just gotta throw my all-time favourite Giles scene into the mix
RIP Anthony Head, a truly generational talent.
Can't believe Farai pulled the parent trick of "Well, you can stay here but we're leaving" on Janity. AND IT WORKED!
Very good "oh, yeah Farai is an experienced parent to multiple children" moment. Risky move, considering Janity seems just a bit too old for that move, but artfully bundled with an edge of older-sibling-guilting to wash it down with.
Doing a slower reread of the Murderbot books and I'm really paying closer attention to how much of an unreliable narrator MB is. And it's fascinating, the way that it is unreliable.
Murderbot repeatedly states that, outside of some specific as shit contexts, it really has a very limited understanding of the universe. That its education modules are crap and frankly far from comprehensive either. And yet? It generally fails to recognise or account for the fact it that it has these massive blind-spots and unfounded biases.
Like, we spend the majority of the books being told again and again just how insanely dangerous rogue SecUnits are. How dangerous they will always be. We are told this by a rogue unit that is, generally, only slightly dangerous to its clients through negligence.
More importantly, Murderbot rarely seems to question some core assumptions even in light of new information. In Artificial Condition we find out that MB has always had a niggling concern that it killed all those people because it disabled its governor modules/disabled the GM in order to kill them all. And what does it find out? That, no, that's not what happened, and that it's probably right that it did hack its GM to ensure that it never happened again.
MB knows that it hacked its GM and then continued protecting clients and doing its job because, well, why not? It fundamentally likes its job, in the sense of it feels a deep and abiding desire to protect humans, to keep them safe. Which makes sense! It's a SecUnit! Of course they're built with not just a shock-collar to keep them in line, but an innate drive to Provide Security. The bits of its job it fundamentally doesn't like are a: when it's made to hurt people who aren't threatening its clients and b: when it's forced to let clients endanger themselves against its judgement.
So what does it do? Does MB reassess its assumption that Rogue Units are of course going to immediately go on a killing spree? Nope! No, it just keeps assuming that it's the likely outcome. It recoils at the very idea of freeing other SecUnits because of that. Because it doesn't seem to understand that it's basing its assumptions on trauma, ironically on trauma that relates to the fact that it fundamentally finds the idea of going on a killing spree horrifying.
And sure, it probably is a minor risk. SecUnits are clearly individuals and there's always going to be some arseholes out there who get free will and immediately go "sweet! Murder Time! gun-arms go pew-pew-pew lol". But, uh, I think it's wildly overestimating the risk factor there.
Which, we see more of how fucking wrong MB is in Network Effect and Platform Decay.
In Network Effect, MB-2.0 frees Three, and what does Three do? We hear its internal thought process and its main driving factor, its default behaviour is "I want to help. I don't know what's going on but I want to Help Protect People". Three does not start blasting every soft, squishy human in range. It tries to get everyone to safety and then volunteers to help rescue someone else. Because it's a SecUnit! That's what SecUnits are made for.
And then we get to Platform Decay, where Three has decided to go on a sightseeing/chaos tour of the Awful Fucking Torus, handing out freedom-code to other SecUnits. And what do we see, from out admittedly limited perspective on events? There are reports of Rogue SecUnits about, panic and fear. But what's missing are reports of Rogue SecUnits actually killing anyone. Not saying that didn't happen, just that uh, the one rogue unit we see isn't hurting anyone, it's just running about (presumably going "oh shit oh shit ohshitohshit what the fuck am I supposed to do now???") and trying to hand out the code to others it meets.
they got married btw
oh youâre not kidding

Something I loved in Platform Decay was the whole thing of "sigils" being, very clearly like, emojis. I can't recall if they're mentioned much before this book, but the way Sofi uses them makes it clear what they really are.
Which makes this reread funny when, a few pages in, I'm hit with this line:
I send Three the schematics highlighted where the potential security personnel were located; it replied with an acknowledgement sigil and an updated map projection.
MB: Vital mission information, potential dangers and schematics.
Three: đ
Rereading the first book and I hit another line that made me go "oh, ffs".
