Hi, The Creature Codex here. Gigi.
I've been running this blog for over ten years now. Over that time, I've made 1999 monsters for Pathfinder RPG, all available for free on tumblr. Monster 2000 posts very soon. I'm not planning on quitting anytime soon; I've got some new ideas that'll really make 'em scream.
I am also a trans woman. Who was forced to quit her last job over being bullied by students in the classroom and the administration's insufficient response. I have gotten all of one job interview in the whole time I've been looking for work, and I didn't get that job. Although I have launched a Patreon, and I'm very proud of how active it is... it's only a fraction of my rent. And my savings are dwindling as costs are rising.
If you like the monsters I've written. If you've reblogged my posts. If you've stumbled on this site through a Google search because apparently I'm considered an expert on obscure monsters now. Please, I could use the help. My paypal is here and my Patreon is here.
Thank you.
Happy Pride Month.

SERIOUS: NEW BOT SCAM ALERT
heya!
this right here?
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NOT REAL.
the "@staff" is just the bio text.
tumblr staff will not contact you through anything other than email or their official accounts, which will all have this badge:
DO NOT ENGAGE WITH THIS OR SIMILAR ACCOUNTS AND ABSOLUTELY DO NOT CLICK ANY LINKS FROM IT.
report and block. i'd also appreciate it if you shared this post, bc that blog was JUST created and was already tagging a LOT of people, and i know not everyone has the scam-sensing instinct, even if this might seem obvious to some.

Dakon
"Gorilla Warrior Groom" © Gio Sabadze, accessed at his ArtStation here
[The dakon is yet another monster that appeared in the AD&D Fiend Folio and was then all but forgotten. Maybe it's market saturation; there are so many apes and ape humanoids in D&D that one without a gimmick or any special abilities just doesn't stand out. They did make an appearance in Dragon Magazine 187, getting an "Ecology of the Dakon" article intended to rescue them from the memory hole. It didn't work. But it does have some interesting ideas to emphasize their Lawful Neutral alignment, which I poached here. I did not take the use of titles from the historical Ghana Empire from that article; that strikes me as being too close to unfortunate racial implications. My version incorporates them into Pathfinder by referring to some of that setting's ape monsters, and gives them a howl special attack because apes are loud.
If you'd like to support my writing, check out the Creature Codex Patreon here!]
Dakon CR 2 LN Monstrous Humanoid This creature looks like a gorilla, except that it is clearly comfortable walking on two legs. It wears little clothing except for harnesses for tools and golden jewelry.
Dakons are gorilla-like humanoids with a highly organized society. They are agriculturalists and traders who value gold above other precious stones and metals. All free dakons wear some manner of gold jewelry, typically a ring displaying the name and crest of their monarch. Royal dakons go so far as to wear ceremonial golden armor on special occasions. Dakon villages are built in three dimensions out of wood and fiber, surrounded by wooden palisades for defense; dakons rarely build with stone. A village is led by the strongest warrior, and competitions of strength and intimidation occur every five years to determine who that is. All of the villages in a region pay tribute to a king or queen, who owns the gold mines in the area and taxes all trade. The miners laboring to extract the gold are never free dakons, instead being made up of convicted criminals and the enslaved warriors of their enemies.
Rank-and-file dakons rarely use melee weapons (trusting instead to their powerful fists), although they do carry a brace of javelins when expecting combat. Swords are seen as symbols of rank, and warlords and kings often wield ornate weapons. Every dakon is capable of communicating with other primates and befriending them, and as such monkeys and apes are common domestic animals. Dire apes are frequently used as watchdogs and war hounds. A dakon’s lungs are powerful and they can and do give shouts that can be heard for miles as a warning; creatures too close to a shouting dakon can be temporarily deafened.
Dakons are a proud people and wish to be seen as equals by the humanoids that live nearby them. They staunchly believe in law and order, seeing it as a powerful corrective to the chaotic nature of the demon lord Angazhan, who is seen as the primary architect of evil in their cosmology. The charau-ka are their greatest rivals, and captured charau-ka make up the bulk of their slave force. Dakons do not believe in the death penalty among their own kind; criminals are subject to enslavement or exile, and they are ritually shaved in patches as a sign of humiliation. For the most serious offenses, the shaved patches are burnt or chemically scarred to ensure that the hair never grows back. Dakon religion venerates a wide range of ancestors, nature and elemental spirits; druids and oracles are much more common divine casters than clerics.
Can I just say, it is Refreshing to see a race of Simian-folk that aren't the tired old Trope of " """Primitive""" Evil Ape-men" And instead are a structured society, with a distinct Early Agricultural Age-esque Kingdoms. (A style of kingdom That's rarely seen in Fantasy).

