Thinking about Filament Station.
Simon is terrified. Terrified that he will wake up and this world will be gone and replaced with steel walls and rusted iron bars. Terrified that this is a dream just waiting for the right moment to snap him back to reality.
Simon was always imaginative. He had ideas the COI and Eden alike wanted to squash down. Unlike all those before him, Simon could never back down. People were in charge, and yet everyone was dying. There needed to be a change. And Simon was willing to make that happen so that more people didn't have to suffer like his mother had.
Filament Station wasn't just a station.
Stuck in orbit around a dead planet with moons of blood. The planet was uninhabitable. The moons held secrets Father said they needed to discover.
Simon never did trust Father, not after his mother died. Simon trusted his brothers, though. What a mistake that was.
The plan was to commandeer Filament Station. Simon wasn't a pilot, not truly, but he was the closest thing they had. The plan was to go to the nearest star. One that wasn't dimming with each passing year. A real star. Still there in the universe.
Filament had a farm on it. Biofuel and food was of no concern.
He doesn't know who did it. The captain’s bay had an emergency self-launch to save the crew if anything happened to the cabin. It was only Simon in the captain’s bay when the explosion shook the ship.
Filament Station had exploded.
And Simon was the only survivor.
The ship had an emergency recall system. If it was up to Simon, he would've kept in course to the star. He knows he would never have made it.
Instead, the ship piloted itself back to the dead planet and into the hands of the COI.
Simon often wakes up in the bed wondering when the sheets will turn into the blood of his coffin.
He eats breakfast, wondering when Grace’s cooking will turn to the sour taste of copper on his tounge.
He sits under the tree, wondering when the branches will turn into jaws to swallow him whole.
Simon wonders, just how imaginative his mind had to be to conjure an entire world in his dying moments.
