Fun fact: the guys at our college’s geology department prop out the doors with their samples. I totally understand why but as someone whose work with samples is necessarily super delicate and sterile it fucks me up so bad

lol idk if you watch nautilus live at all but watching them process bio & geo samples side by side evokes exactly this Thing (the descriptions are gold too… “here are the 30 steps we use to preserve bio samples, and as for rocks, well, we let them dry, bag them, & put them in the Rock Box)

in my own experience with geology most precautions with samples are to preserve the life and safety of the geologist, most of the rocks are fine. 

i am continually reminded of one of my colleagues, who wanted to collect a sample of gypsum on a field excursion but was too lazy to take off his backpack and get his rock hammer. so he said “eh, it’s soft enough” just fucking punched the rock until a piece fell off like it was fucking minecraft

The one time you DO have to be careful with your rock samples is when you’re analyzing them for their base/precious metal content. But I guess at that point it’s chemistry, not geology.

For prospecting yeah, you don't want one sample to contaminate another. With pedology you sometimes need to make sure the soil (structures?) are very undisturbed all the way to the lab. But for geology? The sample usually has been outside in the rain being stepped on and much worse for longer than humanity has had control of fire.

ough not a fan At All of this new mobile feature where if you try to screenshot a post it just opens up the share menu with an option to save the post as an image. I wouldn't mind it if the automatically created image of the post looked the same as the screenshot I was trying to take, but the font size of the blog urls and note counts are significantly too large and they put a big ass [tumblr] logo in the corner that also cuts off a lot of some of the urls. I no longer have the option to take normal long screenshots of posts because the share menu immediately pops up and stops me being able to scroll down the post.

Had some app do this to me recently. Maybe uber? Whoever the hell decided all machines must guess at what I'm trying to do and do it for me, can you please go live in a wet hole forever?
