The thing about character design theory is I really think we shouldn’t just keep reinforcing our “this is what a sneaky and untrustworthy character looks like, this is what a threatening and intimidating character looks like, this is what an innocent character worth protecting looks like, this is what a smart and competent character looks like, this is what a man looks like vs what a woman looks like” conventions like they’re innate human wiring that we tap into scientifically and not like, heavily societal

Character design, like all visual design, relies on a pool of collective symbolism and association. You can choose to not call upon specific iconography or subvert stereotypical design association. Ultimately, you need to understand what it is that you are signaling with your character design and whether that’s what you want or not. Your milage may vary with this, considering the complex interplay between character design, writing, the medium at hand, its world, and its context.
Okay, so how do I as a writer/artist/oc haver/etc. counteract visual generalizations? Go look at people! As many different kinds of people as you can. Draw people who are different, look at how different cultures have portrayed beauty differently over history. Seek out how people feel about certain visual tropes in media. Find out what about those designs makes them good or bad examples. Experience art with different cultural touchstones, different symbols and associations, different ideas of beauty.
When designing a character, try swapping things around just to see. What if your character was a different gender? What if they were a different ethnicity? What if they were bulky or fat or had a big nose or a unibrow? What do they wear? Why do they wear it? What is their relationship with their gender/culture/social status? Just try out different traits and see what kind of character ends up emerging.
We all exist within cultural biases, tropes, associations, and stereotypes. I’ve found that exploring visual language from a mindset of curiosity and discovery to be helpful with this rather than from a “oh no i don’t want to do something bad” mindset. Like, it’s cool and fun to research a culture for an OC and learn about the language, the political struggles, the stories! Even fantasy/scifi can benefit from the inspiration of seeing how many different ways people have found to be people.
