"the manic" by amarante as a duncney song from duncan's point of view. its softer sound being a complete 180 from his appearance and yet fitting him all the same. the female voice as a representation of courtney in his head, reaffirming what he already believes. his regret and his hopelessness taken form, all to the sound of a sweet acoustic guitar. it sounds like trent's type of music, and it makes him feel even shittier.

very much has gay subtext but is also condescending as fuck. not knowing how to talk about your feelings without being somewhat of an asshole. "you're a star in nobody's eyes but mine" being such a surprisingly tender-sounding line despite how brutal it is. knowing how conniving and ruthless the other person is and yet still thinking they're so much better than they really are. "in a car with a girl / promise me she's not your world" which could be worrying about the girl in each relationship due to knowing who the guy is or could be wishing so desperately that he's not already in love with her so that you still have a chance. both being potential winners and leaving their legacies in gold. so much potential here <3
