I can't reblog this without commentary because it's infuriating.
"Canon" for a TV show is not controlled by the fandom, it's the domain of the people who create the show. You may not like it, but claiming that the creators of that show somehow think it's actually some kind of thought experiment and not the thing they own is kind of delusional.
"But the ships aren't the same size--" It's called writing. It's called special effects. It's called "spaceships aren't real and it's a TV show."
"But the uniforms are a slightly different texture--" So, TV shows have these things called "costume designers" whose job it is to make costumes, you know, for TV shows, that appeal to modern fashion trends. They did not time travel to the 1960s to get the costumes.
"But Spock never talks about a sister--" Tell me you did not actually watch Discovery S2 without saying you ever got that far. Just because you did not watch something does not mean it does not explain something. Is Sybok also not canon now? Because he never mentions Sybok either. Checkmate! Guess the movies aren't canon. /s
I don't understand why the fandom has convinced itself that Star Trek is actually historical documents a la Galaxy Quest and not a TV show.
No, wait, I do: It's because Spock has a Black sister, now. It's because PIC is pro-refugee and asked people to see the Romulans and 21st C. immigrants as people with needs instead of enemies to kill. It's because DISCO and PRO have characters with they/them pronouns, and Trill who discuss gender transition. It's because the people Star Trek asks the fandom to embrace aren't metaphors anymore, and if it's "not canon" you don't have to embrace that message. You don't have to look at the "deconstruction" of the Federation and see a mirror to the US or Europe.
If it's not storytelling, you don't have to ask what the moral of it is.
And this goes for the stuff that's "bad" too!!! Writing the Section 31 movie or PIC/SNW S3 off as non-canon brushes aside the question of "What message are the writers trying to tell with these?" It dodges entirely the question of looking at this franchise and asking what the creators are doing with their power over the legacy of a property like Star Trek.
Stop arguing about whether or not it's canon and start asking yourself what you are going to do with that canon. If you don't like something, make it known. Because the bigots did make it known. They complained about Michael Burnham existing, about Adira and Gray Tal existing, about Jay'Den Kraag and all the other Academy kids existing. And they were heard! And they cancelled their shows!!!!
Sincerely, the fandom needs to stop asking this question. It's all canon!
