We had a conversation in the morning, I can't remember what led to it but I ended up explaining what a mitzvah was.

Later in the day, he was talking about why he hated religion. I mentioned how all of his gripes are with Christianity, and that judaism differs. And he agreed with me and referred back to our convo in the morning about mitzvahs, saying he liked the idea of them.

Whilst i didn't push it further, it finally gave me a jump off point for a post I've been wanting to make for a while but have been unable to fully articulate.

I do want to be clear, if you tried Christianity and it didn't work for you, and you immediately went to atheism, that's perfectly okay. I do not think you have to try every religion before atheism. If you were raised atheist or only tried one religion before atheism, there is no issue with that. I am glad you found something that works for you.

What i am specifically talking about is when people talk about Christian concepts and frame it like all religions, or even the majority of religions share the concept, so that's why they dislike religion or religion isn't for them.

And the specific part which is the issue for me, is the framing of the Christian concept as being a concept present in all if not most religions.

If you have a gripe with a Christian concept, your gripe is with Christianity. If you have a gripe with a Jewish concept, your gripe is with judaism. If you have a gripe with a Buddhist concept, your gripe is with Buddhism.

Not all religions are the same, and treating Christianity as the default religion when it comes to speaking about religion in a general sense, does annoy me.

Because when you say "I dislike how religion has (insert christian concept)" you are implying that I, a jew, also believe that Christian concept due to me being religious.

And since this is the webbed site of pissing on the poor I do want to be clear again. This is not saying you cannot criticize religion, you can. All I am asking is that you appropriately label your criticism instead of implying I believe something that I don't, as thats how you spread misinformation about non-Christian religions.

All evil whales are, well, evil. So evil that if you speak their name at sea, they will hear it and home in on you. So instead you use all sorts of euphemisms for their names. Also if you try to cook their meat it literally disappears from the pot. That’s right, they’re so evil, you can’t even eat them.

They include such types as the hrosshvalur (horsewhale), with big eyes and a red mane and tail. This is probably the best known and most feared of the lot.

The raudkembingur (redcomb) is especially cruel and bloodthirsty even by illhveli standards. If you manage to escape it, it will die of frustration.

Good luck escaping the mushveli (mousewhale) though, it has legs! And will clamber onto the beach in pursuit!

Or what about death from above? The stökkull (jumper) leaps high into the air and pile-drives boats to pieces.

Meanwhile the skeljungur (shellwhale) sits in the path of boats and lets them get wrecked on its shelly hide…

… while the sverdhvalur (swordwhale) slices through boats with its dorsal fin.

The katthveli (catwhale) is relatively harmless though. It meows.

The same can’t be said of the lyngbakur (heatherback), a classic island fish that lets sailors get on its back and then dives, taking them to a watery grave.

The nauthveli (oxwhale) on the other hand specially targets cattle, attracting them into the sea with its bellow before tearing them apart.

How can you avoid all these murderous whales, like the taumafiskur (bridlefish) here? Any of a number of ways, including getting a steypireydur to help. There are substances, ranging from angelica to sheep dung and chopped fox testicles, that they find abhorrent. And you can distract them with loud noises and barrels.
