âevil advisor gambitâ where he gets a third person to give out constant terrible advice to both teams hoping that his opponent falls for it straight-up or that his opponent thinks HE fell for it and will act accordingly thus worsening their own strategy. he has won every game he has been able to pull off a coordinated evil advisor gambit in. this is chess innovation never before seen in its 700 years on earth
I feel like we always see parents who are 100% super supportive allies, or parents who are horrible and cruel.  At least in media or in the most popular stories.  But I feel like that ignores just how many people have parents where you just have no idea?  And even if you think theyâll accept you on a surface level, you donât know if they have a breaking point.  Especially if you need to go on hrt, or request they change the way they think about and refer to you.  Sure theyâre liberal and all, or centrists, or âtolerantâ, but how far does that stretch?
I think most closeted LGBT+ kids live like this, wading around in the grey area. Â Iâd like it of more of us knew that was normal, Iâd like if we talked about it more.
We really, really donât acknowledge the banal, disappointing reactions, and what those can do. When my husband came out to my MIL, her reaction was âCan I take some time to think about this?â and then she never, ever spoke about it again.
My MIL is not an awful person. Sheâs a loving mother who carries emotional scars from having been in an abusive relationship with her minister husband for a long time, which has left her with a disabling preoccupation with âWhat might the neighbours sayâ in her life, and that often means she makes poor choices without realising it. She loves my husband no less; she didnât withdraw love and affection from him, didnât cut him off.
But she chose to pretend it wasnât happening, and that sent him into a hefty shame spiral we had to work through. A few months later, a stand up routine he did about being bisexual was doing the rounds on Facebook, and despite normally sharing every single routine of his, she rang him to tell him she wouldnât be sharing that one because âYour brotherâs wedding is coming up, and I donât want it overshadowed by people talking about you and your news.â
And again, this is not because she rejects him. Thatâs an easy narrative, and certainly the one youâd assume from the outside. But that, in her own way, was her attempt to protect both her children from negative scrutiny - she truly thought that people would care, and would care enough to make a scene at the wedding, and that would hurt the two of them.
Everyone already knew. Heâs a celebrity in his culture. No one cared. But, that was my MILâs fear.
And the message it sent, intentionally or not, was âThis is something shameful.â
Sheâs come to terms with it now. But she totally missed her âI love and support you no matter who you areâ chance, and left him with a lingering issue. And thatâs the sort of story we never see in queer media.
WOW.
I could write a whole essay, a whole book about this experience in my family, but I wonât. It feels ungrateful to criticize the actions of people who still say they love you, and have never hurt you and will never hurt you in the big dramatic ways we see in the media. But in my case, and I think in many, it isnât a clean, decisive cut.Â
Itâs a love that feels lesser. An acceptance with strings attached. And that hurts in a quieter way, but it still leaves marks.

if you are distressed about not receiving a response from someone you'd like to be actively talking to, you have to take a moment. step back from the conversation, put yourself in their shoes. perhaps they're busy with something right now. you have to consider the possibility that maybe they hanging upside down by their ankle. everybody has their own schedule, and sometimes people spend time away from their phone or computer because they are currently suspended from a tree branch by a rope tied around their ankle that they unnoticingly stepped in because it was concealed by a pile of leafs. it's not that they don't want to respond; imagine that they can see their phone screen on the ground below but it's a good few inches out of reach and even if they bounce and flail on the branch their fingertips just can't touch it. sometimes life gets in the way

I bought this wonderful hand dyed yarn last month, and have finally gotten around to knitting with it. It's called oilslick, but I think it also looks like the iridescence of a pigeon. 4ply silk/merino by happy go knitty. I could only afford 1 skein though, if I had 2 I think I'd use it in a bird themed colourwork something.
