@murderthegods every so often you’ll see a post make the rounds telling people to read more non-fiction, as opposed to watching tv shows or reading fanfiction. and imo people treat non-fiction on this website like it’s the intellectual version of self-help books. “Non-fiction” is kind of a nonsense category here because people mean it in a purely normative sense - they aren’t talking about hate tracts or pseudoscience or state propaganda or outright misinformation, or usually even things like memoirs, they’re talking about “good” and “smart” non-fiction (essays, journal articles, and books that roughly conform to their pre-existing beliefs, and they may or may not declare those beliefs in the post). The popular command for others to “read more non-fiction” is so non-specific as to be meaningless if taken at face value, but normatively, it is a command to “educate yourself” on the implied good topics contained within the normative category of non-fiction.

I don’t think it’s a helpful call to action, because I don’t think it’s really much of a call to action to begin with. People mostly just want to self-aggrandise about how smart they are and how easy it is for them to teach themselves by reading. It treats learning as this pick-up-and-go skill you can do by simply reading a book, and if you pick up a smart book, you will learn smart things. And even speaking as someone who is a lifelong “good student,” it took me over a decade of post-secondary education to learn how to teach myself while reading, and I think people operate on this assumption that reading information = learning information. I don’t think “read non-fiction” is a serious statement and has a bunch of deeply flawed assumptions about self-teaching, knowledge generation, and education that usually makes me roll my eyes whenever I see those types of posts

#yeah. i tend to interpret nonspecific calls to read more nonfiction #as leaning on an assumption that fiction is about entertainment and nonfiction is about learning #(and positing the latter as more intellectual or productive or worthwhile)#when none of those things is true #plenty of nonfiction is written primarily for entertainment (which is fine.)#but more importantly. all media whether fiction or not is going to rest to some degree on its unspoken assumptions #about what is right or normative or how the world should be #this is just a fundamental truth of trying to connect with one another across a void of understanding #but you have to think about the things you’re reading. there is no source of ultimate Truth that lets you avoid that. ever.#(well. it’s up to you! you can do whatever you want forever. but ‘read nonfiction’ is not a solution here.)#and the idea that fiction does *not* convey important things about the world is just as damaging

Opposite point though: he did pair up specifically with Khaotung which gives him the delightful opportunity to keep diverting from stereotypes. Like. Gets in a cp with Khaotung - starts with playing two roles that doesn't make at all clear that cps tend to have fixed top/bottom dynamics (source: me, I was confused to find that out after ofts and Eclipse because all I got was verse with those two). Starts mascing it up - immediately plays a top sub in his next role. Yeah, okay, there was cfc, but he still wanted to be leashed at some point and also his fanservice style has around that time shifted to go full Theerakit Kanaphan Lee simp, which doesn't have anything with the topic, but is still a delight. About TID, we will have to see. However, for the the let's beat each other up show, the one that is basically tops only, who went there? Not him. Khaotung is the only one among the gang member cast who is not assigned top in his cp but we know that he's great at being a feral raccoon, and I feel like First is sending him off from home like the "i will hold your flower, go fuck them up" meme and is very happy not to join the testosterone fest.

All in all. I do miss the First of back then, but I feel like in terms of cps, Khaotung is exactly the puzzle piece he needs.

See I don't exactly disagree with your reasoning, I think so far FKT haven't been too locked in bl top/bottom dynamics (and despite my dislike of most things c4c, I think it was part of them expanding the genres they play in). And I don't want them locked in a specific dynamic regardless of who would play masc, or even if neither had to! I like that they can give me different things and I want them to keep doing it.
