Introduction Post: Tristan Finally Tries Organising His Blog. Friends and Mutuals Alike "Shocked", "Suspicious", "Afraid He Has Become A Victim Of Possession"
(Riders of the Sidhe, John Duncan)
Hello! I'm Tristan and I write a bunch of Anderperry (usually Todd-centric) fic when the time allows for it (which isn't often)! Relevant links below.
(I may reblog things which are NSFW, have nudity, etc. If that isn't your thing, please look elsewhere 🫡)
My AO3
#tristan writes - fics, snippets, a weekly WIP Wednesday, and anything else that comes to mind
#dead poets society - dps posts. I will not lie, this is mostly posts from my writing tag.
#tristan's travelling library - excerpts I find compelling from whatever book I'm currently reading
(This is by no means a solely DPS blog, but since I pretty much only write DPS fic that's what this intro post is geared towards. The knight divider is courtesy of @sweetmelodygraphics.)
Current WIPs are:
The Valley of the White Horse (working title) - an AU based off of The Little White Horse. Younger in nature, set in 1802. Todd as a young orphan-in-all-but-name sent to live with distant cousin John Keating, discovering family secrets and repairing village rifts along the way. Low fantasy, cosy pastoral setting, slight pastiche of Regency literature (think paragraphs-long digressions which are just descriptions of food).
The Eremite - a series of vignettes spanning four decades of the life of mathematician Todd Anderson, as he falls in and out of love with two men, solitude, and an unproven theorem.
Leading Lines - The Secret Life of Walter Mitty! AU. Neil as a famous photojournalist and Todd as his introverted point-of-contact and maladaptive daydreamer, who winds up having to break out of his shell and chase him across the world to find a missing negative.
The Grail Triptych - another AU meant to evoke a particular brand of 20th century British children's fantasy; this time specifically the The Dark is Rising sequence, by Susan Cooper. A convalescent's holiday in the West Country for schoolboys Todd, Charlie, and Meeks spins out of control when they discover a mysterious map. With the help of Charlie's mysterious Great-Uncle John, they must find the treasure to which it leads - easier said than done with strange magical forces conspiring against them, a foreboding new neighbour watching their every move, and something not quite there about Todd...
If any of these sound interesting to you - stick around! I'm working on them very slowly (The Valley of the White Horse, at the moment). In the meantime, asks are welcome, and if you want to request an Anderperry drabble, feel free! Just understand that there will probably be a turnaround of up to several months on that. Also, no NSFW requests, thanks.

you're nineteen or twenty years old sitting in your stupid red audi in the national park lot at eleven pee em on a tuesday when you meet a hoon bodhisattva in an old v8 bmw a carhat if you will she is doing inscrutable maneuver drills she won't explain why but she tells you to learn to drive backwards she reverses out of the lot and drives off into the night you think about this for the rest of your life
you're nineteen or twenty years old pulling into the national park lot in your stupid red audi and that bmw is there again but this time it's slithering through a long line of little orange cones so you give it a try but even with your backup camera it's slow so you pull up next to the bmw and the hoon bodhisattva rolls her window down I remember you you say how the fuck are doing that you say stop thinking about it she tells you cover the camera and use your mirrors she tells you half an hour later she drives off backwards into the night again but now you're more or less sure you didn't imagine it before
It's always gratifying to learn new things while researching a novel, and deepening my knowledge of the natural world is great and all, but I am learning way too much about the mating habits of various animals and to be honest, I'm not sure I want to know.

hiiii! i just adore your writing style, and I am currently writing my own fic and was wondering if you could possibly explain like /how/ you write. But I am reasonably new to writing and I seem to just write: "He did this, doing this" in a way... or if you could just give me some writing tips in general that would be amazing ^^ if this is too big of an ask thats alright thank youu!
Thanks anon for this lovely ask :) congratulations on becoming a writer, this is so exciting! In terms of how I write I tend to just talk some ideas out to myself, then write down a framework (timeline/story plan/etc.), then build around that framework. I tend to write top to bottom as well, I don't skip around different parts of stories. And I edit as I go so I don't normally progress beyond a "first" draft. But don't copy this method without thinking, try lots of different ways of structuring your stories and writing them down!!
I would say that if you're struggling with "they [did] this, [did] that," reconsidering the action from different perspectives could be helpful. This also lends itself to fun sentences. i.e., somebody pulls out a chair. Think of what happens during this; the chair moves backwards, maybe it tilts, maybe the carpet snags a bit underneath the chair legs. Also, what emotions are involved, how does the person pulling out the chair feel right now, why are they pulling out the chair at all? From this you can get a much more interesting version of "He pulled out a chair", "The chair jumped backwards in his hands", "The carpet snagged. He cursed under his breath before wresting the chair back fully". BUT ALSO sometimes just write "He pulled out a chair". "said", "did", "walked", etc. are beautiful words and not as boring as they are reputed to be.
Lastly I only have one writing tip for you! Read lots of things! Pick out sentences you like and try to figure out why they're so good! Dissect the way your favourite authors write and understand what they're doing with their verbs and adjectives and adverbs and sentence structure. Cherrypick the bits you like and assemble the resulting hodgepodge into your own style. This is ridiculously good fun and also very common advice, but it is common because IT WORKS. Learn to love words before you use them!
Hopefully this advice helps, if you want me to elaborate on anything just send me another ask. Good luck with your fic!! If you would like to, drop it in my inbox when it's finished, I'd like to give it a read :)
🙄 you build ONE funerary complex with 8000 life-sized statues of soldiers, horses and generals and suddenly you’re “the terracotta army guy.” 🙄 execution.
