so I don't know much about hacking or programming in general but from the way secunit talks about it, its style of "hacking" is really interesting. it doesn't break anything except as a last resort, and mainly uses its status as a (partial) machine intelligence to build trust with other machine intelligences to get into stuff. code walls are just like locked doors-- if you can convince someone walking in that you work in the building, you can get inside with no fuss. any changes to routine functions are inserted into the normal instruction list, in the system's internal language. the system doesn't have reason to consider whether the instructions are from a hacker, because there's nobody in here that's not supposed to be. secunit is sometimes a visitor politely asking for stuff, sometimes totally an employee, sometimes not even there at all.

I will never be over how excited Rocky was to get Grace's laptop. I mean, if I went on a mission because my planet was dying and then I met an alien who helped me save it and he also gave me the collected knowledge of his species in an advanced little machine, like, he gave that to ME. ALL THE KNOWLEDGE HIS SPECIES HAS GATHERED SO FAR, sure, they don't know how to turn Xenon into a solid but they know about relativity and radiation and movies and so many amazing things I could have never imagined before I went on this trip. And he just handed it to me because we're FRIENDS, I didn't even have to ask him for it, he just did it. Without hesitation. He didn't even tell me "This is for your planet.", he said "This is for you." Like, hello? Can you imagine coming home after decades, your crew is dead, but you made it and you don't just bring the solution for the whole "the planet is dying" thing, you bring the collected knowledge of an advanced alien species?!?!? And it was a personal gift.
