being named after the patron saint of dying people, girls, spinners, librarians and archivist is kinda funny. there's gotta be a layer of irony there. i love writing angst, i wanted to be a mortician, everywhere i go i try to get a library card for that city, i love any and all fiber arts. i didn't even know i was named after her until about a year ago and somehow almost everything she's patronage of is what i'm interested in.
Damian could in fact quit robin or vigilantism all together and stay an important character and have solo stories and even long ongoings on himself in the hero world. The reason this isn't going to happen is because DC is getting rid of all their civilian cast because they're centering vigilantism so much and fighting specifically so much. The DC universe would be so much richer if we could have stories with a hero/vigilante who was focused solely on on healing people, search and rescue groups, investigation journalism, certain kinds of private detectives, jury duty...
I'm not even getting into militant activisim and mutual aid despite the treasure trove about stories on heroism and wanting to help and commity with this stuff but even without those, DC just doesn't care about the massive amount of everyday actors who are actually essential to any kind of matter of justice. Obviously, DC always had a problem with that, but it feels like it has gotten so much worse recently with the erasure of civilan casts.
And before you tell me "it's not the genre!" John Constantine. John doesn't fight his battles. John is some kind of manipulative PI from hell. Oracle!Barbara doesn't fight her own battles. What the fuck is stopping us from having an investigation journalism mystery Lois Lane where she, with all her contact network and her own actual damn skill, navigates a work of action and mystery and takes down supervillains and fights can happen but victory isn't ensured by who punches the hardest but by the legal consequences of the revelations she publishes?
Wonder Woman was an actual ambassador for ages. I made a post about how I wanted to hear about the paperwork and actually just see her do diplomatic work and I thought I was just being a nerd but people reacted to that and actually you know what we do really much want to see stories about Wonder Woman as an Amazonian diplomat!
Damian having a solo run where he is a medical first respondant who uses the skills he learnt as fighter/vigilante to get into dangerous places and combat zones etc. to rescue and heal peoples caught in the crosshairs of whatever fight or catastrophe is going on. It would rock. It would be awesome.
Don't get me wrong I love cool badass fights, there are some genres and contexts in which I would actually want there to be more cool badass fights. But DC's universe is currently running on practically only that, in such a varied great universe and that's why they're running on steam and keep making dumb changes to try to keep the stakes high because they worry they're boring now. They're constructing a world where no matter what they claim, the only efficient force at play in any conflict is violence. They have no other angle and they're panicking because they're aware that it's turning them boring and they're flying forward because all their solutions to try and keep things entertaining keep erasing the richness of their universe in order to try and make things more thrilling because they do not understand the gold they are working with. Don't get me wrong, DC is big and we do still have writers pulling cool shit, but DC editorial is having an identity crisis. They're not even writing detective stories anymore!! Their name is Detective Comics. Why should we care whether or not Batman is the greatest detective in the world if Batman's number one hobby right is physically fighting aliens...
There is no cool power or crazy evil villain you can invent that can change the fact that there's a repetitiveness of turning a beautiful rich universe full of civilians with untapped potential into a plain giant Colliseum in which nuclear families come to compete in solo and group fights with random villains and eachother in a number of configurations. And of course, because it's implied in about any critical post I make about dc but just to be crystal clear: this is political.
damian would be such a good wilderness paramedic. search and rescue, including high-angle and water rescue. environmental emergencies, treating injuries with low resources, advanced first aid. trauma management.
wilderness is a bit of a misleading term because they're also trained to work on off-shore oil rigs, overseas military contracting, just anywhere that's remote with limited resources.
there's an extreme untapped potential in stories about pre-hospital emergency medicine. i might be biased because i work in that field but yolo
there's also swat medicine but dc would immediately turn it into a "THIS IS A GOOD COP" story.
even good ol street medicine would be nice. getting dispatched out for a call with severely limited information, not knowing who your patient is or what's wrong with them. sometimes not even knowing where it is you need to go, just a vague area.
knowing how to read a situation and under body language, deescalating a situation before it ever becomes one. just knowing how to talk to people.
understanding patients. empathy empathy empathy. knowing you're there on what might be the worst day of their life. they're going to be mean and high-strung and disrespectful because they aren't trained to handle these types of situations, you are.
it'd be such a testament to damian's character growth and could expand on it in so many wonderful ways.
(and if dc were feeling especially courageous, it could expand on how awful it is to work in pre-hospital emergency medicine. long hours, shit pay, the culture of not speaking about mental health, the physical health hazards, the burnout, losing the ability to connect with people outside of the job, seeing the people that never even makes it to an ER, and all the other stuff i'm drawing a blank on)
Different anon here, but I saw that ask about giving Prime his own Trinity, and my personal suggestion is Vanessa Kapatelis. She's not an Amazon, so Idk if she counts, but I remember seeing a post comparing her to Jason, and I think her villain origin story is pretty similar to Prime's.
I'm not totally familiar with Vanessa Kapatelis (to the uninitiated reading, she's the Wonder Woman rogue Silver Swan), but I looked over her wiki page real quick and she sounds super cool! I think she would fit with them pretty well. I like this suggestion a lot... I agree that her villain origin story sounds a lot like Prime's!
It's been 3 months. I'm reading for Vanessa right now. Anon was cooking so hard I couldn't see through the flames. I am so here for Vanessa as Prime's Wonder Woman. I'm 100% down. Them + Jason would the funniest trio of all time. You have Jason and Vanessa being condescending assholes, Vanessa and Prime being extremely possessive over their titles they believe they have the right to, and Prime and Jason being... them. I love it. I love this. The worst friend group one could possibly cook up. I would do anything for it.

