From the very beginning, Roscoe wasn’t just a dog. He was a heartbeat at Lewis’s side, a warmth that grounded him in a world that spun far too fast. Born into Lewis’s arms as a bundle of velvet fur and clumsy paws.
Roscoe grew up with the steady hum of engines in the background and the soft rhythm of Lewis’s laughter guiding him.
When you came into Lewis’s life, Roscoe was already a legend in his world.
The first time you met him, he barked once, then pressed his wet nose into your palm like he already knew.
Lewis had looked nervous like his best friend’s approval mattered more than anything else and when Roscoe licked your hand, Lewis’s shoulders relaxed.
Later, he admitted in a whisper,
“I think Roscoe loves you. That’s the highest stamp of approval I could ever give.”
From then on, Roscoe was everywhere.
The first night you stayed over, he sprawled between you both on the bed, snoring like he had every right to the middle spot.
He was there when you moved in together, dragging his toys from room to room until the house truly felt like a home.
He was there when you and Lewis had your first real fight voices sharp, your tears heavy.
Roscoe had nudged his head into your lap, whining softly until your hands stilled in his fur, until Lewis’s anger melted into silence.
The three of you ended up curled on the couch, tangled together in forgiveness.
When Lewis proposed, Roscoe was wearing a little bowtie, tail wagging furiously like he knew something important was about to happen.
On your wedding day, he was the proudest ring bearer in the world, trotting down the aisle with his head high, carrying your forever in a velvet pouch. The photos still hung on your wall Roscoe grinning wide, tongue lolling out as if even he knew he was part of something eternal.
But Roscoe wasn’t just there for the good moments.
He was there the night you lost your first pregnancy, when your world broke apart in silence. You had crumpled in bed, body shaking with sobs you couldn’t control, and Roscoe had climbed up beside you, pressing his weight into your side, resting his head on your stomach like he could shield you from the pain.
Lewis had held you, tears in his own eyes, but it was Roscoe’s steady, grounding warmth that carried you through the darkest night.
Through it all, Coco had been there too her bright eyes, her soft presence, the way she made Roscoe come alive with joy whenever they played.
Losing her was brutal.
Her death tore open something in Lewis he couldn’t put into words.
You’d held him as he cried into your shoulder, whispering, “It’s not fair. They’re supposed to be with us forever.”
And though Roscoe helped soften that grief, her absence never stopped stinging.
Years passed, and Roscoe grew older.
His muzzle turned silver, his body slowed, but he was still Roscoe still padding after Lewis, still curling up beside you, still the center of so much love.
Until, one morning, the house felt too quiet. Roscoe’s breaths were shallow, his eyes tired.
Then came the day everything fell apart .
The vet’s office blurred through tears as Lewis carried him in, his arms trembling.
Roscoe slipped into a coma, his heartbeat faint. The vet’s voice was gentle, but the truth was brutal.
The decision broke Lewis.
He cradled Roscoe close, whispering, “You were with me through everything.
Thank you for loving us.
Thank you for loving her.
You’ll always be my boy.”
You held Roscoe’s paw, stroking his fur, whispering his name and when the injection came, you both felt it the slowing, the stillness, the end.
Lewis didn’t let go for a long time.
He pressed his forehead to Roscoe’s, tears falling freely.
“First Coco… now Roscoe. How do we keep going without them?” he whispered, voice shattered.
Walking out of the vet’s office gutted you both. Lewis held only Roscoe’s leash, the clip swinging loosely, no dog at the end of it.
The silence in the car ride was suffocating at home, the emptiness hit like a tidal wave.
His food bowls still sat in the corner, water untouched.
His toys lay scattered on the rug, waiting for paws that would never return.
His bed still held the indent of his body, his scent lingering like a ghost.
The house felt wrong without him.
Too quiet.
Too still.
That night, you and Lewis sat on the floor beside Roscoe’s empty bed, holding each other in the silence.
The grief was raw, unrelenting, but beneath it was something else: gratitude.
For the years you had, for the love he gave, for the way he had been there through it all.
