(animal death) this is a real undoctored photograph (*though the body was stood up for the shot) of a dead flamingo on the surface of lake natron, a lake so salty and so alkaline that it’s naturally carbonated like soda and would eat through your stomach lining if you drank from it.

When this photo went viral years ago, most people assumed this poor flamingo must have been killed by the lake.

The absolutely pervasive mentality that unwanted criticism or critique shouldn't be given and should be ignored is why fans of color don't stay in fan spaces.

And I am not going to mince words here:

A lot of you are racist. A lot of your fan works are racist.

That might have been difficult to hear. And if it was, you should probably reflect on why that was.

"Fandom etiquette" has created a space where fans of color either bite our tongues and eventually leave or say something, get dogged on, and then eventually leave.

What I find masterfully intriguing about his name is how jarring it sounds when it’s all put together. His first name—Jervis—is pronounced with a soft consonant. As with his gentlemanly and refined front, his name phonetically is designed to lull the listener into an impression of an old-world quality. Not only is it representative of his personality and character design, but the name itself was historically used by English nobility, and hence, is associated with that image. He feels compelled to uphold this principle during his interactions with Alice, though evidently out of self-interest.

On the other hand, his surname, Tetch, is firstly a form of wordplay from the adjective “tetchy”, which means to be irritable or bad-tempered. Phonetically, it is characterised as an alveolar plosive. The sound produces a hard consonant created by a sudden, forceful expelling of air to pronounce the sound. It is an auditory dissonance; the soft sounding first name compared with his harsh sounding surname, is rhythmically intended to inspire discomfort. He appears orderly and composed, but residing within the facets of his identity is a dangerous undercurrent.

The irritable facet of his character isn’t immediately noticeable until later in the episode, but the hints are there. As mentioned in a previous analysis post, he displays abrupt bursts of aggression in his introduction to the audience in spite of his considered speech. Examples include slamming his fist on the bench top his lab rats were resting on, and forcefully facing down Alice’s picture frame on her desk out of a jealousy that should have never belonged to him. Small animals are defenceless and at the mercy of its owners. The lack of consideration shown towards his lab rats foreshadows his entitled philosophy, even if he recognised that his feelings were misplaced.

He does these aggressive gestures away from watching eyes not only as a way to release frustration, but also because it makes him feel bigger. Even the picture frame, it’s a “lesser” object that represents what he despises most. Imposing his will on such things is seamless, and it’s suggested that he’s been doing these things for a long time. So when he achieves the goal of forcing his way on previously believed impossible targets of the human brain, of course he succumbs to the temptation soon enough to serve his own interests. He’s been like this beneath the surface for longer than anyone can tell until it boiled over, catalysed by the news of Alice’s supposed terminated relationship with Billy.
