i remembered the post you did on enclaves thoughts on gender. ilphaer is trans, right? does she have any thoughts on it?
SHE SURE DOES.
Uh. First secret is that the majority of my characters do deal with gender and sexuality in some way, it's just not something I feel like is particularly worth highlighting unless I'm talking about it directly in the context its cropping up. It's not exactly easy to be like "Hey ya'll heres the way homophobia and transphobia is cropping up in the context of drow society" even when i do think most of the people that follow me are generally interested in explorations of that. Even the Cis characters i have tend to have some level of this, with Sabdra dealing with the more traditional bloodborn-esc horror themes of femininity (ie:; having her womb ripped from her and child killed) and Beltrin dealing with wanting to engage with his sexuality and how he is navigating that while being a victim of pretty explicit sexual assault in a society that doesn't allow for either of those things.
I'm of the belief as author that gender and sexuality and relationship to it is something deeply human; be it engagement with, rejection of, or conforming to. I personally think that even the statement, "This character hasn't thought about their gender or sexuality" is as much a statement of character as a Trans character that has thought about it. It tells you about them and how they see their body and place within society.
Anyway. Let me not get too off track. Ilphaer.
Uh. Cw; Lots of discussion on Transphobia and Sexism on this one. Standard for the drow, but still worth warning about when it's this thorough of an exploration of it.
Ilphaer's story is a very purpose exploration of the binary trans experience in the various drow societies. Save for in lolth culture, Ilphaer has purposefully never been a traditional Lolthite story just by nature of having been raised in Sshamath. She gets the generational trauma of her mother having been part of it and being directly targeted and affected by it, but she was raised separately to the Menzobarranzan level of oppression.
So to summarize Ilphaer's thoughts on her gender before I fully explain it: It is not that she hated being a man, it is that she enjoys being a woman more. She's more comfortable with herself and her identity as a woman, but she transitioned pretty late in life (it would be around 35-40 by human standards) and so she spend a large period of it as man. She cannot bring herself to fully reject her lived experiences as man because of how long she identified as one.
And this is specific to Ilphaer and her thoughts on gender, I do have character who have the "I've always been my gender and I was born in the wrong body" approach to trans-identity, but thats not Ilphaer.
One of the things that actually chased her away from Eilistraee's church is this... Okay hold on. Let me actually grab something from how Ed Greenwood describes the priestesses and how they see the participants of the changedance.
Yes, you heard me right: there now ARE a few males among her church, but to enter it they have all “Danced The Changedance” and spent time as female, just as Mystra caused Elminster to spend time as Elmara - - and for the same reasons: greater understanding and sensitivity of “the life of the other gender.” One cannot truly feel the Divine Dance of Eilistraee PROPERLY except as a female, and so her (still very rare, few, and generally secretive about it) male priests must spend some time as a female (not just for the duration of a ritual, but they must do some everyday living as a female). The most accomplished drow, elf, half-elf, and human male priests seem to feel the need to take female form for some days every few years or so (if they wish to “cleave more fully to the Goddess” and thus rise in levels), and most spend longer and longer times in female form. Not all female priests of the Goddess fully trust the males, and they don’t tend to rise much in the church hierarchy (no matter what character levels they achieve).
More than that, many drow priestesses of Eilistraee are unhappy about this, and may prove hostile (not to the point of violence or refusal to accept or aid, but with a coldness in manner and a wary “always watching over” any males, until they achieve acceptance on a personal level [e.g. “I still don’t hold with allowing males - - males! - - to join the dances, but Elorand can be trusted; he’s proven himself over and over, and don’t think we haven’t tested him. Other males, I still don’t trust!”). Eilistraee has always had enough personal contact with her clergy that none of them would think of disbelieving that she truly means this “new way” to occur and to be followed - - and no established priestess of Eilistraee will renounce this new order, either. (“Reluctantly accepting and unhappily coping” is a good description of their state; “defying the goddess and rejecting males or trying to trick or lead them into fatal mishaps so we can be rid of them” would NOT be an accurate characterization.)