Roscoe Hamilton.
Beloved boy.
Loyal companion.
Gentle soul.
He had been part of every moment, every triumph, every heartbreak and though his paws would no longer pad across the floor, his presence remained eternal, untouchable, and forever stitched into the story of your lives.
Tobin recounts how she played wingwoman for Y/N and Christen on the ReCap show.
Episode 47: "When Your Co-Host is Also Your Wingwoman"
TOBIN: settling into her chair with a mischievous grin Welcome back to The Recap Show! I'm Tobin Heath, your favorite chaos agent—
CHRISTEN: laughing And I'm Christen Press, the one who has to keep her grounded in reality.
TOBIN: Today we have a very special guest who might be familiar to some of you... dramatic pause My greatest masterpiece!
Y/N: walking onto set looking resigned Do I get any say in how this goes?
TOBIN: immediately Absolutely not. Sit down right there next to Christen. Perfect. to camera Folks, meet Y/N, midfielder for Angel City FC, USWNT player, my personal success story, and most importantly, the love of my co-host's life!
CHRISTEN: blushing Tobin!
Y/N: settling next to Christen She's been planning this ambush for months, hasn't she?
CHRISTEN: She has a whole folder labeled "Operation Love Birds" on her laptop.
TOBIN: Research! It's called research! Now, for our viewers who don't know the full story, Y/N and Christen have been together for eight wonderful months, but their love story spans years. Y/N, tell us about college.
Y/N: glancing at Christen Well, we went to different schools but played against each other pretty regularly. Christen was at Stanford, I was at UCLA—
CHRISTEN: You were so intense during those games. Like, scary focused.
Y/N: I was trying to survive! You were this legendary forward everyone talked about. "Watch out for Christen Press, she'll destroy your defense." And you did, repeatedly.
CHRISTEN: grinning Remember that game junior year where I scored three goals?
Y/N: How could I forget? You were unstoppable. But I got one back on you that game.
CHRISTEN: eyes lighting up That shot from outside the box! It was beautiful. I remember thinking, "Okay, she's really good."
Y/N: You remember that?
CHRISTEN: Of course I remember. It was the first time I really noticed you as more than just another opponent.
TOBIN: interrupting Okay, this is sweet, but we're missing the important part. Y/N, tell them about your massive crush.
Y/N: covering face Oh my god, Tobin.
CHRISTEN: turning to look at Y/N Wait, you had a crush on me in college?
Y/N: muffled through hands The biggest crush. Like, embarrassingly huge.
TOBIN: Tell her about the interviews!
Y/N: reluctantly Whenever reporters asked about upcoming games, if we were playing Stanford, I'd always mention how good their forward line was, but really I just wanted an excuse to talk about you.
CHRISTEN: melting That's so sweet! I had no idea.
TOBIN: She was not subtle. I watched old game footage - Y/N would find excuses to talk to you after matches.
Y/N: I was trying to be friendly!
CHRISTEN: You were always so nice. I loved those conversations.
TOBIN: But then! Life happened, you both went pro, different teams, different paths. Fast forward to 2023 - Angel City FC.
Y/N: Right, so I transferred to Angel City, and suddenly Christen Press is my teammate. Dream come true and absolute nightmare at the same time.
CHRISTEN: Why nightmare?
Y/N: Because now I have to see you every day and pretend I'm not completely gone for you! Do you know how hard it is to focus on drills when you're standing right there?
TOBIN: to Christen She used to get to practice thirty minutes early just to watch you warm up.
CHRISTEN: gasping You did not!
Y/N: mortified Tobin!
TOBIN: She absolutely did. I caught her multiple times just... watching. Like a lovesick puppy.
CHRISTEN: taking Y/N's hand That's actually really cute.
Y/N: I told myself I was studying your technique.
CHRISTEN: laughing Sure you were.
TOBIN: And then there was the carpooling situation.
Y/N: Oh no, we're really going there?
TOBIN: We absolutely are. Christen, did you know Y/N volunteered to drive you to practice every day?
