we celebrated with my wife’s family this year. her brother’s new girlfriend is one of the most unpleasant people i’ve ever met. she’s like a groyper twitter user’s stereotype of a social justice warrior, and this is coming from someone who has TA’d and taught college students before. just an usually potent expression of that personality type who is impossible to have a conversation with. flew off the handle whenever someone made a joke with any more edge than “why did the chicken cross the road?”, including self-deprecating ones. eg, wife and i making dumb lesbian jokes about our own relationship.

she also told me that she thought my field was a waste of resources when climate change exists which is… much more offensive than anything that was said by anyone else. who died and made you the arbiter of what is and isn’t a bullshit job?

i wish i could tell her and people like her that they are not the first generation to discover kindness, or ethics, or whatever they think is being accomplished here. moral superiority can never last forever. in ten or fifteen years time, you'll also have a 23 year old idiot screaming at you over a transgression that you can’t comprehend. don’t act so mighty. time makes fools of us all. same with me. same with anyone reading.

It is 2.9×4.3 meters large. That’s 9'4"×14'1" for people in other measurement systems. It’s HUGE. There are artists out there that spend years on paintings much smaller than this. He was not one of them.

He also didn’t only paint the sea, but he MOSTLY painted the sea. Very few people could draw light filtering through waves the way this guy did and apparently it was tied into his layering technique that allowed him to paint so goddamn fast.
