Requested: yes by anonymous; Kelly Severide x Sister!Reader where Kelly is working with OFI for a little while so the reader is covering for him as lieutenant on squad (which she has done many times before) and one day after shift they meet up at Molly’s just to hang out and he starts asking questions and making suggestions and basically trying to be a backseat driver. It was nearing the end of another solid shift. Kelly was away working at OFI so you had stepped in and became interim squad lieutenant, a job you’ve done plenty of times before. It’s as if being on squad ran through the Severide bloodline. Being on squad was like a breeze during the summertime, you absolutely loved it, especially when you got the chance to take over as lieutenant. You had proved yourself time and time again that you were perfect for the position, it worked even better whenever you got to show a bunch of sexist pigs from other firehouses that you could do their jobs leagues better than they ever could.
However, there was always one small problem. That problem being Kelly. Now it wasn’t like he didn’t believe that you would do a great job, he honestly thought you were a better lieutenant than he was at times. But with him being your older brother came with a lot of backseat driving. Although it always came from a place of wanting to give you advice it couldn’t help but sound like he didn’t trust that you could make the right decisions out in the field. Which was quite the opposite of what he thought, but there was always a little voice in the back of your head nagging that you weren’t and would never be good enough. No matter how much confidence you had in yourself you couldn’t get that little voice to shut the hell up.
Later that night you and Kelly had met up at Molly’s for your usual round of drinks. Since he now had a less soot-involved job he had shown up before you, already ordering your drinks. You had walked in, fresh from a shower and in a new pair of clothes that didn’t reek of smoke, unlike your uniform.
“Hey, I got you your usual.” Kelly greeted sliding the glass toward you.
“Why thank you, big brother.” You gratefully took the glass and took a seat on the stool.
“How’s work, Cruz get on your nerves yet?” Kelly asked as he took a sip of his beer.
“No, not yet. I think he’s actually more scared of me than he is of you.” You smiled widely.
“Seriously?” Kelly furrowed his brows.
“You should’ve seen his face when he had to organize the truck earlier. It was pure gold.” You laughed at the memory.
“You’re gonna need to teach me then.” Kelly said.
“Why would I? It’s funnier when only I can do it.” You smirked, making Kelly roll his eyes at you.
“Any interesting calls today?” Kelly asked.
“Yeah, there was this one call, I had to rappel down the side of the building because the ladder wasn’t tall enough.” You nodded your head.
“You remember BRAKES?” Kelly questioned.
“Yes Kelly, you forget that I’m usually the one rappelling in squad.” You rolled your eyes.
“I know, I just want to make sure that you're being safe.” Kelly explained.
“Yeah, yeah, for once in your life just trust that I can do this job without you trying to backseat drive. If I need any advice, who else would I go to ask anyway besides you?” You sighed inwardly.
“I do, I swear. I guess I need to stop acting like an overprotective brother on certain things.” Kelly nodded.
“Yeah, namely my job.” You scoffed.
“I’m sorry.” Kelly apologized.
“I know you are, just at least be more self-aware sometimes.” You laughed.
“Me? Self-aware? Never.” Kelly joked.
“Tell me about it. I had to tell you time and time again to just ask Stella out only for you to ignore every piece of advice I have ever given you.” You raised your brows.
“I’m not sorry for that. I still got the girl anyway.” Kelly shrugged.
“After some trials and tribulations, that’s for sure.” You reminded him as you took a sip from your drink.
“Call it ‘experience’ if you will.” Kelly argued.
“Sure, we’ll go with that.” You nodded unconvinced to which Kelly pulled a face at.
