i honestly don't really understand why "some people prefer watching gameplay online rather than playing games themselves" is treated as such a taboo when being a spectator is considered a pretty mundane way to engage with most sports, game shows, reality tv or even just like. chess.
SPOILERS FOR THE BACKROOMS AND EVERYTHING MUST GO ‼️‼️
I have yet to see anyone talk about it, so I'll talk about it here lol. I'm rewatching the backrooms (hello everything must go), and I'm noticing that there are wind chimes regularly (and I think almost always, if not always) accompanying Dr. Mary Kline in scenes she's in. This seems relatively harmless, or maybe it's not notable, but I feel like it has major implications given it's been confirmed that the movie is a continuation of the YouTube series.
I think it needs to be addressed that in every single video of the YouTube series, we only hear wind chimes accompanying one person. The mysterious Ivan Beck. Someone notoriously associated with the establishment of the backrooms. Generally speaking, we don't actually have a lot of information about Ivan Beck. He has an eye injury, he had a hand in the initial door to the backrooms opening, he theoretically used to work for the government. There's the belief that he's seeking a way into the backrooms (possibly after finding one of the two tapes that clipped back into reality, either the initial Kane Parsons tape or the unnamed girl's tape), and that it may have the key to curing what may be dementia, given the rooms propensity for "remembering" things.
All that to say, wind chimes are associated with Ivan Beck. This is a generally agreed upon fact. So why are they accompanying Mary Kline of all people?
That, I'm not sure of. There are many theories as to what's up with Mary's mother. A popular one is that Mary grew up in the backrooms, and perhaps that's the reason why she ended up in an institution. Because let's be honest here, ASync has a track record of "disappearing" employees who disappear into the backrooms, who become liabilities. Marvin in particular is The Example. Upon disappearing into the backrooms on an exploratory mission. What is days or weeks for Marvin is two months outside of the rooms, and as a result they fake Marvin's death. So this particular theory isn't unlikely.
Similarly along with this theory, we see Clark descend into madness during his time in the rooms. That's another popular theory, that maybe her mother left the backrooms a little less same, and when she leaves making a fuss over a fantastical neverending liminal space, one where she raised a child, of course she gets committed.
So what are the implications of this particular theory (which for the purpose of this post and for my own personal theories, we're going with the Klines living in the backrooms)? I think it is VERY worth noting in terms of this theory that the backrooms were pitched to the government as a way of conserving space. There were plans drawn out for endless apartments and neighborhoods and stores and whatnot, all built into the backrooms. There are many neighborhoods in the rooms, we see many houses and interior design similar to what would be found in houses.
Though this can be attributed to the room "remembering" these places from people. Kane fell into the backrooms, and the room we see in the girl's found footage is confirmed to be the layout of Kane's home growing up. The hotel front in one of the episode of the YouTube series, though I can't remember which atm, is a hotel irl, which I also can't remember the name of. In the newly released Everything Must Go, we see signs from Cap'n Clark's furniture store (which leads into the beginning of the movie where Naren Warne is separated from his group by Pirate Clark, which puts Clark finding the backrooms BEFORE everything must go and the tape at the start of the movie). However, I think there are greater implications to this, especially considering the theory that Mary was raised in the backrooms. Her mother says something along the lines of "they're everywhere", which could be referring to still lives or the bacteria entities, which I think is the main point people pull this theory from. So I'm going to circle us back around to the living situation and intentions of building society in the rooms.
I think the wind chimes accompany Mary because she was the first experiment to see if life is sustainable in the rooms. Ivan Beck is the driving force behind the rooms, believing the rooms hold the key to stopping his dementia and returning his memory, as mentioned above (or at least this is my personal belief. I'm a big fan of MrHunteru's lore compilation and theories). However, to secure funding they need to attempt to execute their initial proposal. Do I actually believe that's the reason? Realistically, no, but until the movie is released to streaming, I have the memory of a goldfish and also I don't have the mind for semantics of theories like this, so that's what we're going with right now. I'll leave the fine details to the experts. Now there are about a million theories and possibilities as to WHY the wind chimes accompany Mary, but idk, this is the one I'm going with. I do think my theory here may mean something or be a possibility, ESPECIALLY considering in the credits, there are special thanks given to Ivan Beck.
Possibly that upbringing is an experiment by Ivan Beck or Async, though I'd think Ivan Beck would have had a personal hand in it given the wind chimes accompanying Mary. Or maybe the mother is someone who stumbled into a nullzone with her daughter, or while she was pregnant, etc etc, and Async was aware and didn't retrieve them. I think this theory in particular is interesting and maybe viable because at the end of the movie, Mary zones Phil out, and we hear wind chimes as the camera pans to a demolished home, which we're led to believe is where Mary is raised.
I don't know, like I said, this theory may not be viable, as there are a gajillion little plot points and pieces that matter, and there are obviously things that haven't been confirmed or we haven't noticed. Semantics, yada yada. I think it's fun though, and there ARE greater implications to the wind chimes appearing with Mary. I'm so intrigued as to WHAT those implications are and what it means lore wise, but as Kane mentioned there's already interest in a sequel, I imagine we're going to get a million more lore pieces that may explain or invalidate that connection.

