Grace sends this off as a "fuck you" to Stratt and unintentionally eases 40+ years of crippling guilt.

(40+ factoring in the Hail Mary mission, then the time it would take to get back to Erid and the time it would take for the message to get to Earth. Probably closer to 50+ actually).

(I do think Stratt felt bad. She did a lot of terrible things to save the planet, and obviously felt guilt for sending Grace off. I imagine the time waiting to hear back from the Hail Mary was torture for everyone, but she essentially sent three people off to their deaths, one unwillingly. Hearing that Grace made it out alive would be a huge weight off her shoulders.)

One of the compelling things about Project Hail Mary is that you can't fix it.

"What if Stratt didn't force Grace to go?" Then the Earth dies.

"What if Yao and Ilyukhina had survived?" Then they all would have died in space, not enough food to get to Earth or Erid

If the Taomoeba hadn't escaped then Grace would have never seen his best friend again. Returning to a world he loves but no longer recognizes.

If the stars weren't dying then Grace never would have met his best friend at all. Living content but alone.

Project Hail Mary is a hopeful story. It is a story of friendship and what it means to be brave. It's a story about saving the world.

But you can't remove the tragedy of the story without making it unrecognizable. It's written into the bones.

#I am glad some has used tragedy to describe it #epic tragedy has come to mind a few times but I am lacking in literary studies and so wasn't sure how well it fit #Maybe it is set up to be a tragedy but the characters are determined to not let it be so?#at least where the other is involved? Been thinking about the Grace go home scene in the movie and the bit about 'I thought you made peace?' and Grace's response of 'That's just something you say' and can't help but wonder how much of the recordings he send back to earth when he says he's going after Rocky are him trying to appear composed while he's actually just trying not to thing about how after all that, he's never going to see earth again anyways.

Wondering if it would be a bit like he pushes the never seeing earth again emotions to the side while on the journey to Erid because he has the job of getting Rocky and the Taumeba there, but once he's there and that job's done, it all just sort of hits him...

I’ve never seen a kid struggle with the concepts of someone being gay, trans, or nonbinary.

I did once have to explain to an almost 3 year old why a chihuahua wasn’t a cat and let me tell you THAT was a struggle and the kid was very mad about it.
