“...-You’re not even really one of us!”

Virgil’s eyes widened in shock as he stared at Roman in disbelief. The two had been fighting before the sentence had been through his way into the argument. The younger side couldn’t even remember why, but it had turned from calm disagreeing to harsh retorts from both ends. Thomas and Patton stared in horror and shock at Roman. Even Logan showed some visible surprise on his face.

“You’re... You’re just... You’re just a dark side, pretending to be a light side. A wolf in sheep’s clothing...” Roman huffed, staring at the ground with cold, hard eyes and fingers curled into the palms of his hands to make fists. “You...-“

“-So what you really think finally comes out?” Virgil said in a voice that was barely audible, making Roman almost immediately snap out of his angered state and look to the other side with a slightly horrified face as he realized just what he had said. He struggled to keep tears from falling down his pale face and ruining his black eyeshadow as he stared at the ground in front of him. “Heh, I knew it. I.. I knew that you didn’t see me as one of you guys still. That none of you do. I knew it.”

Patton stepped towards the youngest side, reaching out to his dark son. “...Kiddo—“

“—No, no it’s fine, Patton. You know why? Because I’m not even surprised. I’ll never be to the standards of a.. what do you guys call yourselves? ‘Light sides?’ It’s okay. I’ll accept that eventually.” Virgil humorlessly laughed, shaking his head as he sunk down before anyone could get the chance to say anything else. “That I’ll never be one of you guys.”

As Virgil rose back up in his room, he finally let the tears he oh so needed to cry flow down his cheeks, doing his best to keep his eyeshadow from getting smudged. He wished he could say he was mad at Roman, but honestly? He wasn’t. It was about time he faced the brutal truth that was his place in the group. And that was, he was needed, but he wasn’t wanted. Perhaps that’s why they had pretended to accept him. Was he now the bad guy again? Maybe he’s always been. Maybe he’ll always be.

He couldn’t believe he’d let himself be played for a fool by all four of them. He couldn’t believe he’d let himself believe or trust them. Now that he was standing in his dim lighted room, sobbing, he could see how idiotic he had been to let them in and even learn his name. They had only been acting that they now accepted him because they didn’t want him to drop out again and turn Thomas into the mess he was when he had. How was he only seeing that now? Was he really that blind? That oblivious?

The anxious side wanted nothing more than to fall to the ground and wither away at that moment, but he didn’t get the chance to do that. Instead, he felt a hand on his shoulder, and when he surprisedly looked up to see who it was, he found the last side he had expected to see.

“Deceit? Why are you—?”

“—Here?” Deceit suggested with a smile that Virgil couldn’t quite tell was friendly or not. “I totally didn’t overhear the simply amazing conversation you weren’t having with Roman, and I absolutely didn’t come here to make sure you were alright.”

The slightly shorter side rolled his mismatched eyes, giving an exasperated huff of disbelief, crossing his arms lazily. “Heh, fat chance. I know you’re still upset with me for leaving you and the others.” He snapped. The side shook his head, trying his best to keep his composure and get rid of felt over anger he had from his fight with Roman. “Listen, I can’t do this right now, and I really don’t feel like doing it either. So whatever you want, just spit it out.” Deceit sighed. “Alright, alright.” He murmured. “Come back to us.”

“What?!”

“Come back.” He repeated with a small twisted smile. “Those ‘Light’ sides don’t care about you. Do you really think they don’t see you as a villain anymore? They only keep you around because you’re needed, not because you’re wanted.” At the darker side’s a shocked expression, he smirked. “I know it, they know it, and I can tell you know it as well. You’re nothing to them. If you come back to us, you’ll be welcomed, feared. Thomas will have to listen to and value you.” He held out a hand to the side as if to shake hands. “Join us, and come back home, Virgil.”

Virgil had to admit... He was tempted to. Won’t that be nice? Is that wrong to admit? Would he only be valued and listened to as a part of Thomas, if he went back to his old ways? It would be so freeing to shove all the hate they had thrown onto him back at them. Make them feel like an outsider for once. Make them feel hated. But.. he knew that it would never work. He could never have the will within himself to do it. He couldn’t hurt them even more. “...No, no I can’t. I can’t make them fear me. Never again.” He murmured, shoving the lying side’s hand away as he stared to the ground. “They may not actually see me as famILY, but... they’re mine. And they always will be. I just have to... fix things, somehow, even if Roman hates me. So, thank you, but no thank you.”

Virgil looked back up when he heard... laughing...? Confused, he looked at Deceit, watching as he almost cruelly laughed to himself. “Never? Oh, Virgil Virgil Virgil,” He cooed sweetly, cupping the side of his face with his hand. Virgil was about to pull away... but he couldn’t. In fact, he couldn’t even move. He was just stuck, look up at Deceit’s amused expression with a blank one. He could feel something drawing circles in the side of his face like it was dancing around the spots with his skin met Deceit’s gloved hand, and all he could start to see was is bright, blinding yellow. “Did you really think you would have a choice in this? No. You will come back, you will turn back to how you were, and you will forget all about this stupid little fake family you’ve made.” He watched with great satisfaction as Virgil robotically nodded. “Yes, Deceit.”

“Now, you’ll never leave us again, right Virgil?”

“Never, Deceit.”
