n years later this is still one of my favorite videos
Watching Hornblower after emerging from the Sharpe TV series obsession is crazy, because Hornblower is so gentle and unsure of himself? I'm twenty minutes into the first movie and with all the stuff happening Sharpe would have already stabbed Simpson in the eye for attempting to eat his dinner, decked him if he attempted to make Sharpe dance and the dialogue about death would go like: "What are you thinking about?" "Death." "Whose death?" "Simpson's."
But since I've only watched the Sharpe movies, I wondered what Sharpe in his younger years was like, so I've started reading Sharpe's Tiger. Apparently the bastard marched into his first real battle not having any fcking clue what he was doing but radiating enough confidence to make one of the officers feel more at ease about the upcoming fight. Sharpe and Hornblower are at the opposite ends of the "crazy bastard" spectrum.
Sean Bean had to die in so many films because he used up all his lives in Sharpe's Fortress specifically

Homemaking, gardening, and self-sufficiency resources that won't radicalize you into a hate group
It seems like self-sufficiency and homemaking skills are blowing up right now. With the COVID-19 pandemic and the current economic crisis, a lot of folks, especially young people, are looking to develop skills that will help them be a little bit less dependent on our consumerist economy. And I think that's generally a good thing. I think more of us should know how to cook a meal from scratch, grow our own vegetables, and mend our own clothes. Those are good skills to have.
Unfortunately, these "self-sufficiency" skills are often used as a recruiting tactic by white supremacists, TERFs, and other hate groups. They become a way to reconnect to or relive the "good old days," a romanticized (false) past before modern society and civil rights. And for a lot of people, these skills are inseparably connected to their politics and may even be used as a tool to indoctrinate new people.
In the spirit of building safe communities, here's a complete list of the safe resources I've found for learning homemaking, gardening, and related skills. Safe for me means queer- and trans-friendly, inclusive of different races and cultures, does not contain Christian preaching, and does not contain white supremacist or TERF dog whistles.
Homemaking/Housekeeping/Caring for your home:
Making It by Kelly Coyne and Erik Knutzen [book] (The big crunchy household DIY book; includes every level of self-sufficiency from making your own toothpaste and laundry soap to setting up raised beds to butchering a chicken. Authors are explicitly left-leaning.)
Safe and Sound: A Renter-Friendly Guide to Home Repair by Mercury Stardust [book] (A guide to simple home repair tasks, written with rentals in mind; very compassionate and accessible language.)
How To Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis [book] (The book about cleaning and housework for people who get overwhelmed by cleaning and housework, based on the premise that messiness is not a moral failing; disability and neurodivergence friendly; genuinely changed how I approach cleaning tasks.)
Gardening
Rebel Gardening by Alessandro Vitale [book] (Really great introduction to urban gardening; explicitly discusses renter-friendly garden designs in small spaces; lots of DIY solutions using recycled materials; note that the author lives in England, so check if plants are invasive in your area before putting them in the ground.)
Country/Rural Living:
Woodsqueer by Gretchen Legler [book] (Memoir of a lesbian who lives and works on a rural farm in Maine with her wife; does a good job of showing what it's like to be queer in a rural space; CW for mentions of domestic violence, infidelity/cheating, and internalized homophobia)
"Debunking the Off-Grid Fantasy" by Maggie Mae Fish [video essay] (Deconstructs the off-grid lifestyle and the myth of self-reliance)
Sewing/Mending:
Annika Victoria [YouTube channel] (No longer active, but their videos are still a great resource for anyone learning to sew; check out the beginner project playlist to start. This is where I learned a lot of what I know about sewing.)
Make, Sew, and Mend by Bernadette Banner [book] (A very thorough written introduction to hand-sewing, written by a clothing historian; lots of fun garment history facts; explicitly inclusive of BIPOC, queer, and trans sewists.)
Sustainability/Land Stewardship
Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer [book] (Most of you have probably already read this one or had it recommended to you, but it really is that good; excellent example of how traditional animist beliefs -- in this case, indigenous American beliefs -- can exist in healthy symbiosis with science; more philosophy than how-to, but a great foundational resource.)
Wild Witchcraft by Rebecca Beyer [book] (This one is for my fellow witches; one of my favorite witchcraft books, and an excellent example of a place-based practice deeply rooted in the land.)
Avoiding the "Crunchy to Alt Right Pipeline"
Note: the "crunchy to alt-right pipeline" is a term used to describe how white supremacists and other far right groups use "crunchy" spaces (i.e., spaces dedicated to farming, homemaking, alternative medicine, simple living/slow living, etc.) to recruit and indoctrinate people into their movements. Knowing how this recruitment works can help you recognize it when you do encounter it and avoid being influenced by it.
"The Crunchy-to-Alt-Right Pipeline" by Kathleen Belew [magazine article] (Good, short introduction to this issue and its history.)
Sisters in Hate by Seyward Darby (I feel like I need to give a content warning: this book contains explicit descriptions of racism, white supremacy, and Neo Nazis, and it's a very difficult read, but it really is a great, in-depth breakdown of the role women play in the alt-right; also explicitly addresses the crunchy to alt-right pipeline.)
These are just the resources I've personally found helpful, so if anyone else has any they want to add, please, please do!
ancient greek word of the day: κακοθερής (kakotherēs), unfitted to endure summer heat
this literally means “bad at summer” pass it on