today I found out my mother doesn’t know what dandelions are and now I’m wondering what other strange secrets she’s been quietly harboring
Where do you live that you don’t have dandelions?
we have dandelions EVERYWHERE, they are basically our State Weed, it is absolutely impossible that my mom has never interacted with a dandelion before, this requires further investigation
So after extensive interrogation I have an update:
my mom is in fact aware that dandelions exist. she temporarily forgot the name and there was some miscommunication.
the truth is actually weirder
she’s aware dandelions look like this
she is familiar with this flower. she knows the name of this flower. she declines to believe, however, that these are also dandelions
she does not believe these are the same plant. I tried to explain, and she thought I was either misinformed or lying. so I asked her what exactly did she think the yellow ones were called?
she answered, with complete confidence: Daffodils.
gosh I enjoy this website
For comparison, this is a daffodil
See, folks in the southern US will tell you up and down those are buttercups, actually.
i don’t think so? i’m southern and buttercups are what we call these things (much tinier)
Wait I thought those bigger cup ones were Easter Lillies???
This is an Easter Lily. It is an actual lily and therefore deadly to cats.
They’re marigolds and I know a bitch when I see one!
This is a marigold:
….we need to start taking the phrase “go touch grass” more literally. go outside and examine a flower i beg u
“buttercups” is a name applied to MANY flowers. in my part of the south it was this one:
imo there’s correct identifications of dandelions, daffodils, easter lilies and marigolds in this thread, but buttercups are simply impossible to agree on and the only solution is for everyone to post pictures of their local buttercups
*squints* is that a motherfucking EVENING PRIMROSE?!??
Hello I would like to add to the confusion:
That purple fella is a Morning Glory as told by my mothers (texan)
⬆️ morning glory
#amazing work everyone hit the flowers
I'm going to be lame and contribute a Southern flower that I believe is typically known by its real and legal name?
SPIDER LILY

Disability Tropes: The Perfect Prosthetic
[ID: A screenshot from the movie Nimona, showing Nimona, a small white girl with red hair, grabbing the right prosthetic arm of Ballister, a knight in black armour with black hair and light brown skin. He is holding a broken bottle in his prosthetic hand while Nimona admires his arm. Overlaid on the screenshot is white text that reads "Disability Tropes: The Perfect Prosthetic" /End ID]
In a lot of media, prosthetic limbs are portrayed as these devices that act as a near-perfect replacement for a character who has lost, or was born without a limb. So much so that in a lot of cases, the use of a prosthetic has basically no impact on the character beyond a superficial level or their appearance, or it's portrayed as something that's even better than the old meat-limb it's replacing. This trope shows up most often in Sci-fi, but it shows up in all kinds of stories outside of that, even otherwise very grounded ones!
If a story isn't depicting the loss of a limb as the be-all-end-all worst thing that can happen to a person, they almost always default to a perfect prosthetic, functionally curing the amputation with it. But the reality is that prosthetics are FAR from perfect, and as someone who has used them for their entire life I don't think they ever will be. Limb difference is still and always will be a disability, regardless of the prosthetics available, and this really isn't a bad thing.
Why is this trope so common?

Notes on Torturing The Character In The Science Facility
my takes on this trope rarely if ever have anything to do with the character being "special" or being studied for powers they innately have, if they are special its something that was done to them
it's about the medical trauma
it's about the violation and lack of bodily autonomy
the "living weapon" trope, but the key characteristic is catastrophic functionality
i love, love, love the concept of "catastrophic functionality" in a person: character that can tank ludicrous amounts of damage and just Keep Going in virtually all circumstances barring outright dismemberment. They can keep going, so do they "deserve" rest and/or pain relief?
after a lifetime of having their distress treated as whiny and unreasonable, they have what would be a dangerously high tolerance to pain and exhaustion.
another key function of the Science Facility is to fix the damage Character takes, maybe using enhanced healing technologies or 3D printed organs or something. this leads to Character's body being treated as relatively disposable cause "we can just fix them"
extreme version of this: Character can't die even if they wanted to
people who work with Character are informed that they're dangerous and arbitrarily violent, and their fear of Character makes it easier to justify restricting autonomy
It is TRUE, cause Character does not have tools to set boundaries or protect their body other than violence. vicious cycle of being perceived as dangerous and therefore denied autonomy, and being forced to use violence to defend autonomy
the restraints used to hold Character look like major overkill, which underscores how dangerous they are. LOVE this trope
character being desexualized to the point that their non-consent to touch, to being stripped down and examined, or to procedures is trivialized. There is no non-clinical context for their body, and the "clinical" framework eclipses any possibility for bodily violation to be understood as violent.
types of uncanniness: Character looks human but has some subtle inhuman traits or characteristics. (I'm obsessed with reflective eye shine, personally.) OR Character looks like they've been taken apart and put back together, like flesh pulled over a much more unforgiving and indestructible metal scaffold. OR Character gives off "undead" vibes; they're just not quite alive in a way that sets off air raid sirens in people's brains
Often, Character is dead and Came Back Wrong (varying levels of literalness)
anyways yeah. i never stopped writing this trope and probably never will. it's a good one

i've opened the window
i'm not coming back
Was driving with my grandmother and in broken English she says “no eyes… no nose… no face. Don’t trust.” To which I looked around wildly in search of this omen of ill portend.
Cybertruck. It was a cybertruck.