CHRISTEN: She offered! I thought she was just being nice.
TOBIN: to Y/N Tell her about the playlists.
Y/N: groaning I made specific playlists for our car rides. Different ones based on your mood.
CHRISTEN: eyes widening The music was always perfect! I wondered how you always knew exactly what I needed to hear.
Y/N: I paid attention. If you seemed stressed, I'd play more chill stuff. If you were excited about a game, more upbeat songs. If you looked sad... I had a comfort playlist.
CHRISTEN: squeezing Y/N's hand That's the sweetest thing ever.
TOBIN: wiping fake tears But wait, there's more! Y/N, what about the coffee situation?
Y/N: to Tobin Do you have to expose everything?
TOBIN: to camera She memorized Christen's coffee order from every place near the training facility.
CHRISTEN: looking at Y/N in amazement You always knew exactly what I wanted.
Y/N: Oat milk cortado with an extra shot and a dash of cinnamon from Blue Bottle. Vanilla latte with almond milk from Starbucks. Regular coffee with cream and two sugars from that little place on Melrose—
CHRISTEN: interrupting You really did memorize them all.
TOBIN: And she'd always have your favorite ready when you were having a bad day.
Y/N: I just... wanted to take care of you.
CHRISTEN: melting You did. You always did, and I thought you were just being an amazing friend.
TOBIN: Speaking of being oblivious! Christen, your turn. Tell us about your side of this disaster.
CHRISTEN: laughing I was equally hopeless! I had such a crush on her, but I convinced myself there was no way she was interested.
Y/N: incredulous You had a crush on me?
CHRISTEN: Are you kidding? You're brilliant and funny and kind, and you have this way of making everyone around you feel special.
TOBIN: to Y/N She used to talk about you constantly.
CHRISTEN: Tobin!
TOBIN: to audience "Y/N said the funniest thing today." "Y/N helped me with this drill." "Y/N brought me coffee again, isn't she thoughtful?"
Y/N: Really?
CHRISTEN: blushing Really. I looked forward to our car rides more than anything. And when you'd text me funny memes or check in after tough games... it made my whole day.
TOBIN: Now, this is where I entered the picture. I transferred to Angel City in March, and within one week - ONE WEEK - I had the full situation figured out.
Y/N: She's like a relationship detective.
TOBIN: It was so obvious! You two were having these long conversations after practice, always finding excuses to partner up during drills, sharing inside jokes...
CHRISTEN: We were being subtle!
TOBIN: snorting Subtle? Y/N once walked into a wall because she was too busy watching you during a team meeting.
Y/N: mortified That wall came out of nowhere!
CHRISTEN: giggling I remember that! You said you were "thinking about tactics."
Y/N: I was thinking about tactics! Specifically, tactics for asking you out, but still.
TOBIN: So naturally, I had to intervene. Operation Love Birds was born.
CHRISTEN: Wait, you actually called it that?
TOBIN: proudly I had a whole strategic plan. Phase One: Create opportunities for alone time.
Y/N: The mysterious emergencies.
TOBIN: dramatically "Oh no, I can't make team dinner tonight, food poisoning!" "My car broke down, you two go ahead!" "I have to stay late and work on... uh... important stuff!"
CHRISTEN: realization dawning You faked food poisoning three times!
TOBIN: And it worked! You two had so many "accidental" dinner dates.
Y/N: I started to get suspicious when you kept having emergencies right when we made plans.
TOBIN: Phase Two: Workplace manipulation.
CHRISTEN: warily What did you do?
TOBIN: I convinced Coach that you two had incredible chemistry and should be paired for every drill possible.
Y/N: "They read each other so well on the field, Coach."
TOBIN: Which was true! But also gave you constant excuses to be close to each other. Win-win.
CHRISTEN: to Y/N That's why we were always partners?
Y/N: I thought Coach just liked our playing style together.
TOBIN: Your playing style, your longing stares, same thing.
CHRISTEN: We did not have longing stares!
TOBIN: to camera They absolutely had longing stares. I have photo evidence.
