one of my favorite subtle implications in the series is that it seems the Titan Army was fully banking on Percy being the host of Kronos. Why else would they make their main base a cruise ship if their primary enemy is a son of Poseidon? Named after Andromeda, the wife of Perseus? Why would they work on Oceanus specifically being free so much? Side notably with other children of Poseidon? Why plant Zeus and Hades' items of power on Percy when Luke already had them? Why only Zeus and Hades' items, not Poseidon's? Well because they really need Percy as Kronos' host, that's why. (and Poseidon siding with them because of that would be a bonus as well)
I like to imagine Luke's cabin on the Princess Andromeda is fully decked out with like "WELCOME PERCY" and sea-themed sheets and everything and he hates it so much cause it's a constant reminder he failed and he was Kronos' second choice. Also then he gets his super special pegasus not even exactly stolen by Percy, but the pegasus willingly defects to be Percy's personal steed instead, which must just be insult to injury. Luke has immense one-sided beef with Percy and Percy has no idea.
percy as camp half bloods union representative was so real actually like he goes to the underworld, the literal place you go where you die and he's immediately talking to charon like. have you thought about organizing against the wealthy man controlling you 🤔 are your wages increasing to match inflation? and then he actually brings it up to hades. shrek they don't even have dental moment truly
be honest. are you guys only hanging out with me because of the prophecy.
If the pjo universe ended definitively with the last olympian I could understand the whole “percy never would turn against the gods because he wouldn’t be able to justify the unavoidable losses it would bring” perspective but the issue is that in writing hoo Riordan (inadvertently or not) destroyed the optimistic note that pjo left us with. The Last Olympian ended with Percy using his gift to force the gods into accountability and to ensure that no more Silenas or Ethans or Lukes would happen again.
“From now on, I want to you properly recognize the children of the gods,” I said. “All the children …
of all the gods.”
The Olympians shifted uncomfortably.
“Percy,” my father said, “what exactly do you mean?”
“Kronos couldn’t have risen if it hadn’t been for a lot of demigods who felt abandoned by their parents,” I said. “They felt angry, resentful, and unloved, and they had a good reason.”
Then hoo begins no less than three months later by completely breaking all of the promises that were made. Leo and Piper were claimed much older than they should have been. The gods have cut off contact from the camp, leaving our heroes to stumble around blind trying to figure out what the impending doom is. And the savior of Olympus has been plucked from his world, memory wiped, and thrown back into the ring against his will. The message that becomes so painstakingly clear from this is: the Gods have not changed, and if all of the losses from the war and Percy’s sacrifice could not change them, what else would? Like when I say Percy is three seconds away from snapping, its because I cannot imagine any other trajectory at this point. For Percy to not have reason to go against the gods, it has to assume he’s fine with the current status quo, that he’s okay that the events in the last olympian were practically done in vain, and I genuinely can’t imagine pjo Percy being fine with any of that. Like even hoo Percy literally struggles with that bitter anger towards the gods and it just… never has any resolution? As for — “he wouldn’t be able to justify the unavoidable losses it would bring” — those losses already are happening, regardless of what Percy or the others do. Jason is that loss. Percy’s loved ones are still dying because of the gods and if the series were for an older audience, I could have seen Jason’s death as being the tipping point for Percy.
Percy would turn against the gods specifically to stop the losses that are already happening.
#there is no reading of pjo where this isnt the natural conclusion#rick accidentally wove a Percy Snaps narrative into his books and now its unclear if hes gonna follow it up or even is aware of it#so sad man#and honestly you cant fucking throw your character into hell trying to stop a war and NOT expect resentment lmao#like. dark percy or percy snaps or whatever you call it. was long coming with a rumble. its the logical outcome of what you wrote rick (tags from @may-day-jay )
SINCERELY I don’t know how ELSE this is not the inevitable outcome. You finish the last olympian feeling that all of the death and loss and hardships of the series actually meant something. That everything they were fighting for was beautifully culminated in the final moment when Percy turned his wish back on the gods to hold them accountable and to better the lives of demigods and you put the book down satisfied and optimistic that while demigods will probably never have easy lives at least you feel that its going to be so much better.
But then hoo comes and Riordan just… undoes it all? So casually? So carelessly? And I know Rick didn’t intend to but structuring hoo the way he did just ruins so much of the weight and the power of the Last Olympian for me. You read hoo like oh so the gods haven’t changed huh? The demigods are still just pawns in their little games. Glad to know everything in pjo was for naught apparently.
And THEN its the funniest thing because then Riordan did characterize Percy all throughout hoo struggling with bitterness and anger at the gods and sympathizing with Luke and like you said Riordan is weaving these “Percy’s gonna lose it” threads left and right and here’s Percy struggling with a darkness then it never. goes. anywhere. Like I said there’s no resolution its basically “life sucks I’m going to Cali with my girlfriend dont contact me” and thats just so not something pjo Percy would do and I just wanna
alright alright this is the last addition because this is just too long but some more tags that deserve to be here:
#like it’s not even that i’m such a fan of dark percy or characters losing it but there is no other conclusion that makes sense #there is no other ending to his arc that doesn’t sacrifice all of his development or make him seem completely apathetic #percy barely fucking got time to deal with the fact that calypso had been left behind in hoo #the gods betrayals were just piled on and he never got to deal with it!!!!! ( @lucypvnsie )
#it’s in the print that percy is sympathizing with Luke #Percy is resentful and is almost just like Luke in so many cases#and Rick did NOTHING with it? #if he wanted to continue the world fine #but he should’ve kept percy out of it because look where this ended up #tlo was the perfect ending for percy#and it was ruined for what?? capitalism??? ( @jasonsscar )

