musing on the idea of redemption in the heart killers because i really think it's less a matter of trying to achieve redemption and more an attempt to interrogate what it means and to whom it matters.

part of the reason bison and fadel choose to go to prison is about wiping the slate clean: trade away five years of your life and emerge forgiven and changed. and....it doesn't work. they get out of prison, immediately are put back into a position where they need to (or believe they need to) kill lilly, and do so. the justice system does not change them and it does not protect them.

as far as the ways the four of them hurt one another, i would argue that kant is the only one who actively desires redemption per se (as distinct from forgiveness or freedom), and only from bison. is kant lying to bison worse than the other interpersonal harms? is it worse than murder? or is the show simply saying something else?

#going on a tangent of sorts off liz's post. not disagreeing redemption is definitely a theme i just wanna talk about How it's a theme #for what it's worth. i think it's arguable but not well-determined whether kant lying to bison is worse than them tricking style and fadel #or the way fadel tries to protectconstrain bison #or anything fadel and bison do to style and kant etc etc etc #but the point is that it doesn't really matter.#there Is no objective Worse it's just a question of who wants redemption and who is willing to bestow it #plenty of this is up to interpretation of course!#and 'did they need to kill lilly' and 'did the justice system actually promise bison and fadel redemption or was it purely punitive'#and 'are bison and fadel forgiven by society's lights or are ex-cons going to have a hard time finding honest work'#and 'is five years an appropriate sentence for however many murders from anyone's perspective whether pro- or anticarceral'#all good questions for a different time #the post i never made about the lilly scene still bouncing around in my head like a sad little pinball....#the heart killers #may.txt

don’t be that guy who says fuck the police in the jury questionnaire! that just gets you sent home! if you want to generate change, interact with the case and use your jury vote for good! ESPECIALLY if it’s a high profile case!

Had jury duty, can confirm!

An innocent man is home with his family instead of spending his kids' whole childhoods in jail for "resisting arrest" when none of the cops could agree on why he was being arrested in the first place. (But it definitely had nothing to do with him being a Black man in a nice car, honest! 🙄)

And it still took like two hours of delibration after we'd heard all the evidence because one lady was so gung ho about believing everything the cops said, even when not a single goddamn one could agree with their own testimony, let alone their colleagues'.

Pointing out all the inconsistencies and admitted misconduct and letting people slowly come to their own conclusions as the trial played out was fucking hard, I won't lie. I can be patient, but it doesn't come naturally to me.

But. Yelling about how this was obviously a bs case would have shut everyone down and made them stop listening. Asking questions and letting people discuss how the cops tried to make xyz sound suspicious but it was totally normal, or about how if things played out the way the cops said then logically events should have proceeded in a totally different direction, and positing different theories that actually lined up with the evidence presented?

That got people thinking, and everyone realized that for a variety of reasons we all had reasonable doubts that the defendent had committed any of the crimes of which he was accused.

Being able to raise reasonable doubt among a jury of one's peers saves lives. If you get the chance, take it.