Cliessid
Image by “JML:, © Frog God Games.
[Swords and Wizardry seems to share a lot of assumptions about player motivations as old-school, 1970s-era D&D; namely, that the players are amoral jerks concerned primarily with profit. For example, the sample plot hook built around these cute little guys involves them being enslaved to work in a sewer, and striking back with the help of a psychic crabman to get fair wages or else. The plot hook indicates that the PCs are expected to be on the city’s side, but I don’t think I’ve ever run a game for a group that wouldn’t be more interested in supporting the Glorious Crustacean Revolution.
Incidentally, unless I am forgetting something (and with more than 1100 monsters, odds are that I am), this is the first time that I’ve written a monster with sequential hermaphroditism! Which is bizarre, because that’s one of my favorite reproductive adaptations.]
Cliessid CR 1/3 LN Monstrous Humanoid This small, shelled biped has lobster-like claws for hands, two short legs that end in three toes splayed in a Y-like shape, and two clusters of tentacles, one around the mouthparts and one growing from the top of its head like hair.
Cliessids are small crustacean-like creatures that are native to aquifers, underground rivers and flooded cave systems. Cliessids are omnivorous, feeding on small cave creatures, algae, fungi and detritus. They fight primarily to defend themselves and their territories, as cliessids are strongly clannish and territorial. This territoriality can bring them into conflict with other peoples, particularly if they colonize a sewer system—cliessids do not distinguish between natural and artificial passages, and usually blur the lines between the two.
Cliessids live short but productive lives. They are fully grown in a matter of months, and die of old age before their tenth birthday. They are broadcast spawners and sequential hermaphrodites—all cliessids are born male and become female if they survive long enough and are well fed. Once their population grows too large in a given area, a few cliessids will leave to colonize a new home range. Such divergent populations are usually strangers of their home population within a few years, and cultural contact between colonies is rare. They are industrious and often modify their caves to suit their needs by carving out niches and boltholes with their claws. Some urbanized humanoids have attempted to enslave cliessids to work as sewer maintenance, but the little crab-men do not take kindly to threats of force. Urbanized cliessids may turn the tables and end up exacting wages for their efforts, turning to guerrilla warfare or intentionally blocking pipes to get what they want.
A cliessid stands about three feet tall and weighs fifty pounds. They advance by character class, with rogue and fighter being popular choices. They are more likely to manifest mental gifts than other forms of magic, and psychics and other occult classes are relatively common among them.

Ibathene
Image © Emperors Choice Games, by Mark Allen.
[Commissioned by @crazytrain48. The ibathene appeared in the very first Arduin Grimoire as a monster scarier than dragons–it was the tarrasque before the tarrasque was.]
Ibathene CR 20 N Magical Beast This immense green reptile looks something like a lizard, but with scythe-like claws and a single eye stalk rising from its head. A row of black spines runs along its back.
An ibathene is a massive predator that feeds on other such creatures. They live in swampy forests, where they feed mostly on hydras, dinosaurs and even true dragons. An ibathene has a small brain, but keen senses—it can detect vibrations through the ground, see great distances in the dark, and follow tracks for miles in pursuit of possible prey. Humanoids are usually small enough to escape its notice, but it will attack them if larger fare is unavailable.
In combat, an ibathene typically leads with its long tongue. Unlike that of a chameleon, it is not sticky. Instead, it wraps around prey, constricting it as it drags its victims closer to its waiting maw. Ibathenes are notoriously gluttonous, often gobbling up multiple foes at once and continuing to eat until they are swollen near to bursting. An ibathene continues to fight until it is slain, and in fact grow stronger in their desperation after suffering wounds that would kill most creatures. Almost all ibathenes are too stubborn or stupid to flee.
An average ibathene is 60 feet long—half of that length is tail. Its tongue is as long again as its body. It is said that in the most remote reaches of the world, specimens twice that size can be found.

I want you guys to all start making a bigger stink about Tumblr's Age Verification Horseshit.
Like they tried to change Reblogs and people rightfully got up in arms, this is a LOT worse. In order to have access to any sort of thing dubbed mature, and We haveALL seen what they think is mature, Everything from a black and white photo of a black woman's arm, to posts about IUD recalls, to a nude painted by a 17th century artist, to anything involving the word Trans; you have to send your personal information to a third party site that WILL get hacked, and you will be doxxed. And they can say "Oh shit, well it wasn't us who sent your name address and gender identity to Moldovan teenagers, here's a couple extra minutes in the ball pit.
That's bad enough!!!!!!!! But the entire idea of needing permission from state authorities to access anything labeled mature by our friendly AI overlords is some fucking Boll shit. Die Gedenken Sind Frie baby. This is all a reaction to people getting uppity about their lowly lowly rights and is being propped up by the same bad actors tht have made life unlivable. Fuck that shit.
"Well it's only being rolled out in Brazil and UK" Yeah, to start. "Well they're being forced to do this by laws." YOu know it's always really funny when these tech giants (Or whatever you call owning tumblr dot com) get really antsy about laws considering they pick and choose which ones they abide by.
This is a breaking point and it's going to be very interesting to see how we proceed from here.
If the company doesn’t exist in Brazil or uk right now the company doesn’t have to do shit. Take a note from Reddit: uk tried fining them and Reddit said: get fucked. And the uk government couldn’t do anything cuz they have zero rights to violate people in other countries without said country going to war over it. Tumblr staff simply want to make this a thing exist themselves. These websites don’t have to shut themselves down in specific countries. The government of that country will have to shut off the website themselves. Reddit hasn’t been kicked out of the uk btw. TUMBLR IS DOING THIS CUZ IT WANTS IT.
A lot of sites that aren’t popular don’t have this system in Brazil and uk btw. And they’re fine.
Article 1 | Article 2 | Addameer
Reading through these articles by Al Jazeera and the HRW had my heart stop cold. Not only do military trials of Palestinians have a 96% conviction rate and prisons full of horrible, torturous conditions, but now there's this. Just vile. Please give the articles a read if you've the time. There's more out there as well.
If you are interested in helping a family survive and escape Gaza, please consider contributing to my friend Hamza's fundraiser, or supporting him other ways. His family has several young children, and I worry about them deeply.