Source, of course
Before I start using The Big Scary words in this analysis, let me say: I don't think this is bad writing. I think this makes sense in the context of the world building and is very revealing about the general culture of the church. What I'm about to analyze is strictly Doylist acknowledgement and not something that is a flaw in the writing itself. You can tell with how Ed is describing this that this is meant to be a flaw these priestesses have - a belief that is Wrong and goes directly against Eilistraee's that they're struggling to overcome.
Anyway.
Eilistraee's Priestesses have a very thin idea of what "good femininity" is. The changedance is, culturally (though, probably not what Eilistraee intended for it to be), an affirmation of that idea of femininity. The way Ed describes the priestesses treatment towards those that undergo it is with this level of irritation, distrust, and judgement. They're portrayed as monitoring the participants of the changedance (be the individual a man only momentarily taking the form of a woman, or someone who genuinely comes to identify as one)
Like as much as her church is advertised as the more accepting one, this is (I would argue) very stock standard transphobia, baby! And weirdly (though I would not claim to know whats going on in Greenwoods head regarding his thoughts on his gender) he managed to capture a lot of layers of transphobia with this in both transmasculinity and transfemininity, be it the "You only want to transition to get power in our society" often described in the transmasc experience or "We don't trust you as a true woman" often described in the transfem experience
And this is an aspect of it that has been critiqued before but needs brushed over again in these contexts: It is a little weird that only men need to be the ones to experience "life as the other gender." Yes, Eilistraee is a mother goddess. Yes, she embodies this idea of a gentle and nurturing figure. Men are not incapable of embodying the ideas and traits we generally associate with motherhood. And in fact, I would argue the fact that they both only view woman as being able to embody these traits and only view that as the "right way" to be a woman is.... Bad.
I don't think Eilistraee's Priestesses would take kindly to someone like Ilphaer, who will not fully reject her past lived experiences as a man while still embracing the femininity afforded to her by the church and changedance. Ilphaer is crass, she's rude, she opperates out of spite and very explicitly rejects the gentle motherhood Eilistraee's church embodies. She demands commands and demands respect for her identity rather than asking permission for it. She's outspoken and brash about things she perceived as injustice. Her idea of womanhood is what she has made of it- of the harsher and more direct forms of womanhood found in Lolth culture.
and I think that would get under their skin fast.
Mind you. The way she's treated by the worst ends of Vhaeraun's church is, I don't think, any better. A character like Malakuth, who she's been doing dealings with since before she transitioned, doesn't respect or fear her as a woman, he feels annoyance towards her as someone Playing as one. He doesn't accept her identity in a deeply patronizing way.
But its not hard for her to ignore what he has to say about her gender, because Malakuth is not a good person and not trying to say he is one. Compared to Eilistraee's church, who largely are advertising themselves and their morals as good.
(As a reminder, Malakuth as much as I make jokes about him, is a sexist slaver, he's NOT a good person)
So that's her thoughts on gender, and what I'm chosing to explore though her. She transitioned because she wants to, specifically as a form of self expression and joy. She doesn't fully reject her former identity as a man, viewing it as a part of who she once was. But she is not a man, and does not stand to be called one. Not unlike reclaiming her idea of religion, she has reclaimed her own idea of gender. She is not attempting to live up to anyones idea of womanhood but her own. She is the happiest she's ever been as a result of this. She makes jokes about the fact that her familiar stole her gender, and wants bigger tits.
OH THATS THE OTHER THING. I forgot to mention it in my "Oh fuck, of shit tumblr posted the analysis i did of a very serious topic early" fix; but on a more character driven note. Ilphaer being the one to have a good relationship with her mother isn't accidental in relationship to her being trans. She has had a role model of womanhood from Lolth's culture that isn't one explicitly abusive, she's seen the way one could embody these traits while not being the worst person in the world. She really loves and admires her mother, and in her transition did move to shape part of how she holds herself around her.

The thing that really sucks about the North American housing market besides all of the lack of affordability everywhere that’s not the middle of an abandoned corn field is that there’s no in between options.