Y/N: You took photos?
TOBIN: Research documentation! Anyway, Phase Three: The PowerPoint intervention.
CHRISTEN: sitting up straight Wait, what PowerPoint?
Y/N: groaning She made me a presentation. A full presentation with charts and graphs.
TOBIN: pulling out her phone I still have it! "Why Y/N Should Ask Christen Out: A Statistical Analysis."
CHRISTEN: incredulous Show me right now.
TOBIN: scrolling through slides Okay, here we go. Slide one: "Percentage of time Christen laughs at your jokes: 87% (league average for your humor: 23%)."
Y/N: The league average was completely made up.
TOBIN: Slide two: "Number of times Christen has touched your arm during conversations this week: 23 times."
CHRISTEN: blushing You counted?
TOBIN: I'm very thorough. Slide three: "Frequency of Christen fixing your hair/jersey after practice: 17 instances in 5 days."
Y/N: You were very... hands-on with my appearance.
CHRISTEN: You always looked like you'd been through a tornado! Someone had to fix you up.
TOBIN: Slide four was my personal favorite: "Number of times Christen has mentioned Y/N in casual conversation: 47 times in one week."
CHRISTEN: hiding face Oh my god, you kept track?
TOBIN: And my conclusion slide: "Probability that Christen Press likes you back: 97.3%"
Y/N: What was the 2.7% margin of error for?
TOBIN: Your own self-doubt and general disaster lesbian energy.
CHRISTEN: to Y/N Did the presentation work?
Y/N: It was very compelling, but I was still terrified.
TOBIN: Which brings us to Phase Four: The Nuclear Option.
CHRISTEN: nervously What's the nuclear option?
Y/N: She locked us in the equipment room.
CHRISTEN: whipping around to stare at Tobin You what?!
TOBIN: After the Portland Thorns game! You guys had played amazingly, we won 3-1, and you were both so happy but still dancing around each other. I was fed up.
Y/N: We were heading to get our stuff after the team celebration, and suddenly the door slammed shut behind us.
TOBIN: And I may have barricaded it with a chair.
CHRISTEN: Tobin Heath!
TOBIN: defensively You two needed a push! I yelled through the door, "You're not coming out until you figure your shit out!"
Y/N: We could hear you setting up camp outside with snacks.
TOBIN: I came prepared! I had a whole bag of trail mix and everything.
CHRISTEN: to Y/N What did we do?
Y/N: At first we just laughed about the situation. Like, "This is so Tobin." But then we actually started talking.
CHRISTEN: Really talking. About how much our friendship meant to us, about being scared to ruin it...
Y/N: And then you said something that changed everything.
CHRISTEN: smiling softly I said we were really bad at this game for two professional athletes.
Y/N: And I asked what game, and you said...
CHRISTEN: The one where I'd been trying to get you to ask me out for three months.
TOBIN: dramatically clutching chest And then?
Y/N: I literally said, "Wait, what?" Like the smooth operator I am.
CHRISTEN: laughing Your face was priceless. Pure shock.
Y/N: I couldn't believe it. I asked if you were serious, and you said...
CHRISTEN: I said I'd been dropping hints for months and you were the most oblivious person on the planet.
Y/N: So I said, "What hints?" And you started listing them.
CHRISTEN: The extra coffee runs, always choosing you as my partner, texting you good morning every day, staying late after practice to talk...
Y/N: The hair fixing, sitting next to me on every bus ride, sharing your snacks...
TOBIN: from outside the door And then you kissed!
CHRISTEN & Y/N: in unison Tobin!
TOBIN: I was invested! I needed to know my plan worked!
Y/N: She was definitely listening at the door.
CHRISTEN: When we finally kissed, we could hear her cheering and taking photos through the crack under the door.
TOBIN: proudly I documented the moment for posterity! Plus I needed proof for the team group chat.
Y/N: You put it in the group chat?!
TOBIN: Just the cheering part! The photos were for my personal collection.
CHRISTEN: shaking her head You're unbelievable.