How do you preserve the food from your garden so it doesn't go bad before you can eat it?
You are wildly underestimating my ability to go fucking feral about fresh produce. I don't think I even brought snap peas into the house last year. Just ate them right off the vine.
Though I did end up freezing the strawberries/blue berries as they ripened, but even those were consumed within the week.
The only tough one was the potatoes, but that was resolved by just foisting potatoes on everyone I knew. Much more welcome than Zucchinis.
Oh this is why every gardening person I know keeps trying to give me the food they grow
That, and we love you. Homegrown produce is a love language.
Unless it's zucchini. Then it's a cry for help.
Tomato (June) - I think highly of you; treasured friend
Tomato (September) - you are a warm body that is nearby
Fresh new asparagus - romantic love
Artichoke - fondness
New rhubarb with leaves removed - flirtatious potential
Rhubarb with leaves left on - the bloom is gone
Swiss chard - I have made mistakes
Perpetual spinach - declaration of animosity between our houses
White-fleshed potato - you are a neighbor
Blue or red fleshed potato - as above, but with overtones of camaraderie/affection
Kale - you are a person who was nearby when I had kale
Raspberries - you are a person I admire
Strawberries - you are a treasure
Onion - I am confused
Young French beans or young peas - I thought of you especially
Runner beans - mild criticism; familial ties; gift from parent to child
Pumpkins - overt romantic, sexual or childhood-bestie interest; highest declaration of loyalty
Prettily coloured popping corn, I.e. glass gem - let this seal the breach between our houses
Zucchini/courgette - cry for help, resignation
Novelty pumpkins - marriage proposal

🚨‼️ 🚨‼️ Regularly scheduled nonsense posts about tv and clothes and silliness hav been temporarily delayed due to UK fuckery. 🚨‼️🚨‼️
If you are based in the UK, please watch this video. This is in regards to the UK's plan "Watch this space: a new strategic direction for UK media"
In short, because the viewings for state-run BBC and consumption of BBC-news are declining, the UK is attempting to control other media sources such as Tik-Tok and Youtube, and force the other platforms to give priority (exclusive?) content that is state-approved material, with primary focus on UK-based content.
You can see a run-down on their priorities on this post. (Image from that link)
This is connected to the debate on "The future of terrestrial television," a government initiative to improve terrestrial television and internet access. They even promise a "universal free service to deliver live TV over broadband." They're mad that people have stopped watching BBC, so they're trying to install an IP-switchover to deliver content.
Okay, that doesn't sound too bad... trojan horses never do seem that bad. In exchange for delivering access to all this terrestrial-- read, BRITISH-- content through your internet, they're aiming for complete control over your consumption online. This is why they're considering banning VPNs in the UK. They want to ensure that the content you have access to is British content, and state-approved at that.
So they want to control your access on television and broadband, and now they're demanding control from other platforms what you are and are not allowed to access on platforms like youtube and tik-tok.
Considering how much fuckery we've seen from this government, I would not be shocked in the slightest if all the sudden, any and all access to external media-- say, for example, a video of John Oliver criticising the UK government-- is erased once they have control of our tv and our broadband.
This is 1984 shit. If you haven't been paying attention to what the fuckers are up to, you really need to start paying attention. Because everything this government is doing is insidious-- I'm now officially far more unsafe under the Labour government than I ever was under the Tories-- and I sure as hell was not safe under the Tories.
This is all packaged in 'we want to make the UK more accessible, we want to make sure rural areas have internet, we want to make sure the information you access is accurate. And we want to make sure the content you get is British. (ie, we will control the narrative). Our definition of what is acceptable and British (ie, cis het white British).
They just banned social media for 16s-- "protect the children." On the surface, this sounds understandable, cos social media is poison.
But what that means is that in order to prove that you're not under 16, you have to hand over your government identification so the government can link it to your social media.
Which also means they can very easily watch and access anything you do, and PROVE that it's you if you say something they don't like-- such as TRANS WOMEN ARE WOMEN.
These are the same fuckers who are trying to ban wikipedia.
There is a Qualtrics survey for the "new Strategic direction for the UK" where you can tell them if you think this 1984 shit is acceptable. Please note, a lot of the questions are carefully set up with a lot of propaganised language. For example, this is a question trying to get you to say that you want to find British (nationalised) content on youtube and tiktok and other streaming platforms and that British content should be your priority for access. They don't even give you an option to write in on this question to say whether or not British content is a priority for you. They want you to say that you have a difficult time finding this material so they can go back to the other platforms and tell them to prioritise the state-approved media.
Question 22. How easy or difficult is it for you to find culturally relevant content on video platforms, including video sharing platforms like YouTube and TikTok and streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video? Examples of culturally relevant content could include stories set in Britain, with British presenters, representing British values or referencing British events or customs.
Options: *Very easy - I have no issues in finding culturally relevant content on these platforms *Somewhat easy - I have very few issues in finding culturally relevant content on these platforms *Neither easy nor difficult - no opinion either way *Somewhat difficult - I have some issues in finding culturally relevant content on these platforms *Very difficult - I have a lot of issues in finding culturally relevant content on these platforms *Not sure
So If you do the qualtrics form (which, please do because we need to tell them this is some Orwellian bullshit), please read each question very carefully.
If they get enough people filling out the qualtrics forms saying that we're not okay with this shit, they will have a more difficult time justifying pushing this shit through.
If you do the survey, this website might be helpful to read u and answer the questions on the television and internet access questions. And this site for information on the "Watch this Space" questions.
Okay, I'm tired of talking about all of this now, but these are really actually HUGE deals that will affect every single internet and tv user in the UK. So if you're not paying attention to all of this, I understand why but if you don't, things are going to get so much darker, so much sooner. Please forward this to anyone in the UK or people who are politically minded who can highlight things like this.
🚨‼️ 🚨‼️ The UK is turning further and further right-- and not just conservative annoying right-- properly fascist nightmare. So I know it takes a LOT of emotional energy and exhaustion, but if we don't fight this now, there will be no way to fight it once these are installed laws. 🚨‼️🚨‼️
We now return to regularly scheduled nonsense posts about tv and clothes and silliness.