In most of the US and Canada there’s detached single family homes with a yard and there’s high rise to mid rise apartments. Very little in between.
Row houses, duplexes, large family sized apartments, etc. do exist but outside of a few locations they’re unusual or only seen as something that poor people live in.
Thing is though that there’s a market for these in between types of housing and they could really help with our density problems where cities are so spread out due to all the detached single family houses that it becomes expensive and environmentally problematic to get utilities to all of them.
I know that I would very much like a cute duplex or row house when I feel financially ready to have kids. Walking distance to a school and a bus stop, tiny yard for an herb garden and citrus tree but not so big that it’s a pain to maintain it, neighbors nearby, easy walking and biking access to the road, hopefully a playground nearby for my kids to use.
But that sort of thing doesn’t really exist where I live and doesn’t exist in a lot of North America. You either live in a small apartment or you live in a house and either way you’re probably forced to own a car.
Anyways our zoning laws in this part of the world are terrible and probably racist and I hate them.
That's almost exactly how my mom raised me and when I tell you she was miserable
I know what leftists say about this kind of thing but I don't think it works in reality. Families need nice houses and cars (I think because the family structure is just barely workable to begin with it's so unnatural)
hi!! over the past year or so, i’ve been radicalizing leftwards (does that make sense?), and while i do like to say that i have a pretty good understanding of things like socialism and communism and such, one thing i haven’t really been able to figure out is what anarchism is and how it works. like, i get the basic idea, but what with google being google and most people on breadtube not being anarchist, it’s definitely not as easy to research as socialism.
anyways, tl;dr: what defines anarchism and how does it work?
thanks in advance! have a cookie 🍪
"Anarchism asserts the possibility of an organization without discipline, fear, or punishment, and without the pressure of poverty: a new social organism which will make an end to the terrible struggle for the means of existence,—the savage struggle which undermines the finest qualities in man, and ever widens the social abyss. In short, Anarchism strives towards a social organization which will establish well-being for all."
leftward ho! thanks for writing. these questions are always difficult to answer because i don’t know where you’re coming from on your personal journey. but i’ll try to answer some of the basics and recommend some good resources to start with.
first of all, there are many anarchisms and if you ask three anarchists you’ll get five opinions. but probably the most prevalent form of anarchism is anarcho-communism, so while i’ll try to talk broadly from a general anarchist position, much of it be from an anarchocommunist perspective for simplicity’s sake.
at it’s most basic, anarchism is an opposition to hierarchy, to one person having control over another. it is a radical commitment to compassion and absolute freedom. like communists, anarchists want a moneyless, stateless, and classless society. unlike leninists, who falsely claim to be communists, we know that there has never been a good state, and never can be. they are by their very nature oppressive, and cannot be used as a means to an end to achieve communism. no group or individual can wield that much power over others and not become corrupted by it. absolute power corrupts absolutely, etc. so while we are committed to the fight against capitalism, we are also committed to the fight against the state. they are intertwined and must be defeated simultaneously. so we believe in the abolition of all government and the organization of society on a voluntary, cooperative basis without recourse to force or compulsion, and the abolition of money and private property, as the best way to ensure the basic and higher needs of everyone are met.
if you haven’t read it yet, the wikipedia article for anarchism is actually a pretty good place to start:
Anarchism is a political philosophy and movement that is skeptical of all justifications for authority and seeks to abolish the institutions they claim maintain unnecessary coercion and hierarchy, typically including, though not necessarily limited to, the state[1] and capitalism. Anarchism advocates for the replacement of the state with stateless societies or other forms of free associations. As a historically left-wing movement, usually placed on the farthest left of the political spectrum, it is usually described alongside communalism and libertarian Marxism as the libertarian wing (libertarian socialism) of the socialist movement.