I panic all the time, you just can't see it. I told her. I added the text signifier for "joke".
Not a glyph or a sigil. A "text signifier", which...did Murderbot really just sign off that message with "lol"?
Sofie: But Second Mom says youâre not allowed to shoot people anymore!
Nana Naja: Second Momâs not here right now.
*sends Murderbot an article about the River Nile in Egypt*
(Emotion check: relieved I've got a friend here to help...What? No, no that can't be right. It must be annoyance. Yes.)
I think it would be absolutely hilarious if Three goes with them to Preservation Alliance. Imagine it from the perspective of the other people on the station. First this group goes on a survey mission that goes very wrong, and it eventually leads to there being a rogue SecUnit hanging around openly insulting your security and being a bit of a menace. Then the SecUnit leaves with some of them, gets kidnapped, and has to be rescued by the former leader of the alliance (who, by the way is the one who brought that asshole SecUnit with her in the first place), and then when they return itâs with a whole new rogue SecUnit, this one they basically stole. I can see them being like âwhat are you doing, collecting them.â

Every time I read the Greek Magical Papyri I'm surprised by how common they are. These spells wouldn't be out of place at the average wooy craft fair stand. It makes me wonder how direct the lineage is. Like, when I was handed a spell bag by a wooy woman at a gallery opening, is the construction of that spell influenced by the classical magical milieu? Or is "bag of candles and interesting rocks with a prayer" independently developed multiple times over the course of history?
I think it's reasonable that people can come up with "spell bag" independently. They are produced with readily available objects and materials. But, the conception of a candle as a meaningfully magical object has to be influenced by history right? How could it not be? But then the question is how, and how much?
Interesting. And like, I can at least spitball a through-line that makes some sort of sense I think? Please correct any bits that are totally off because I'm not a historian or whatever.
I assume the candles in modern western magical practice has its roots in the Catholic church, which loves a votive candle. Outside orthodoxy, there's plenty of modern folk Catholic pseudo-magical practices as well that revolve around A Special Candle.
And I guess the Catholic thing probably developed out of a combination of Jewish practices and Roman cultural stuff, which...I do not know what the Romans' deal was with candles and ritualism, but, they cribbed a whole bunch of stuff from the Greeks for sure.
But with the Jewish influences, well there's a lot of candle stuff central to various Jewish rites of course. But also, I think a lot of the early Christians were Hellenised Jews? So I wouldn't be shocked if they were big on Important Candles themselves as part of various religious and magical practices, forming a pretty direct line from "Ancient Greek Magic Candles" to "Modern Western Magic Goody-Bag".
Bi culture TikTok
id: first thing is a tiktok video. The guy in the video says, with maybe a slight texan/southern accent: âI love when people just assume that Iâm straight. Like today, at Taco Bell. I was sitting across from this attractive couple, and Iâm copping looks because I think theyâre cute, but he catches me, and starts giving me dirty looks âcause Iâm lookin at his girl, so I hit him with the olâ [raises his eyebrows, then looks up and down the viewer, and gives a slight smile]. Iâve never seen a man so confused in my life. Iâm sittinâ over here laughinâ like ah-hah-HAH bitch! Nobodyâs safe!â
The next two pictures are from what appears to be from a stand up show, with a young white comedian, who says, âIâm bisexual which means youâre all at risk,â They point to an audience member, âWeâll start with you and work around.â end id]
You listen to music regularly? Why? Have you even tried quitting? Could you quit? You get music stuck in your head? Wow. You're so ruined and music brained. I bet you make your partners listen to music with you when you have sex. Music addiction has really ruined a whole generation. You know it's not realistic to expect reverb in real life, right? You're probably so desensitized that you don't even feel anything anymore when you hear a bird singing that it wants some fuck.
I don't have a problem with people listening to music per se, but I do have a problem with the music industry exploiting & mistreating artists.
Personally, I abstain from all music in order to keep my hands clean but really music should just be illegal outright to protect musicians from abuse.
holy shit this person in the notes