I started taking medication (risperdone, 2mg) for ocd and while theres no huge difference they’ve definitely helped!! Also I hated fluoxetine!!! The side effects sucked so bad and it didnt help like at all. I’m on escitalopram (20mg) and it has almost no side effects as far as I’m aware (it’s why I picked it). Sorry for this random ass ask but I started medication recently and I feel like it really helped and then I saw your post idk😊

duke is implied to be immortal. duke has umbrakinesis. duke amplifies others powers when they’re close to him. jason might as well be immortal with the amount of times he’s died and implied to be dead and subsequently revived. jason has the all-blades which is essentially soul magic. the all-caste is all about metaphorical (literal? hell if i know) shadow and light. duke is the literal shadow and light. duke and jason going on a magical bonding adventure. in this essay i will—
duke’s ability to amp up other meta’s powers is a background power and it’s fully unconscious. jason has an intrinsic affinity for soul magic but hasn’t been trained on it too much thanks to the general all-caste insanity. in tandem, their power combine and jason’s powers are boosted enough for him to accidentally link their souls. jason’s soul is fragmented and now it’s linked to duke’s and seeping energy away from duke. forced magical adventure bonding for them to figure out how to unlink their souls so jason doesn’t accidentally kill duke.

first things first, the all-caste and all the magic associated with it would get a total revamp. it’s too “white boy discovers asian culture and is better than all of them after a short training period while it took the rest of them a life time” for my liking. why is this such a common trope in comics. boooo. anyway.
the all-caste is just the tip of the iceberg for soul magic. they exist because the fields of all whatever the hell it’s called i actually forgot oops. the fields of all is essentially a place where the link between the physical world and spiritual world is thin and that’s why there’s time dilation stuff going on.
there’s multiple of these spots scattered around the world. that’s right. jason training montage baby. he needs to get his ass kicked. he needs to struggle. THE BATS DON’T HAVE TO BE GOOD AT EVERYTHING DC PLEASE GOD LET THEM STRUGGLE

the all-caste places a lot of significance on light and dark, good versus evil, but that’s stupid. grey is my favorite color and by god i will make dichotomies co-exist with the spaces in between. a fire will destroy a forest but without it the forest will destroy itself. life grows from the ash as long as no one comes by to salt it.
soul magic in itself is about balance. it destroys and takes as much as it vitalizes and gives. jason would struggle with the vitalization aspect.
duke, on the other hand, would thrive in the vitalization aspect. his whole thing is building community and doing good because he has the capability to do so. he’s also so intuitive with other people and can understand other’s psyche with ease.
jason? not so much.
they’re on this whole trip to separate their souls and heal the damage to duke’s soul. surface level, they’re complete opposites. do a bit of a deep dive and they’re pretty damn similar in so many aspects.
another bit i wanna explore is duke’s “sacrifice is selfish” vs jason’s “love me and i’ll sacrifice all i am for you”
basically just duke’s self-surety and jason’s complete lack of sense of self.
duke would thrive with the soul magic, if he was the one who had it. jason doesn’t thrive. he struggles. he lashes out. duke doesn’t take any shit.
forced bonding full of so much arguing and moments where they’re taken back from how much they actually get along and agree with each other.
duke would be so helpful for dealing with the untitled as well
jason “i’ll do this on my own” versus duke “you’re only as strong as your weakest link. teamwork makes the dream work”

Oh my god ok you’re a genius I love this idea so much.
The whole idea of Jason having these powers that to Duke seem so intuitive, but for Jason hes just STRUGGLING. And Duke just being like, “genuinely what is your problem.”
I can just imagine Duke getting SO frustrated with Jason, and then Jason getting frustrated in turn cause “ITS NOT THAT EASY DUKE!!”
And just the whole idea of these two teaming up. I love it so much, please do ramble more.

jason’s soul magic is so prevalent on finding equilibrium within, and while on the surface, jason seems to be open with his emotions and connected to them, he’s really not. he’s a liar, not only to those around him, but to himself.
duke’s motivations are clear. he fell headfirst into this life for his parents. he helps people because that’s what his mom would do and that’s what she taught him. there’s no doubt in his mind about his placement because he has that self-confidence. he embraces it.
i don’t want this to become a jason morality struggle fic because i believe that’s the one thing he is sure about and that his use of capital punishment is essential to his character. don’t remember the exacts on duke’s morality but him and cass are self-proclaimed siblings so i would imagine it leans towards anti-killing. it’s something i’ll have to reread some comics before making any decisions on it
some points of bonding between them would be
one: their shared love of literature
two: their similar music tastes
duke is a poet and even writes his own, and it’s one of the few things he doesn’t really share about himself. and jason’s well-known love of classics
duke listens to metal while jason listens to punk (and metal as of newer comics)
i think they’d enjoy arguing literary thematics and when jason gets dramatic and starts quoting soliloquies or other dramatic readings, duke can finish the quotes and steal jason’s thunder (jason is secretly delighted about this)
anyway. jason’s lack of community—for all its various reasons—and duke who will build community with his bare hands dammit just fascinate me
