maybe you are the super special detective who can "tell" when something's ai. sure, whatever.

but people i think need to make peace with the fact that sooner or later you are going to read and enjoy a fanfiction that was created with AI. it's not a moral failing to fall for a trick when someone is going out of their way to try and trick you. you are not a bad fan or bad person for not being able to tell.

the betrayal is not on you. the guilt should sit with the person who is trying to pass of ai as their own work, to get engagement, kudos, comments, build community and friends with weird cheat codes with the bonus that those cheat codes hurt the very communities they're trying to get into or use.

just like the social contact of clicking "i am old enough to view this" (no real way to check that isn't wildly oppressive), the assumption that works are made by humans is something we can't truly keep out without using broken and terrible tools.

Yesterday I came across a Percy Jackson edit of Percy and Annabeth, but something seemed off.

For some reason I couldn’t find this exact scene, but THIS is what they actually look like

This creator made the “effort” of editing (using AI) to make these edits, all in the name of “Book accuracy”.

It is true, in the books Annabeth is a white blonde girl, and Luke is a white blonde guy, but wanting book accuracy is not an excuse to edit REAL PEOPLE to be white. The characters may not be real, but the actors very much so are, and these edits erase everything that makes them who they are.

The comments on these edits say things like “This is what Disney took from us!” “White people don’t get representation anymore.” “If the show looked like this I’d actually watch it” and any comment countering gets a million responses agreeing with the OP.

Fun fact: You don’t need to watch the show! No one is making you watch it, and it’s okay to prefer the books! There’s nothing wrong with that, the issue is that you’re erasing actual POC and using AI to make this slop instead of editing different actors or using fanart to make an edit like literally everyone else does.

After being casted, Leah (Annabeth) received death threats. A child received death threats because people didn’t agree with her casting, this is 100% serious.

Regardless of how you feel about the show or its casting, editing poc to be white is despicable and it’s awful to see how many people don’t see an issue with this

taniel couldn't live without small, lingering touches

Eleven’s story meant SO much to abuse survivors like myself. She got me through times I literally didn’t think I would survive and I know I’m not the only one. She didn’t just stand for “childhood” for us - she stood for CHILDHOOD ABUSE. And, most intensely, she stood for HOPE. That maybe you haven’t known love or family before, but you are still worthy of it. The abuse does not define you. You can move past it. And the narrative reinforced that: mileven’s entire storyline. the party. hopper adopting el in season 2. in season 3 Mike saying to el “I know you think you have to do this but you don’t” and “everyone’s treating her like a machine but she’s not a machine.” Hop saying “I need you safe. this thing’s not coming after me.” THE ENTIRETY OF SEASON 4???? Or how about Hopper’s speech in the finale??? YOUVE BEEN ABUSED AND YOU NEVER LET IT BREAK YOU. FIGHT FOR A LIFE OUTSIDE OF HAWKINS. All the teasing of the happy ending with the three waterfalls?? The obvious hope in el’s eyes talking about it with Mike???