hm....maybe the reason Percy seems more powerful compared to the other big three kids is because he genuinely loves the ocean while everyone else either only sees their powers as a weapon or they associate it with trauma.
Pov: you’re 12 and your camp counselor just revealed he was the bad guy all along while trauma dumping on you.
need demigods forcefully turning their back on their parent's world and weakening. like. Need. not even want. leo valdez repressing the fire and burning himself from the inside out. i revoke your name, father. clarisse's muscles weakening, blood a far cry from the pure bright red it had been before. it's so dull now. i am not your daughter, and you are not my father. there is only half of your soul left and it's eating itself
Tired of “oh Percy would be a marine biologist” “oh Percy would be a teacher” that man is a stay at home dad. And I mean that.
hazel levesque is the biggest example of adultification i've seen in awhile. all of the heroes of olympus (aka the seven) were 16, 17, or 15 at least. hazel was THIRTEEN YEARS OLD- and she was dating a 16 year old boy, had been through absolute hell, and was always describe as "mature" and "motherly".... she is a CHILD. why can't black girl kids just be KIDS
the adultification of black girls is a huge issue and rick did nothing but add on to it. and he didn't do this to any other characters, just hazel. like why

sucks how white gays ran to cancel Rowling bc she was transphobic and they protect their own but they're dragging their feet to cancel Riordan bc he's just racist and it doesn't affect them
to my fellow white gays please remember just because he gave us semi good rep with his lgbtqia+ rep doesn't mean he's a good person and we shouldn't defend him because we do not understand!!!!!
BIPOC fans lifted us up when we had qualms about his writing but you guys won't even acknowledge the racism??? stop defending a cishet rich man he isn't our friend and he doesn't have our best interests at heart.
rick riordan drinking “respect people of color and lesbians” juice
dont hide this in the tags

I love how Nico’s like…what? 13? 14? in Heroes of Olympus and he’s telling Jason that like “yeah I loved Percy Jackson so deeply that it shattered me from the inside but I’m like. Over him.” Dude. You are thirteen 😭???? Stop speaking about your 5th grade crush like he was a horrible, vengeful husband that cheated on you making you take a vow to never love again or something 💀

canonically the way athena’s kids are born in PJO is literally insane what do you mean athena takes an interest in a smart human and then a child just shows up on their doorstep like annabeth is literally the immaculate conception SHE’S JESUS?! imagine you charm a woman with your insane autistic rizz about a topic bc you’re an Intellectual and the next day you HAVE A CHILD IN A BASKET ON YOUR DOORSTEP?! also that means PJO-verse Athena DECIDES to CREATE A CHILD FROM HER THOUGHTS whose whole life is about to be suffering and may not survive. like she may be the most darksided olympian
so you’re saying she has a hyperfixation and then an unintended child bro thats even wilder
love the idea of cabin-customized chb shirts especially because after 70 years it's highly unlikely they had any in stock for the big three kids, so when percy gets claimed he has to wear, what, some other cabins shirt? a plain shirt? while they make him some cabin three shirts
somehow they dig up ye olde camp jupiter shirt that no one knows where it came from, and when annabeth sees a camp jupiter shirt in new rome for the first time she is SO mad about it. where did the shirt come from. why did chiron let percy wear it. was this foreshadowing? did the oracle put it there? anyway
