Later, dude climbs aboard a SHIPWRECK that's caught in a WHIRLPOOL so that he can RAM IT into a 150-foot-tall MAGIC SEA MONSTER in order to save her.

Ariel didn't need the man until Ursula made her need the man. Ariel wanted the land and the sun and the bipedal locomotion, and Eric was only a bonus.

But notable in this is that Ursula is the one who, in her sales pitch, throws a lot of keywords and cliche gender-related gaslighting at Ariel that, notably, make more sense to the audience than they do within Ariel's cultural frame of reference. (Probably part of why she misses the red flags lol.) The 'body language' insinuation, the whole spiel about how men don't want to hear what you have to say anyway so what do you need a voice for? That's some classic bullshit.

This is a character who in the same scene insists that she's actually helping everyone she defrauds; she has a vested interest in preemptively painting Ariel as a self-destroying bimbo.