Humans lived in societies without formal hierarchies long before the establishment of formal states, realms, or empires. With the rise of organised hierarchical bodies, scepticism toward authority also rose. Although traces of anarchist thought are found throughout history, modern anarchism emerged from the Enlightenment. During the latter half of the 19th and the first decades of the 20th century, the anarchist movement flourished in most parts of the world and had a significant role in workers' struggles for emancipation. Various anarchist schools of thought formed during this period. Anarchists have taken part in several revolutions, most notably in the Paris Commune, the Russian Civil War and the Spanish Civil War, whose end marked the end of the classical era of anarchism. In the last decades of the 20th and into the 21st century, the anarchist movement has been resurgent once more.
Anarchism employs a diversity of tactics in order to meet its ideal ends which can be broadly separated into revolutionary and evolutionary tactics; there is significant overlap between the two, which are merely descriptive. Revolutionary tactics aim to bring down authority and state, having taken a violent turn in the past, while evolutionary tactics aim to prefigure what an anarchist society would be like. Anarchist thought, criticism, and praxis have played a part in diverse areas of human society.

i don’t know how much original theory you’ve read before, but i’ll give some reading recs. personally i’m a big fan of peter kropotkin, and found the conquest of bread to be a breath of fresh air after studying marx for years. others have recommended starting with errico malatesta’s anarchy or peter gelderloos’ anarchy works. and zoe baker (anarchopac) is excellent if videos or tweets are more your speed.

people who use tme/tma should all (i get possesed by an ancient spirit of love and kindness) realize that replacing one bioessentialist terminology with another is utterly pointless and maybe also not call people slurs that would be nice too
i hate that nonbinary people can't be, like, nonbinary.
whatever we do, we can't win. we can't be seen as actually nonbinary. people binarize us and often mock us or get aggressive or dismiss and ignore our nonbinaryhood or something else.
if we don't medically transition, we are "just cis trenders."
if we do medically transition, we are "just [binary trans] eggs."
we are "technically transmasc or transfem anyways" if we don't use these terms.
we are lumped together with binary trans men and trans women if we do use these terms. our nonbinaryhood is ignored or seen as some kind of "gender-lite."
we are aggressively pressured to disclose if we're AFAB or AMAB, TMA or TME, transmasc or transfem, "boy nonbinary" or "girl nonbinary." and if we refuse to answer, people get double mad at us and pick something for us anyways.
if we show the slightest hint of something that could be interpreted as binary gendered, we are immediately binarised.
if we put a lot of effort into looking the most ambiguous or androgynous or neutral, people still try to find something. and they become aggressive. people often EXPLODE [PT: explode] when they can't gender someone by glance.
our ways of expression are constantly mocked and ignored (like neopronouns, nonbinary-centering labels for gender and orientation, basically all things that are associated with nonbinary people).
but if we choose more typical ways of expression (for example, use "he/him" or "she/her" pronouns), people use it to ignore and dismiss our nonbinaryhood.
Even amongst other non-cis people I don't tell them my actual gender.
I know most of them won't know what Genderfaun means and if I had to explain it to them it would mean also explaining that there are so many different ways to feel maleness, manhood, masculinity and neutrality and how it can be fluid. It's not just being a man or not being a man. Maleness/manhood/masculinity don't even have to all exist at the same time.
I'd have to explain demiboys and rosboys and being male without being a man and urgh... it's not just cis people who are not receptive to it.
"So you're basically a man." Sometimes?
"So you're trans masc?" Yes, but not in the binary way you're imagining it.
Today, hundreds of people assembled in St. Paul to resist an ICE raid. In this account, a participant describes what took place.
https://crimethinc.com/StPaul2025
Today's events echo the resistance to ICE in Minneapolis on June 3, which helped to set off weeks of open revolt in Los Angeles and countrywide. As federal agencies expand their anti-immigrant operations around the country this week—targeting North Carolina, Louisiana, and Mississippi—and people weigh how to respond, a great deal hangs in the balance.
I think the aversion in our society to coming up w/ utilitarian answers to ethical questions (my favorite hobby) has caused us to cede way too much ground to the assholes of the world in the vein of "Evil will always triumph because good is dumb," as Dark Helmet put it. Like.
