For this end-of-career investigation into the disappearance of a gentleman’s army mate, we are astonished to hear from Holmes himself for the first time. There is no denying that Holmes’ narration lacks Watson’s warmth and poetic touch, but his two stories are not as inferior as some critics seem to think. It is true that compared to his earlier recollections in "The Gloria Scott” and “The Musgrave Ritual”, they could do with some joie de vivre, but that is only in keeping with the tone of the other tales from The Case-Book, including those narrated by Watson. What is evident is that, at the time he is writing these, Holmes does miss his friend terribly and funnels his loneliness into sarcastic remarks, as he is wont to do.

So the first plant is a snake plant, not a tiger lily, but the directions are correct. Source: Me, who stuck half a snake plant leaf in a pot of dirt, forgot about it for a month, and now has a snake plant in a pot.

They're very hardy and forgiving plants. Not good for pets, though, so keep them out of reach or outside.

The snake plant is a yes, the orchid is definitely bullshit... seriously, the only reason phals are common AF these days is cloning. I've propagated phals, and it's a PITA that takes a year or more involving flower stalks and growth hormone. Very rarely you can coax one to put out a kieki at the base, but that's a craps shoot.

I've layered plants by scraping the bark and setting it in soil, but never without it still being attached to the parent plant until established.

And the water cutting root, I know everyone loves it, but nine times out of ten, you're better off just setting the stick/stem in damp soil. There is a difference between water roots and soil roots, so the plant has to waste energy converting them to soil once planted, may as well just skip that step. Only down side is you do have to be more on top of keeping the soil moist but not wet.
