Firstly I use 50s to 80s movies, television and advertising for reference a lot. I like lots of media from that timeframe, so I just naturally did this and now always do 😁 if find their natural faces, grainy quality and bright lighting help me focus on form and not get too caught up in little details. I think I get my colour insp from here a lot too!

Also a good tip is to start in black and white, then colour can come later in your practice. As someone who grew up w comics, I think I did this step accidentally lol, seeing inking and colour are usually seperate. Look up old B&W hollywood portraits with their lovely lighting values and try and emulate them. Start big, get the way the shadows fall ect first. Block that in - then work the details.
