Part 1
[Part 2]
Daryl Cagle, November 23, 2003
Going to add something here as a few people in the notes don't know the significance of the date here, or think this might be a dig at Sesame Street somehow - on November 18th, 2003, there was an absolutely landmark legal case in the state of Massachusetts that ruled that civil unions in that state needed to be given the same rights as marriage. This was HUGE - gay marriage was not legally recognized in any state at the time, and civil unions were the closest you could get. This is a WONDERFULLY hopeful, sweet comic drawn five whole days after an enormous, major step forward for gay marriage POSSIBLY being legal. Massachusetts wouldn't even properly legalize gay marriage until May 2004, and it was the first state to do so.
You can Google Goodridge v Department of Public Health for more details.

I think one of the reasons drag kings aren’t as popular as drag queens, aside from the fact that straight women don’t like us, is that people are uncomfortable acknowledging masculinity as a performance. Like we as a society know that femininity is a performance, with its own costumes and rules. Masculinity is also a performance, and nothing makes that more clear than someone making an exaggeration of it
To everyone saying that “uh actually it’s cause drag kings aren’t as visually interesting”

Even more :) If you dont see visually interesting and amazing drag kings on your feed you are not paying enough attention, go and find them! Here’s some that I know!
Showponii (from brooklyn, femgay drag king and AMAZING performer!)
The Cakeboys (a drag king collective made of sweaty eddie, senario, muscles monty, and richard!)
Henlo Bullfrog (from philly, also has made costumes for drag race!!)
TJ MAXX! (MUA! Amazing artist too)
KLONDYKE! One of the most amazing performance artists i’ve ever had the pleasure of watching
ZANAX ! Philly and NYC, some of the coolest visuals in drag right now
And that’s that follow more kings on insta thats where the drags all post for event promotion :-))
I'm adding onto this post to give you THROB ZOMBIE, the Horror Himbo (tm), aka my hometown intro to drag. He's pretty big now after coming in 2nd on the Dragula show, but even his early stuff was so creative and weird and interesting (and a big part of my gender coming-out process lol)

In 1988, ACT UP protested the FDA withholding HIV treatment due to requiring unethical double-blind studies of medication they already knew worked.
In 2024, trans activists protested promoters of an NHS-funded report requiring unethical double-blind studies of medication they already knew worked.
October 14, 1977, Anita Bryant is pied for her antigay bigotry at a press conference in Des Moines, IA by Thom Higgins.
She was never taken seriously again.
More public bigots ought to get milkshaked/egged/pied/their shit straight up rocked while on their soapboxes

they should pay you extra if you have to be the only fag in the workplace. they should give you a bonus for that.
i think the whole thing is wonderful
oh my bad! i posted this months ago but i shouldve included what the book is, this was from kate bornstein’s “my gender workbook: how to become a real man, a real woman, the real you, or something else entirely” and it’s also on internet archive where you can borrow it for an hour
you can also download the new edition directly as a pdf here !

My mom decided to weigh in on this, on the side of the Italian boxer, thinking I'd allow her to repeat bullshit talking points for some reason (never have allowed that shit, especially not from someone who raised me not to tolerate racism or anything that ends with someone being put down)...I made her stay on the line until she admitted she was wrong.
I want to clarify, Angela Carini did not quit because she thought her opponent was trans, nor was she "forced" to quit. She quit because the first punch made her nose bleed and she couldn't breathe. She quit due to fear for bodily safety. She did cry and refuse to shake her opponents hand, but it had nothing to do with her gender, she was just upset she was injured and couldn't continue. She later admitted that she had shown poor sportsmanship in refusing to shake her opponents hand, and apologized to her and to everyone, and clarified it had nothing to do with gender, and if the Olympics said she can compete she can compete. Angela Carini is being used by terfs as a scapegoat and is not at fault for anything more than poor sportsmanship.
Dead on. Thanks for adding this. Here's a thread from Threads with more background on Carini.