TOBIN: But effective! Look at you two now!
Y/N: looking at Christen It worked out pretty well.
CHRISTEN: squeezing Y/N's hand Pretty perfectly, actually.
TOBIN: And now for the real question our viewers want to know - what's it like dating your teammate?
CHRISTEN: It's amazing. We understand each other's schedules, the pressure, the physical demands...
Y/N: And she makes everything more fun. Even the worst training days are better when I get to do them with her.
CHRISTEN: Our chemistry on the field has gotten even better too.
Y/N: We can read each other's minds during games now.
TOBIN: waggling eyebrows I bet you can.
CHRISTEN: Tobin!
Y/N: laughing What about the challenges? Living together, working together, traveling together for national team...
CHRISTEN: Honestly? There aren't many challenges. We balance each other out well.
Y/N: She's the calm to my chaos, I'm the energy when she needs motivation.
CHRISTEN: And we have our own interests too. Y/N has her photography, I have my cooking obsession...
Y/N: She makes the most incredible pasta.
CHRISTEN: blushing It's just carbonara.
Y/N: It's not just carbonara, it's art.
TOBIN: making gagging motions You two are disgustingly cute.
CHRISTEN: Says the person who orchestrated this whole thing.
TOBIN: I'm proud of my work! Speaking of which, Y/N, tell them about your six-month anniversary gift.
Y/N: groaning She made us a photo album.
TOBIN: Not just any photo album. "The Heath Files: A Love Story" - a complete documentation of your relationship from my perspective.
CHRISTEN: laughing It's actually really sweet. She had pictures from our first Angel City practice together, screenshots of our social media interactions...
Y/N: Photos of us from the equipment room incident.
TOBIN: That's history right there!
CHRISTEN: And a timeline of all your "interventions."
TOBIN: With success rates! Very scientific.
Y/N: There's also a section called "Future Predictions" that's just question marks and wedding dress photos.
TOBIN: innocently Just planning ahead.
CHRISTEN: blushing Tobin!
Y/N: Speaking of the future... looking at Christen We've actually been talking about next steps.
TOBIN: sitting up straight Are we talking about what I think we're talking about?
CHRISTEN: Maybe after the World Cup...
Y/N: We'll see what happens.
TOBIN: jumping up I KNEW IT! I called this! I'm going to be the best maid of honor!
CHRISTEN: Who said you're going to be maid of honor?
TOBIN: pointing at herself The person who got you together! I have dibs!
Y/N: laughing We'll definitely consider it.
TOBIN: Consider it? I'm writing my speech already!
CHRISTEN: to Y/N We're never going to hear the end of this.
Y/N: Never. But honestly? looking at both of them I'm grateful. For Tobin's meddling, for that equipment room, for all of it.
CHRISTEN: softly Me too. Sometimes you need someone to push you toward your happiness.
TOBIN: wiping actual tears Okay, now I'm emotional. This is what happens when my plans work too well.
Y/N: Just don't lock anyone else in equipment rooms, okay?
TOBIN: winking at camera No promises! If you know two people who are perfect for each other but too scared to make a move...
CHRISTEN: Please don't give her ideas.
TOBIN: I'm a full-service wingwoman! Available for consultations!
Y/N: to camera Don't encourage her.
TOBIN: That's all for today's episode! Don't forget to like, subscribe, and remember - sometimes love needs a little help from your friends!
CHRISTEN: And maybe don't actually lock people in rooms.
TOBIN: grinning But if you do, make sure you bring snacks!
Y/N: laughing Thank you for watching our chaos, everyone.
CHRISTEN: And thank you, Tobin, for being the most wonderfully meddlesome friend we could ask for.
TOBIN: taking a bow It's what I do best!
The camera fades out on the three of them laughing together, Y/N and Christen's hands intertwined, while Tobin makes exaggerated heart shapes with her hands behind them.
TOBIN: voice-over as credits roll Next week on The Recap Show: "When Your Teammate Tries to Steal Your Girlfriend" - featuring a very jealous Alex Morgan!