Laypeople (and also a concerning number of scientists) have often got the idea that unethical human experimentation is some sort of ultra-effective super science that would fix all the disease and discover all of the medicine and we only don't do it because it isn't nice (see: every science fiction show ever). No! Jumping straight from abstract theory to human trials is a terrible way to do science. It produces incoherent results and useless observations and nonsensical conclusions. We have pages and pages of historical precedent demonstrating this.
And lots of people have got the idea that totalitarianism is some sort of magic super-government that does all the government stuff really effectively abd efficiently and we only don't do it because it isn't nice. No!!!! "Let's put one idiot in charge and do whatever dumb shit they say" is the worst way to organize any project at all, let alone an economy and a political machine. Fascist regimes are models of corruption, waste, and inefficiency.
mengela discovered nothing. 731 discovered nothing. Residential school trials discovered nothing. Unethical medical trials are just cruelty by mediocre people. None of the doctors in these unethical trials were outstanding students or notable doctors. We dont need science fiction we just need history and honesty.
In addition to its being niceys, ethics is a form of rigor. Someone who disregards ethics is (1) Doing It Wrong and (2) just as likely to disregard any other forms of rigor they decide they don't like.

I know you normally just talk about Huskerdust but I'm really curious. What are your thoughts on Sera, Abel, Adam, and Emily's canon sexualities from the pride merch?
I don't have many thoughts other than the fandom's collective horror around Abel being straight is the funniest shit ever. Like, people were having breakdowns on Twitter over this. The exact vibes of this infamous video
not to be a joyless hag but I've started seeing genderbent "yuri" shipping Markiplier and Ryan Gosling and I can't help but think of someone I recently I unfollowed for posting that they have an easier time caring about genderbent versions of boy characters than regular fictional women
and I'm also building some connections to that post I made about reading books by Black women (you know the one) and the people who would respond by saying something akin to "joke's on you, I only read fanfic 😜" as if that were some kind of clever loophole and not a demonstration of the exact thing I was talking about
like yes fandom is about fun or whatever but idk man at what point has your desire for no thoughts head empty uncritical consumption left you splashing around in something that's been blended down to an indistinguishable goo for the sake of avoiding anything remotely challenging. with the thing that's "challenging" here being. you know. giving a shit about women and Black people and like frankly anyone but your shippable white men (and honorary Markiplier).
i do wish the response to the ai water usage concern debate (umm actually the water and mineral usage is roughly equivalent to all of our other constantly growing massive distributed information systems that require enormous amounts of resource extraction etc etc etc) was less of a "haha checkmate luddites" and more of a "hmm maybe we should reevaluate our usage of constantly growing massive distributed information systems that require enormous amounts of resource extraction" but idk
You ever think about many peices of media have zero women and thats just perfectly normal but if a peice of media has an all female cast people get... like that? Women should be allowed to kill over this btw

I wish I could make white people(and not just white Americans) understand how diverse the pre-columbian Americas were. The history, religion, culture, politics was at least as complex as Europe's. There was the full gamut of religions, from monotheists to animists to ancestral religions. There were city building empires, village farmers, nomadic traders, and so many other ways to live. This is all just based on what we know, the fragments left behind and the stories of survivors of an apocalyptic plague. All this before the most extended campaign of genocide in history was waged in an attempt to wipe out those survivors.
Over 500 years spent trying to cut down a whole trunk of human culture.
Do you understand how much poorer our whole species is because of it? Can you imagine where art, religion, and science would be if we still had these vast bodies of knowledge? The stain of the colonial project will never be fully washed clean. We owe more than just the land to those we stole from. We owe them a whole future, a future that could have been brighter for all of us. If only greed and fear weren't allowed to rule this land.
I suppose you're chill with kinks around pedophilia and incest too. Not like thoughts and impulses ever manifest in reality so who cares. Or is that too far for some reason
Thank you for the polite and good-faith question! I will answer in similar politeness and good faith:
I can tell you're stupid so I'll break it down for you because I have nothing but generosity in my heart for people Bush left behind. I know he was a fast motherfucker I don't blame you for not keeping up. You are ultimately a victim of the system
